Team Talk August 27, 2018 A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW
By Hannah Brown
The “Different Point of View” photography project has become a much anticipated annual
tradition led by Mary Coniglio and local photographer Larry Tetamore. Currently in its 4th year,
the grant-funded project allows the artists to document how they see the world, from their
perspective. The photographers meet with Larry to lean about their cameras and to get some
formal instruction on the art of photography. Then, they head out to explore our local community,
capturing anything and everything that interests them. Larry goes through all of the photos that
were taken and makes small edits, like changing some to black and white. Then he and Mary work
to select the best 5 from each of the artists. Those photos are then printed and framed and hung for
the exhibit. When asked what the best part of facilitating the project is, Mary stated that it’s
“watching the artists beam with pride at the exhibit, and hearing all of the compliments from the
guests.” The artists get so much validation that what they’ve created is truly spectacular. You can
view the artwork from this year’s class and enjoy light refreshments at the New Deal Gallery at the
Livingston Arts Center on Thursday, September 13th, from 5-7PM. The exhibit is set to remain up
throughout the month of September.

GETTING TO KNOW….WALTER SMITH
BY HANNAH BROWN
BRENDA MACNABB AND SHIRLEY GARLING
Walter works as a Habilitation
Specialist and he has been with the
agency for 2.5 months. He lives in
Avon and was born in Batavia. When
asked who his personal hero is, he
answered his mother.
His favorite sports teams are the
Boston Red Sox, New England
Patriots, Buffalo Sabres, and
Rochester Knighthawks. His favorite
foods are tacos and meatloaf. His
favorite TV shows are Blue Bloods
and Supernatural. His favorite
movies are Field of Dreams and
Pinocchio. He loves watching and
playing sports, walking, and camping.
If he could bring a fictional character
to life it would be Pinocchio because
he used to watch the movie all the
time with his grandma and he is his
favorite character.
Something that we might not know
about Walter is that he had
open-heart surgery when he was one
year old!
If he could have dinner with anyone
he would pick his grandpa Kalicki.
He loves Thanksgiving because you
have family, football, and food.
Of all the places in the world,
England is his first choice.
The best concerts he’s been to are
Lecrae and Andy Mineo.
His perfect day was his wedding day,
on July 23, 2016. His family members
are what brings him the greatest joy!
When asked what the best part about
working at The Arc is he said, “the
people!”
He has selected Kristin O’Dell for our
next column. Stay tuned!

The residential program has two retirements to celebrate this summer! Shirley
Garling is retiring after 14 years at the Deiter IRA. She is treasured by the people
living in the IRA and by co-workers alike, and she will be greatly missed! Miranda
Snyder wrote a special note to her, pictured on the left.
Brenda Macnabb has been at the Turtle Rock IRA for the last 5 years, and has left
quite an impression. Her coworkers have this to say about her:
“Brenda is the first one our folks approach with any problem, big or small. Her
daily kindness and attention will be
grievously missed...and let’s not
forget that she (and Holly) saved
everyone when the kitchen ceiling
collapsed!”
“You are truly a great mentor,
difficult to part with and impossible
to forget.”
BEST WISHES SHIRLEY AND
BRENDA! Shirley Garling Brenda Macnabb

TOUR DE PERRY
FRIENDS FORE LIFE GOLF TOURNAMENT
The 24th annual Friends Fore Life Golf Tournament was held on
Friday, June 29th. The weather was beautiful, the scores were
low, the food was great, and we exceeded our fund-raising goal of
$30,000. The event doesn’t happen without the amazing group of
volunteers pictured below (and some others who weren’t there for
the photo). The winning men’s team, with a score of 55, was Glyn
Hartigan, Derek Hicks, Mike Strauss, and Andy Gilkes. The
winning women’s team, with a score of 74, was Nancy Platt, Sally
Barie, Lesley Carney, and Donna Thompson. Leading the mixed
teams, with a score of 60, was Marc Strain, Stacy Wilson, Carol
Sweeting, and Les Rose.
The Tour de Perry, in its second year under our direction, was held on
Saturday, July 14th. It was a much nicer day than last year, with lots of
sun replacing the monsoon-like rain. We had over 240 riders make the
trek to Perry from all over Western New York, from as close as Geneseo
and as far away as Syracuse and Glenns Falls. The promise of
spectacular views through Letchworth State Park along with a new,
mid-length route option drew new and returning cyclists. Lisa Irwin and
Wally Gee were there to hand out ice cold water to cyclists at the finish
line, and also to make sure that they know what we are all about at The
Arc! The Tour has grown to be our largest event in Wyoming County,
and we are thankful so many riders want to be a part of it!
