There’s something really positive when communities uniteand move towards a common goal. A sense of belongingdevelops into a purpose and then into a goal and beforeyou know it you’ve got shared aims, a belief in the BluePeter Christmas appeal and even the sincerity of NoelEdmonds seems plausible. So today as you look across the stand at that annoyinggit selling programmes or raffle tickets please try not topretend your taking an urgent phone call about grannyfalling out of the paraglider or that the cat has let thehandbrake off the neighbours Mercedes. Open up thatwallet, free the catch on your best Armani purse and chucka tenner in the bowl. You’ll feel better for it! Honest! Community is genuinely a really precious thing and themore you value its existence the more it pays its dividend.I can still remember the names of most of the people in thestreet I grew up in but not so much where I live now.Cheshunt Football Club though has been really trying tochange that. Its motto of One Club One Community is nota falsehood. If you are fortunate to be around the people who work atthe club or rather donate hours of their own time withoutpayment, then you really see how an organisation caninvest into a community. There are kids training every night, families gathering toenjoy time together and meet likeminded souls and seetheir children have lots of fun and make friends in thesafety of a community football club. The club has demonstrated its commitment to localcauses. Two seasons ago after the tragic death of a younglocal boy in a drowning incident the club launched a verysuccessful community day to raise money and awarenessin respect of the need to improve awareness about therisks of swimming in deep water. There have been otherareas to where the club has raised funds for local causesand indeed last season it was acknowledged how muchthe club contributes when sponsoring local events , suchas the Broxbourne Youth Awards.

We at Cheshunt hope that you all enjoy thecommunity day and the festival of football that willtake place. We hope also that it ignites for you aninterest in football as it is in the grass roots level. We may not be considering freeing Gareth Balefrom the horrendous shackles of his £600k aweek contract, and we might not be too worriedabout Arsenal’s ridiculously low transfer budget ofonly £45million but we are interested in the localkids and their prospects of getting good coachingand an opportunity to develop in a sport that theywill end up with a lifetime of memories from. This season the Cheshunt first team begin anadventure into a higher league. We fans will bevisiting places like Margate and Folkestone andenjoying perhaps overnight stays by the coast. Itmay not be Barcelona or Milan but we will bethere representing our local community, we willregard it as important that we leave these townswith people thinking that’s a good club, and theyare good people. On a Community Day perhaps its good to reflectthat football clubs at local level offer the chanceto showcase how we are doing in terms of otherclubs, and other communities and perhaps showour community in a positive light.

Enjoy Your Day.

A particular focus of mine over the last fewyears has been establishing the club at theheart of the community. I believe a footballclub plays an important role in the health andsocial cohesion of the community it serves, and is a great platform to raise awareness oflocal causes. Our annual Community Cup tournament hasbeen a huge success in promoting andfunding projects and charities in ourcommunity. This year our tournament is in memory offormer player John Walton, who sadly passedaway in April after being diagnosed withpancreatic cancer last year. Today we will beraising money for our local Isabel HospiceLiving Well service that runs from St.Joseph's Parish Centre in Waltham Cross. The Living Well service in Waltham Crossoffers of variety of options to support those inour community who are living with seriouslong term and life limiting conditions fromcancer. The money raised today day will gotowards buying equipment for use in thevariety of sessions and courses that are runfrom the centre. We will be joined today byvolunteers from the Isabel Hospice who willbe happy to provide more information aboutthe service. It's a fitting cause in memory ofJohn, so please give generously to thedonation buckets and enter our 50/50 draw.

Of course the tournament also providesa feast of football and we welcome toTheobalds Lane our good friends andtenants FC Romania along withSouthern League side Royston Town. Itwill be another good test for Craig andthe squad ahead of the new season.I would also like to thank today’ssponsors Technical Surfaces, who areagain supporting the tournament.Technical Surfaces have beenmaintaining our 3G pitch for many yearsnow, the results of which are clear tosee. All at Cheshunt Football Club were saddened to hear thatformer striker John Walton had passed away onWednesday 10th April, after being diagnosed withwith pancreatic cancer last year.A local lad from Goffs Oak, John played for CheshuntYouth alongside Colin Hyde. The pair were spotted byChelsea's Scouts and spent a few months at StamfordBridge before returning to Theobalds Lane where newManager John Drabwell thrust them both into the firstteam just before Christmas in the 1972/73 season in aPremier midweek floodlit league game at WalthamstowAvenue where John scored Cheshunts only goal in a 2-1defeat. Alongside Rowland Cray, George Berryman and JohnCerasoli, all in their late teens/early twenties, they formedthe core of Drabwells young new side that he imposed hisideas upon and would go onto give the Club its biggesthaul of trophies since the 1940's. Victories in the London Charity Cup (1974), Athenianleague Cup and East Anglian Cup (1975) were crownedby an Athenian league Championship and league cupdouble in 1976 with John Waltons powerful performancesup front being a key element of that sides success. Theclubs top goalscorer in 1975, John was mature beyond hisyears and the target of several other non-league sides buttold Drabwell he had little interest in leaving Cheshuntsaying 'bar Spurs or Arsenal want to sign me, don't bothertelling me about offers from other clubs as I'd rather stayhere'.In August 1977 he scored his final goal for Cheshunt in a2-2 draw at home to Tring

. Just before half time he took a bad knock and shouldhave been substituted. However he reappeared in thesecond half but soon went down again. He hadruptured his cruciate ligament - a career ending injury.Remarkably he battled back to make a couple ofappearances before the end of that campaign but wasby his own admission was not the same player as hispace was no longer there. He remained at Cheshunt, spending the majority of histime in the reserves, before leaving at the end of the1979-80 season to join Hoddesdon. During 1982-83he returned for a handful of games, making his finalappearance at Maidenhead in January 1983.All who remember him as a player agree that his 44goals in 146 appearances for the Ambers would havebeen at least doubled were it not for the knee injury hereceived aged only 23. Had he been playing today, with modern surgerymethods, he may well have returned to full fitness yetJohn accepted his injury, showed no bitternesstowards football, remaining upbeat and staying friendswith team mates John Poole, Stuart Parker andparticularly Jeff Burling for the rest of his life. John Walton was a hugely popular figure with all hisfellow players, spectators and club officials and was afamiliar face at the many reunions that have takenplace at Theobalds Lane in recent years. He will bedeeply missed by all those who were lucky enough tohave known him

In The Dugout with

Craig Edwards

Firstly I’d like to welcome our guests fromRoyston Town and FC Romania and hopethat their preparations for the coming seasonare going well. After the heroics of last season in particular abarnstorming last twelve games its quicklyback to business and the hope of anothersuccessful season. So far we’ve had six friendlies winningagainst a very good Coggeshall side who willgo well again this season, losing four anddrawing one. The games have primarilyfeatured trialists and whilst there has beensome very talented individuals on show asyou’d expect little in the way of organisationor pattern of play. I did enjoy some of theperformances against Stevenage & theirTrialist brothers, it gave us a very good workout and opportunity for players to force theirway into my thinking, as will todays matches. From the trials we have signed six playerswhich is a great return. I expect a number ofthem to feature heavily during the season. Now however it is time to bed the team in forthe challenge of life in a higher division. Nodoubt the two sides we face today will giveus stern tests. Ultimately though being righton August 10th is all that matters and this iswhat we are concentrating on.

We have a tough first month, openingwith an away fixture at East Thurrock whoonly three months ago were two divisionshigher. Support has increased week by week lastseason with many of the die hards turningup for our pre-season games and asizeable contingent starting to growbehind the goals which we very muchappreciate. Enjoy the games

Looking Back,The first in a series of articles by former

programme editor and Ambers geek. Jim Tuite

Roger CarterFew figures in the history of CheshuntFootball Club can match the longevity, dedication and sheer enthusiasm of formerprogramme editor and Secretary RogerCarter. Living in Stamford Hill, Roger would comeup to Cheshunt games with his father as aboyin the early 1950's - no mean feat asTheobalds Grove station was closed topassengers at the time (it wouldnt re openuntil the early 1960s) which meant a longwalk from Cheshunt stationto either the oldBrookfield Lane ground (now the formerCheshunt School site) or later the Cheshuntstadiumon Theobalds Lane. His scrap booksrecord these early visits, with notes andscores pencilled inas they would be for yearsto come.

By the late 1960's Roger had made thestep from keen fan and helper toProgramme editor, following in thetradition of previous editors by using apen name rather than his own. 'Cestrean'would sign off the programme notes witheach editorial showing his obviousknowledge and love of the club.Players from that time all remember 'TheCount' as he was known in the changingroom- a title given for his flamboyantdress sense ! Defender Mel Bevanswould delight in seeing Roger in longcoats, flared suits and kipper ties, andclaims the credit for the popularnickname. Roger was a master of using the word'amber' in his articles and was not best

pleased when in 1973 the club adopted theyouth teams 'yellow' and 'blue' colours anddropped the Amber & Black they had wornsince their first match in 1946. 'Amber Commentary' became 'Under theBlue Lamp' as Cheshunt entered a succesfuldecade under the management of JohnDrabwell and Chairmanship of Ted Prosser. By the early 1980's Roger had also taken onthe role of club secretary, but troubled timeslay ahead. The departure, return and finaldeparture of John Drabwell was coupled withthe sale of the club by Ted Prosser toproperty developers Abbey Homesteads. In the summer of 1986 after a few years ofunsuccessfully trying to sell the TheobaldsLAne ground first to Tottenham Hotspurs, then for residential housing, AbbeyHomesteads lost interest in the club andhalted the funding of the side. TheManagement & players walked outimmediately, soon to be followed by thecommittee, fearful they would be held liablefor mounting debts. Only Roger Carter &Fred Beer remained, and between them theymanaged to cobble together a managementand team made up mainly of youth teamplayers and local faces, all prepared to playfor nothing. It was a miracle the club wasable to kick off the 86/87 season Thedefeats mounted up, defeats in cups to farlesser sides were humiliating and it soonbecame clear the club would lose it's placein the league. However Roger & Fred battledon , recruiting the Wilsons & the Timpsonson to the committee

and most interestingly, making contactswith other clubs to resurrect the oldAthenian League, which had beenabsorbed into the Isthmian League someyears earlier. Some clubs were unhappywith the Isthmian set up. Cheshunt forexample were a big fish in the AthenianLeague used to success & silverware, Inthe Isthmian League they were an 'alsoran' So it fell to Roger Carter to spend thatdimal season dismissing the clubs poitionat the foot of the table as irrelevant as wewould move back to the Athenian Leaguein the following season. Around 16 clubshad declared interest , but one by onewithdrew and left only 12, the IsthmianLeague recorded their displeasure withthe 'rebels' ordering them to stay put or inCheshunt's case accept relegation to theSpartan League.A crucial end of season meeting was held, votes taken and new members chose toaccept the fate of relegation and abandonthe Athenian League. Alone in his wanting the Athenian Leagueand without Cheshunt the idea faded andsadly Roger resigned, ending arelationship of forty years. He passed away a few years laterunmentioned in club notes or local media.but fortunately his wonderful collection ofscrapbooks and records found their wayback to the club and form a major part ofthe clubs archive. Many of the names mentioned in thesearticles will appear in boardroom photos,Please ask if you wish to view them.

Royston Town FC

So when did it all begin? After some intensive research the evidence is that the club came into existence in 1875 making Roystonthe third oldest Club in Hertfordshire after Hitchin and Bishop’s Stortford. The Club’s very first honour came in 1911/12 when they won the Creake Charity Shield beating Wisbech1-0 in extra time. The Club’s first major honour in more recent times came in the guise of promotion to the Herts CountyPremier League in 1969/70 and they went on to be champions in 1972/73 and 1976/77. In 1978 werejoined the South Midlands League and won the Division One title at the first time of asking. Successcontinued with a final appearance in the Herts Charity Shield for the first time in 1979 and runners up spotin the South Midlands League Premier Division in 1980. The Herts Charity Shield was won in 1981/82 andtwo years later the Club joined the Isthmian League Division Two North where we remained for tenseasons before returning to the South Midlands League in 1994.After a period in the doldrums which culminated in relegation from the South Midlands League PremierDivision at the end of 2006/07, Paul Attfield was appointed manager with ex-Spurs favourite Tony Galvinreturning to Garden Walk as 1st Team Coach in November 2007.Paul immediately set about building a new 1st Team squad and a run of 17 games undefeated saw theClub move from bottom of the table to finish in 5th place in the League. The foundations had been laid for the 2008/09 season and the first team took the South Midlands DivisionOne League title with one of the best set of stats for any Step 6 Club in the country W33, D4, L3, GF138,GA30, GD+108, PTS 103.The 2011/2012 season will be seen as a watershed in our history with the winning of the South MidlandsPremier Division title and promotion to Step 4 in the shape of the Evo-Stik Southern League Division OneCentral. In our first season back at Step 4 after an absence of 19 years it was hard to know what to expect and howwe would perform. Most of our supporters felt a mid-table position would be an acceptable target for theseason, but we quickly found ourselves exceeding all expectations as our performances propelled ustowards the top of the table. Four straight wins in the first four games set the tone and a run of nine winswith just one defeat between October and December saw us maintain a play-off position. In the very lastgame of the season a play-off was still a possibility and having gone 2-1 up away at AFC Hayes with just afew minutes of the game left it looked a near certainty. But it was not to be as Hayes scored an 87 minuteequaliser and our play-off place was lost.In our second season at this level our steady progress to claim a place in the play off zone was given asevere jolt when, at the beginning of November, Paul Attfield announced his resignation as first teammanager due to ill health. The search for his replacement began almost immediately and we wereinundated with applications from some very well know and successful managers. After an exhaustiveselection process the Board appointed Steve Castle at the end of November and on Boxing Day Steveofficially took over securing a 0 – 0 draw against the League’s form team and eventual championsDunstable Town.

Royston Town FC

Promotion to the Southern Premier League means that the Club was playing at the highest level inits 142 year history! The Club’s first of objective as it planned for life at Step 3 was as simple as ‘Let’s make sure we can stay inthis League!’ and Steve Castle and Chris Watters immediately set about recruiting players to strengthen thesquad. These included James Potton, Sam Corcoran, Scott Thomas and Lee Chappell, all who hadexperience of playing at Step 3 and higher. The signing of Adam Marriott a proven goal scorer who hadplayed for Lincoln City, Stevenage and Cambridge United was without a doubt a real coup and he was toplay a key role in the progress made by the Club by becoming our leading marksman with 31 goals. There was further good news for the Club just before the season started when we heard that former Roystongoalkeeper Will Norris who had gone to Cambridge United had been sold to Wolves with our ‘sell on’ clausewith United still in place. Will played as number two to John Ruddy for most of the season and was the onlygoalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in normal time against a full strength Manchester City team in the LeagueCup.When the season kicked off with our home game against Stratford Town we immediately realised how toughplaying at this level was going to be as they used all their experience to chisel out a 2-1 win against us. Asthe season progressed results proved inconsistent with good wins against the likes of Kings Lynn andFarnborough interspersed with defeats to Hereford,Merthyr Town, Hitchin and St Neots. An undefeated runduring October and another during December and into the New Year not only saw us consolidate our Leagueposition but put us in striking distance of the play off spots. Our chances for securing that spot were severelydented after an ill-disciplined performance saw us loose to Weymouth 3 – 0 followed immediately by a 1 – 0away defeat to lowly placed Kings Langley. Although we managed to maintain our hopes of a play off placethese were finally put to bed with two successive defeats against the eventually play-off winners SloughTown and we had to be satisfied with a seventh place finish. Our results in cup competitions were mixed. In the FA Cup we played Braintree Town away and wereunlucky not to win the game outright after a brilliant performance saw us draw 2 – 2 and then loose thereplay 2- l. A good run in the FA Trophy with wins against Enfield Town and Leatherhead came to an endagainst Eastbourne when having managed to draw at their place we lost the replay on penalties. Wemanaged to get to the final of the Herts Senior Cup were we played Boreham Wood from Step 2 and in spiteof a brave performance we never really had the power to compete and lost 2 – 1Given were we had started from, we definitely exceeded our own and many other peoples’ expectations andthis has provided us with the building blocks to face this season in the newly constituted Southern PremierCentral League.A comprehensive history of the Club can be found in The History of Royston Town FC 1875 – 2012 firstpublished in 2013. The book was written by the Club’s President, Alan Barlow after over five years ofpainstaking research and can be purchase via the Club or by visiting www.alanvbarlow.com.
