Dear Prospective Community Partner, Thank you for your interest in Attack Poverty’s Community Development Leadership Program for the summer of 2015! Attack Poverty is a global organization that serves locally, adopting pockets of poverty and launching what we call Friends Initiatives™. These initiatives are LONG-TERM commitments that use an ASSET-BASED approach to build on the strengths and capacities of the community. The driving force behind all this is EMPOWERMENT. We are all about giving people tools to help themselves break out of the cycle of generational poverty. It’s about DEVELOPMENT, not charity; DIGNITY, not shame. Believing all humans are created in the image of God, we will always promote the dignity and worth of people and families.

Our initiatives touch over 5,000 families through safe water projects, in-school student support, after school programs, GED Prep, job readiness programs, financial literacy, and home repair. (For more information, visit our webpage at www.attackpoverty.org). We are excited that you are interested in becoming a part of the transformative change happening throughout our four initiatives located in North Richmond, North Rosenberg, Sundown Katy, and Rushere, Uganda! The summer internship with Attack Poverty through the Community Development Leadership Program is a 12 week program in which Community Partners have the opportunity to ENGAGE with a community, LEARN

Community Partner Position Internship Program Summer of 2015

Attack Poverty currently has five available positions to participate in the Community Development Leadership Program and become a Community Partner for the summer of 2015. The Community Partners will work alongside Attack Poverty staff in its “Friends of” initiatives to strengthen under-resourced communities through spiritual growth, education, revitalization and basic needs.

This is a great opportunity to ENGAGE with a community, LEARN valuable leadership skills, and GROW in your faith.

ENGAGE: As a Community Partner, you will daily interact and form relationships with members of the community through both planned activities and spontaneous conversations. We believe SHOWING UP and doing what you promise forms a relationship and fosters trust. By opening your heart and making space in your life for a community, you will leave changed and transformed through attacking poverty in your own life and seeing God’s presence at work in your life as well!

LEARN: Serving as a Community Partner is not your typical summer job. Through the Community Development Leadership Program, you will learn valuable LEADERSHIP SKILLS and gain over 400 hours of WORK EXPERIENCE through the HANDS ON LEARNING of ACTIVELY PARTICIPATING in Attack Poverty staff meetings, SHADOWING an Attack Poverty staff member, FUNDRAISING a set amount of money, and FACILITATING various group meetings. Additionally, Community Partners will learn academically through discussing the book When Helping Hurts and studying the 8 Components of Christian Community Development.

GROW: Most importantly, Community Partners will be act as “living sacrifices” (Romans 12:1), offering their time, energy and resources to walk alongside an under-resourced community – learning to be leaders through humility and sacrifice. One of the most difficult parts of being a Community Partner is working in a broken world and becoming mindful of your own brokenness. The tendency is to start believing the lie that because you are not perfect God cannot use you for his perfect plan. The resulting tension is where growth begins - addressing your own poverty but working towards shalom for both yourself and the world. You will discover your own sins, but through this brokenness God will use you to bring transformation to both yourself and those around you. This spiritual growth will be reinforced through a weekly Bible study and discussions with other Community Partners on the same journey.

The Community Partner position will begin approximately May 26 and end August 14 with an average workweek of 34 hours (working 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Thursday, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Fridays, and five hours of community involvement).

These positions are available to college and postgraduate adults between the ages of 18 and 28 years old who have a passion for empowering others to attack poverty within their life and community and have a reliable form of transportation.

The deadline is MARCH 15, 2015. Please fill out this application form online at the following link: http://www.attackpoverty.org/cdlp
