Jelly Rolls for Quilters Discover different ways to use those beautiful pre-cut 2 1/2” fabric strips (called jelly rolls) you find in quilt and fabric shops. We will create a lap- or baby-sized quilt while learning or polishing-up on quilting basics. Learn how to use these strips to make tote bags, placemats and more. All levels welcome, but you must have a sewing machine in good working order and know how to use it. 1. The CT State Diploma—General Educational Development (GED): This classroom-based course prepares students to pass the State of Connecticut administered General Educational Development (GED) Exam. Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading are covered in the curriculum. The course is designed to offer students age 16 or older an
alternative route to earn a CT State High School Diploma. Students must be 17 or older to take the GED exam. Individuals ages 17 or 18 must submit documentation that they have been withdrawn from school for at least six months prior to the exam, or that the class they entered ninth grade with has graduated. Preparation and testing is available in English or Spanish. La preparación y la prueba de GED está disponibles en inglés o español.
2. Adult High School Credit Diploma:This program offers students options for high school completion. In addition to granting credit for classroom courses and distance learning, students (16 and older) may be awarded credits for a variety of life experiences, such as military service and various vocational training. An EASTCONN High School Diploma is granted upon successful completion of the program.
3. National External Diploma Program (NEDP):
This program provides an alternative for adults who have gained skills through life experiences and demonstrated competence in a certain area. The NEDP is a portfolio assessment program that offers weekly one on one meetings with staff, but no classroom instruction. An EASTCONN high school diploma is granted upon successful completion of the program.

Education Refresher (ER)(CT Works East)A program for job seekers who need a quick refresher in basic skills—reading, writing or math, English language skills, or a high school diploma.
Algebra Foundations Workshop: Introduction to algebraic thinking and problem solving. Interactive, teacher led classes supplemented by 24-7 web-based tutorial support.

Get with the BEAT (Out-of-School Youth):
Get with the BEAT (Out-of-School Youth):This high school completion/employment program for eligible out-of-school youth between the ages of 16 and 21, is funded by the Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board. The program is designed to assist eligible out-of-school youth who want to move from high school drop-out to high school graduate, to advance from unemployed to gainfully employed, and to enter post-secondary programs. A case manager will work with participants to help them overcome barriers that prevent them from being successful in school and in the workplace.
EASTCONN Transitions to Post-Secondary Program:
This program will help EASTCONN adult education students navigate the post secondary maze and successfully enter college or training programs that will increase their earning potential. Students will also have the opportunity to prepare for college courses with computer skills and academic college readiness courses. English-as-a-Second Language (ESL): Instruction is designed for adults who have limited proficiency in the English language. Instructional emphasis is on listening and speaking, but reading and writing are also included. The classes are small to allow for active participation.
Citizenship Classes: This classroom-based program provides preparation and instruction to foreign-born adults who wish to become American citizens.
Adult Basic Education Classes:
Adult Basic Education classes are offered for students to work individually with the classroom teacher on basic math and lan-guage skills. Instructional levels range from beginning literacy to pre-GED readiness.
Family Literacy:EASTCONN partners with Head Start to provide a family literacy program. Wind-ham parents and families with ESL needs are targeted.
Workplace Education:
This is a partnership between EASTCONN Adult Education and local employers to create curricula that will improve the Eng-lish, reading, math, and/or language skills of their employees. Customized programs can be created for specific employers. Train the trainer program is also available. Call to find out how we can bring our programs to your place of employment.
Volunteer Tutoring Program:
Volunteer tutors work with adult learners on basic reading, writing, math or English-as-a-Second Language skills.

EASTCONN, QVCC & Math:
In an effort to help adult learners obtain the post-secondary education necessary to pursue higher-paying, in-demand careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), EASTCONN Adult Educa-tion works in collaboration with Quine-baug Valley Community College (QVCC). Thanks to that collaboration, EASTCONN offers several math classes aimed at prepar-ing its Adult Credit High School Diploma Program (CDP) students to “test out” of developmental math classes at QVCC. Stu-dents in EASTCONN’s GED and External Diploma programs may also audit these math classes, as may those member-town high school graduates who meet one or more of the following criteria:a) have never taken a high school Pre-Algebra or Algebra course; b) have earned a C or lower in a Pre-Algebra or Algebra I class; or, c) have failed Algebra II.
EASTCONN also offers a new College Experience course for both CDP and au-diting students.

Confirmation/Receipts: Confirmations of registration in a class, written or verbal, are not provided unless requested. Please provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope should you need a written confirmation or receipt. Unless you are otherwise notified, classes will run as scheduled.
Refund Policy: A full refund will be issued ONLY when EASTCONN Community Education cancels a course. If you decide not to take a class, a 90% refund will be
issued if we are notified 10 days prior to the first class. A 75% credit, good for one year from issue date, will be issued if we are notified before the second class meeting. No refunds apply to one-day classes or bus trips unless EASTCONN cancels the course or trip. Please allow one month from cancellation notification to receive your check.

Community Education Registration Information
Weather Cancellations: If EASTCONN and/or the school or site at which your class takes place is closed due to inclement weather, your class will not meet. Should bad weather develop during the day, class cancellations will be announced by late afternoon. Adult Education classes on pages 6 & 7 of this catalog will be cancelled on WVIT NBC30 TV, or listen to radio stations 98.3 FM, 97.5 FM, WINY 1350 AM, or WILI 1400 AM.
Weather-related cancellations for all other Community Education classes will be listed on the home page of the EASTCONN Web site at www.eastconn.org.

What is EASTCONN? Created in 1980 under Connecticut General Statute 10-66a, EASTCONN is a public, non-profit, regional educational service center. EASTCONN exists to provide high-quality, competitively priced educational and related services to 36 member Boards of Education and the 33 communities they serve in northeast-ern Connecticut.
