Community, Environment and Disaster RiskManagement Series links academic research to fieldpractice, strengthening the links between theenvironment, disaster and community. Urban Risk Reduction: An Asian PerspectiveCommunity, Environment and Disaster Risk Management, Volume 1

As cities all over the world have urbanized rapidlyafter the industrial revolution, most have confrontedenvironmental problems such as poor air and waterquality, high levels of traffic congestion and ambientnoise, poor-quality built environment, derelict land,greenhouse gas emissions, urban sprawl and,generation of waste and waste-water. In particular,cities in the developing world face problems relatedto the living conditions of the urban population. In thecontext of urban cities in the developing world, it can

be narrowed down to the quality of life of the livingpopulation in the cities. Needless to say, Asia has thelargest, as well as urban population at risk. This bookbrings the lessons from innovative urban riskmanagement approaches in Asian cities, drawing thelessons from seven Asian countries. The authors ofthe chapters consist of a wider spectrum ofstakeholders: from academicians to policy makers toNGO practitioners.

Climate Change Adaptation andDisaster Risk ReductionCommunity, Environment and Disaster Risk Management, Volume 2

Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster RiskReduction (DRR) are closely associated. After theBali Conference of 2007, there has been significantawareness at global and national levels to makecollective focus on CCA and DRR. There existssome literature on CCA; however, the linkages withDRR are not clear. The Nairobi Work Program(NWP), facilitated by the UNFCCC (UN Frameworkof Convention on Climate Change) and the Parties,have found specific scope for actions to enhance the

CCA and DRR agenda in developing countries. Asia,being particularly prone to natural disaster, hasimmense experience of coping with disaster risks.Therefore, analyses of Asian experiences will providegood entry points for CCA and DRR. The bookprovides a crucial analysis of issues of CCA andDRR and will exemplify them by specific casestudies. The book will be used for higher educationin the field of disaster and environment studies.
