A Message from the Chamber Board of Directors

The Board of directors for the Grants Pass & Jose-phine County Chamber of Commerce was given the dif-ficult task of finding a replacement CEO/President, after Colene Martin retired for the position at the end of May. Colene held the position for over six years, and it would be difficult to fill her shoes. Yet, after an extensive search and interview pro-cess that brought out many talented candidates locally and from several parts of the country, the Board of Direc-tors has hired a new CEO/ President ~ Josie Molloy.

Josie Molloy rose to the top of the list and was se-lected to fill the position of CEO/ President of our Cham-ber of Commerce because of her many years of Chamber experience, and a long impressive list of awards and ac-complishments. We believe she will be a wonderful leader for our Chamber as well as a local business advocate. Josie will be starting with us in August.

~Dave Kelly, PresidentChamber Board of Directors

Hi, my name is Josie Molloy. I am very excited to be the new President/CEO for the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce. I have been in Laramie, Wyo. for the last 12 years, but grew up in Southeastern Oregon. I’m thrilled for this opportunity to move back to my home state and be closer to family. For the past eight years, I have worked at the Laramie Chamber Business Alliance as the Vice President

of Membership. I have loved working in the Chamber of Commerce world and am excited for this new endeavor. I love meeting new people and learning about their busi-nesses. When I am not working, my husband and I and our German Shorthair Pointer love to camp, hike, and fish. We are looking forward to meeting everyone and making Grants Pass our new home!

Community Focus

Imagine yourself as a traveler along a section of the Applegate Trail in the late 1800's. You have just arrived by stage coach at the Wolf Creek Inn. This is a long-sought-after refuge from a not-so-comfortable journey over mountains and across valleys. After paying 75 cents for a room, bath, and meals, you're ready to relax. You sit down to a good meal and some easy conversation with the inn-keepers or other guests. Afterwards, the men sidle off to the tap room for some quaffs of beer while the ladies adjourn to

the parlor. The conversation drifts from tales of inspirational beauty to frightful experiences of the trail. The rooms are no longer 75 cents, but the refuge is still here preserved in its original state. The Inn is a great place to stopover when traveling the I-5 through Oregon yet remains well off the beaten track. We invite you to indulge in the his-tory that once was and have the feeling of taking a step back in time while staying at the inn, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

In front of the Inn, you'll find interpretive panels depicting life on the Applegate Trail. The inside of the building is open to public for Ranger-guided tours and self-guided tours while it is also a fully functioning Inn with 9 guest rooms. The Tavern is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Wednesday-Sunday. Everyone is invited to learn more about the history and view a building that has served guests since 1883!

Local residents can ride to the rescue of the riding arena at the Josephine Coun-ty Fairgrounds and help improve Jubi-

lee Park in Cave Junction by buying ducks for the Rotary Duck Derby on Sept. 22. The rubber ducks can be purchased for $10 each at more than 30 sites in Josephine County, including branches of Rogue Credit Union, the title sponsor; and Umpqua Bank. Other sales spots are the five new car dealers in town, the Daily Courier and KAJO. A com-plete list and other information can be found at www.rotaryduckderby.com. Ducks “adopted” are dumped into the Rogue River at Baker Park and “race” to Riv-erside Park. The first 12 or so ducks to enter a trap win prizes for their owners. The grand prize is $15,000 toward the purchase or lease of a new vehicle. Proceeds from the race will be split be-tween the start of renovation of the badly de-teriorated riding arena (75 percent) and new fencing and other improvements to Jubilee Park (25 percent). The race funds capital proj-ects that benefit local youth and their families. It is sponsored by the four Rotary Clubs in Jo-sephine County.

In its 15 years, the Rotary Duck Derby has raised more than $1.4 million. The money has gone to fund development of Morrison Park in Grants Pass, construction of all-weath-er tracks at all four local public high schools, building of the new Josephine County Food Bank storehouse, a teen center at the Boys & Girls Club, development of an amphitheater at Wildlife Images, the acquisition of 4-H live-stock pens and a spray park now under con-struction in Riverside Park.
