Foundational Principles
“Medical care is the doorway for evangelism…”
Prevention
Greater emphasis on prevention instead of curative medicine
Recognizes there will still be a need for curative medical care
Development
Long term development instead of recurring acute relief
Communities learn to develop long-term solutions rather than receiving short-term and short-lasting relief
Community OwnershipEnhances dignity of people created in God’s image and ensures lasting results
Help the local citizens identify their own problems and possible solutions
Help them identify resources they have available in their community, as well as how to access outside resources which they do not have
Community Ownership
Train and engage the local citizens at the “grassroots” in teaching people in their community and meeting community needs
Active participation by the people of the community and use of participatory learning methods
Mentor mature Christian leadership
Integration
Integration of spiritual and physical ministry
Addressing needs of the individual and the community holistically promotes well being of the individual physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and socially
Multiplication
Principles which are transferable and thus result in multiplication into other communities, with the initiative coming from the people of the local community
Enduring Ministry
The progress in a community becomes sustainable long-term without endless funding and people resources from the outside
Enduring Ministry
Local volunteers are trained to serve as leaders, organizers, evangelists, and health educators focusing on disease prevention
Focus on equipping of people rather than distributing handouts
Avoid fostering dependence on foreign dollars and people
Transformational Ministry
Transformation of individual lives
through new life in Christ results in
strong families, a healthier
community, and newly planted
churches
