When I’m adrift in the backstreets of Chorlton,
often dredging my mind for the title for an article, I sometimes notice things for the first time. What? There’s a road called Robert Shaw Avenue? Anyone who’s a fan of Jaws (and we are legion) knows why that name has me reaching for my camera. I, for one, am still afraid to go into the water.
But if you’re not afraid of the water (or even if you are) then you might be interested to learn of another aquatic-related landmark on our dry shores - the Manchester Diving Group. Moored alongside Chorlton bus station, this mock Tudor building has long held a fascination for me: What goes on in there? Is it a pool or something?
Well, thanks to a recent visit, I can now reveal all. And the short answer is no, it’s not a pool. What it is, though, is a clubhouse and licensed bar, walls adorned with marine life and maritime booty (much of which has been reclaimed from the sea by their own members); and what they offer is the opportunity to learn how to scuba dive.
The history of the club,
formerly known as The Sunlight House Divers, is a long and fascinating one reaching back to World War II. After the war, servicemen who had been trained to dive by the military continued to pursue the activity in civilian life, and in 1950 - with interest from the public growing - the first incarnation of MDG was set up.
However, with rationing still affecting all aspects of everyday life, there was so little money available that members had to make their own wetsuits, and even fashioned oxygen tanks from old gas cylinders. Thankfully, that’s all in the past and these days the club provides all the latest gear (bar the wetsuit) and training for any budding Jacques Cousteaus out there.

was adopted by the British Sub Aqua Club, starts with basic underwater skills at Chorlton Baths - before moving on to inland ‘quarry diving’ at Eccleston Delph, a five star diving facility in Lancashire. After that, the seabed is your oyster as you head out into open waters and visit some
of the most famous diving sites available.
Did you know that the Titanic’s sister ship, the Oceanic, lies two miles off the coast of Scotland? Or that the forerunner to the Cutty Sark, the Normancourt, sank in less than three metres off Anglesey? The Manchester Diving Group do. They’ve been to both.
And if you start training now, you could be down there with them on one of their next excursions, both here and abroad. All they ask is that you’re over 18 (16 with
parental consent) and that you’re in reasonably good health. Who knows? You might even find some treasure.

Back in April we were on the green enjoying the Horse & Jockey’s
500th celebrations with a travelling Shakespeare company.It was a lot of fun and took me back to just under 170 years ago and similar fun on the green.
In the long hot summer of 1847 many in the township would have been thinking of the harvest to come and if it turned out to be a good one then the harvest celebrations might also be well remembered. This would begin with the harvest home, where the last wagon loaded with the harvest would be decorated and escorted back accompanied by wives workers and children.
Later there would be the special harvest supper where the farmer rewarded his workers with food, alcohol and music. Later still there would be the religious thanksgiving.
Such celebrations only served to underline the rural aspect of so much of what passed for customs and entertainment in the first half of our century. Many of these dated back well into the past and were mirrored across the country, some even surviving as pale imitations in the nearby towns. They incorporated elements of popular history, frivolity and an ever present eye to making money. Processions of locals dressed in outlandish clothing
and carrying all manner of props visited the homes of the gentry and farmers putting on a show and expecting rewards in return. And these rewards were often seen as a means of eking out a household budget.
Here in the township some of the most important were played out during Easter week. By far the most spectacular was the custom of pace egging where a group of the younger villagers would dress up and act out the story of St George triumphing over his enemies. Dressed “with cardboard, tinsel, ribbon, calico, etc., of various colours, and presenting a very gaudy appearance, [they] would set off on the dawn of Good Friday for a tour of the village and the surrounding district, calling at the farmsteads, various residences, and public-houses, the occupants of which, expecting the call, were quite prepared to receive them. The company comprised “Open the Door,” “Saint George,” “Bold Slasher,” “Black Morocco King,” “Doctor,” “Doubt,” and “The
Devil,” and each carried a sword, with the exception of the doctor, who carried a large stick and bottle. One of the number was dressed as a lady, whose duty it was to carry the basket for the receipt of eggs and other gifts.”
In this form or something similar it was acted out across the country. In most plays St George would vanquish his opponent who would then be revived by the doctor and this well befitted Easter with its message of death and rebirth.

carried the basket for collecting the gifts on one arm freeing the other hand to hold a long straw tail full of sharp pins. This she would swing at
anyone who tried to grab the basket while at the same time encouraging all the onlookers to make a contribution. Only when the basket was deemed full did the play begin and after the valiant fight, some knock about humour and ribald exchanges with the audience the play would finish with a variation of the Pace Egging Song,
“Here’s one or two Jolly Boys, all of one mind
We’ve come a Pace-Egging, and hope you’ll prove kind
We hope you’ll prove kind with your eggs and strong beer
And we’ll come no more nigh you until next year. “
And for some of our actors it would have been the beer which was the added attraction particularly when the
performances were outside one of the local pubs. They may well have been welcomed at the homes of the wealthy like James Holt and Daniel Sharp and the better off farmers, but it was the pubs which offered that little bit more. For here there would be an audience whose generosity was fuelled by the beer and a landlord who would reap the benefit as the crowd celebrated the fun of the event with a drink. And as the players moved off to the next venue there would be a procession of children following them adding to the noise and fun of the event.

How long have you worked at JP & Brimelow?I’m in my 8th year.
Describe your job role.I should do everything (according to Eddie I’m his left hand man), however I look after all the sales for him in the Chorlton office. Once a sale has been agreed, I work with our vendors, buyers and solicitors for both parties to get the sale through to exchange and completion as smoothly as possible. It’s very satisfying on completion day to see happy clients and buyers and I often receive lovely gifts such as flowers and wine.
What’s special about Chorlton as a place?I love that Chorlton is quite Bohemian and independent with a laid back feel to it. There is such a really varied range of people from musicians to professors. You can never be sure who you are going to sell a house to and most people are genuinely very friendly.
Where’s your favourite restaurant or café in Chorlton for a lunch time meal?Too many to choose from, Croma and the Lead Station are favourites but I love The Horse & Jockey, their fat chips are delicious!
What are your hobbies and interests out of the wonderful world of JP & Brimelow?I enjoy reading and watching films on the sofa with my man. I love spending time with the kids and my family, going out for meals and a nice glass of wine. An occasional night out with the girls for a giggle and dance is a real stress buster.

March is a good planning time as the month
steers us into spring but also because the full pelt of summer has yet to appear on the bare bones of the garden and we still have the opportunity to plan our shapes and schemes for the coming year. One of the key things to think about when planning an outside space is the balance of elements. Evaluate the size of your space and try to balance the zones (i.e. lawn, planting beds, patio/seating area) so that each is properly represented – a tiny lawn and huge planting beds can look
very unbalanced but equally, all lawn and little planting can look very bland despite the need to crowbar in an enormous swing-set. Often a seating area in a small garden is reduced to make way for more of the other elements but this can be short sighted – a tiny deck always looks odd. Other things to think about in larger gardens is how to create different and interesting spaces (again with an eye on how this is balanced) so the whole space isn’t seen at once. These spaces could be delineated by planting or simple pergolas. Of course, it is also about priorities and use, and for some gardeners the preference is to be more organic in the planning stages, popping in what comes to hand
or is given throughout the year. Others have a perpetual eye on how the outside space is viewed as a whole, bringing to bear the design lexicon of shape, form and function early in the year. Both approaches can make beautiful gardens but the former takes some skill to make it work properly and whilst I can be rigorous in planning other peoples gardens, in my own garden I have been seduced by a romantic temperament at times. These discussions have also been had in the most spectacular of our nations gardens. In 1946, the author Harold Nicolson wrote about an afternoon argument with Vita Sackville-West in their Sissinghurst garden brought about by Vita’s wish to ‘jab in’ left over plants with no regard to planning or design. He goes on to say:“The tragedy of the romantic temperament is that it dislikes form so much that it ignores the effect of colour. She wants to put in stuff which ‘will give a lovely red colour in the autumn’. I wish to put in stuff which will furnish shape to the perspective. In the end we part, not as friends.”

Only just out in paperback, this unusual novel is receiving all kinds of praise and award nominations. The strange title, when translated into German means “Himmler’s brain is called Heydrich”. Heydrich was the evil behind the holocaust and actually came up with the Final Solution. This factual novel deals with the build up to and
brutal reprisals of Heydrich’s death in Prague 1942. Even the page layout is unusual, written in 257 chapters with no page numbers.Calling this book a novel seems misleading. Although narrated by a fictional narrator who is himself trying to create a novel, everything he writes about is based on fact. This causes him all kinds of creative problems as surely it’s a novelist’s role to make things up. In this situation so much is known and documented he finds it almost impossible to create original dialogue
between characters as much of it has already been written down by actual witnesses. However the author does succeed in creating an original take on a horrific period of Czech history.This book will definitely appeal to those with an interest in WW II but also those looking for something a bit different. If this proves to be too much of a clinical read I recommend “The Visible World”, written by Mark Slouka. This also deals with the assassination and its reprisals as well as the guilt of those that survived the war.
A children’s poetry anthology isn’t a new idea by any means, but this is wonderfully well done. What makes it special is the stylish presentation, and the sheer quality of
the selections. Rather than rattling off the same old choices, Duffy looks to expand young readers’ horizons by including work by classic writers - Yeats, Coleridge, Auden, Emily Dickinson – as well as contemporary poets like Ian McMillan, Jackie Kay and John Hegley. Simply put, if it’s good, it’s in. There’s no segregation by era either, just an intelligent, gently thematic running order that weaves the lot together. Bold,
surprising, entertaining and full of variety, it’s marbled through with subtle illustrations by children’s favourite Emily Gravett. Editor Carol Ann Duffy, the current Poet Laureate, is herself an experienced children’s author (and South Manchester resident to boot). This beautiful, nifty little volume speaks of a genuinely love of poetry and could well inspire one in turn.9-12 years (paperback due May 2013)
Set in one South London street, this novel features a whole host of universally recognisable characters.Innocently going about their lives they are all disturbed one day when they receive a mysterious postcard. The postcard reads “We want what
you have”. Who is behind these messages? However this is simply one of the many subplots which makes up this many layered novel.The title refers not only to London but to our love of money and all it can offer. The novel also explores what happens when this wealth is taken away suddenly as the plot follows the beginning of the current financial crisis. Although plot is very important
in this story the characters really are at the centre. They are fantastically described and could be found in any city suburb.This is a really good read which deals with current political and social issues. Described as a “State of the Nation” novel this may well be read in years to come by people studying the current horrific financial situation we are in and how we got there!

Chorlton Traders News Approximately 30
members of the business community joined the
inaugural meeting of Chorlton Traders Association (CTA) at the end of January. We were delighted to be joined by Stewart Chitty, Community Police Constable, Kirsteen Armitage, South Manchester Regeneration Team and Mark Glynn, South Manchester Neighbourhood Delivery Team. We discussed the core principles of CTA in terms of making Chorlton a retail destination, increasing footfall for retail organisations, creating opportunities for business-to-business networking and sharing best
practice.
In addition to the great networking opportunities, on a practical level CTA is for instance exploring how Chorlton can be developed as a healthy and sustainable environment in which to do business, capitalising on the arrival and extension to Didsbury of Metrolink, reducing graffiti, creating awareness of scams, etc.
An immediate project for our local community, in conjunction with the Council and JP & Brimelow estate agent, is the introduction of a number of planters around the district centre. CTA is working closely with Green Chorlton in terms of the stocking
and maintenance of the forthcoming planters.

First you’ll need to improvise a tofu press. This needs to be a container with holes for the soya whey to flow out of and a lid to press down on the soy curds. It could be a colander and a small plate, a cutlery drainer and a storage jar or you could drill holes in and trim the lid of a 1l plastic storage box.
Home made tofu anyone?Making your own tofu is easy! This is a simple, rough and ready method of making this popular and nourishing food. Traditionally the soy milk is curdled using magnesium chloride or nigari but we’re just going to use vinegar or lemon juice.We’re also going to use ready-made soy milk, although we might show you how to make that in a later edition.
You will need:•1l unsweetened soy milk (these days they call it drink) •About15mlor3teaspoonsofvinegarorlemonjuice•Animprovisedtofupress(seebelow)•Acleanteatowel•Aheavyishobjectwhichfitsinsideyourtofupress•Apanwhicheasilycontainsthesoymilk•Acoolingrackorcolanderandamixingbowl
1 Pour the soy milk into a large pan. Place on a moderate heat until nearly, but not quite boiling - around 95°C if you fancy using a thermometer.

The Scroungers Golf Society teamed up again with Chorlton
Golf Club to raise another fabulous sum of over £3,000 to buy a powered scooter to help change the life of a severely disabled youngster.They defied poor weather to enjoy a great day on the Chorlton course and then set about raising funds with donations, fines etc at the après golf dinner before enjoying seeing the 169th scooter they have raised money to buy being presented.
The recipient was 12-year-old Katie Gaskell from Salford who attends Oakwood College in Eccles.
Katie suffers from cerebral palsy and Bulber Palsy which inhibits her speech but she made a great effort to thank
the Scroungers and Chorlton officers.
Her hobbies are wheelchair dancing and latterly wheelchair football and at college she is involved with football, drama and art as well as being a staunch Manchester United fan.
Scroungers Captain Len O’Hagan said: “It was another great day for the Scroungers and our thanks go to Chorlton Golf Club for again being very generous hosts and giving terrific support.
“There have never been more than 24 members of the Scroungers over the 20 plus years we have been playing and raising money and this now totals over half a million pounds - a fantastic amount.
“Our members come from a range of clubs such as Saddleworth, Blackley, Oldham and Chorlton and it is great to
see the hard work they have put in give such pleasure and life improvement to youngsters such as Katie.”
There is plenty of local interest in the race for the prestigious
Levenshulme Snooker League’s division one title.South West Manchester CC led by skipper Ronnie Singh (pictured) are in the thick of the action along with the Lauriston Club.
South West enjoyed a run of six wins before leaders Withington Bowls B ended the winning streak.
An emphatic 6-1 score-line sees Withington maintain a three point lead over Longsight CC B team.
Longsight continued Ladybarn’s recent travails as they inflicted their seventh defeat in their last eight games.
South West drop into fourth

Road in Chorlton has been proud of its encouragement and development of junior cricket for over 120 years.They are looking for volunteers to help and support the thriving junior section for next season.
Phil Marshall said: “Volunteers don’t need to know anything about cricket to be of help to us but if they do so much the better.
“If anyone has any suggestions or would like to offer their time to support any part of the
junior section they can contact me on 07779 116165.
“We are holding two junior registration evenings in March and if there are any juniors between nine-17 (boys or girls) who might be interested we would welcome them to come along with parents or guardians to these evenings when we can give them information about teams and training and answer any relevant questions.”
The much vaunted Olympic legacy has certainly made its
mark at Trafford Athletic Club in recent weeks.The club situated at its superb Longford Stadium base on the border of Chorlton and Stretford has had great success over the years in developing young talent through to the top echelons of athletics and has teams of all ages and abilities in the full range of athletic events as well as cross country.
It also caters for people who just wish to keep fit and not be involved in competitive athletics with its excellent facilities both on and off the
track.
Since the huge success of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Trafford AC officials are delighted with the influx of juniors to the club.
Trafford AC official Mike Harris said: “We have had well over new 100 youngsters between the ages of 8-14 coming down to enjoy the sessions we hold on week night evenings and they are giving our coaches a great boost with their infectious enthusiasm for athletics.
“We always welcome
youngsters to the club with them of giving them the opportunity to develop their skills but also to enjoy the club socially and anyone interested is invited to come down on a Thursday evening from 6.30pm to see what is on offer or telephone the club on 0161 881 4488.”
