Main Street Streetscape Design Options

• these preliminary design options are based on:

– Huntsville – Main Street Streetscape & Kent Park

– Request for Proposal

(Engineering & Urban Design Services for the Reconstruction/Streetscaping of Main Street)

• an informational report was delivered to Huntsville Council on February 24, 2020 to

receive initial Council feedback on preliminary Streetscape Design options.

FLEXIBLE (FLEX) PARKING

Flex Parking

• some on-street parking may be

closed to vehicles at times to

provide a widened sidewalk zone

(for example - during summer

months) to provide seasonal patios

for restaurants, or during special

events

• acts as a traffic calming device

• asphalt

Muskoka Moments

• “Muskoka Moments” provide

amenity seating and planting areas

(with trees) along the street

• MM’s are located at the end of flex

parking zones where practical;

• open planting beds are able to

accommodate trees, shrubs,

perennials, and seating areas and

are framed by Muskoka boulders;

• “Muskoka Moments” options:

• placement & locations

• surface: concrete pavers or

C.I.P. concrete (typical sidewalk

surface)

• vegetation options;

Crossing • crosswalks (2) will be AODA

(Accessibility for Ontarians with

Disabilities Act) compliant with

tactile plates and visual/audible

signals;

• upgraded surfaces (from typical

asphalt) promote traffic calming, but

come at an additional cost;

• enhanced surface treatment

proposed along King Street, which

can include unit paving across the

surface, to make a pedestrian

connection between River Mill Park

and Main Street and to parking in

the area.

• asphalt with painted lines

• imprinted asphalt

• Crossing options:

• C.I.P. concrete (typical sidewalk

surface)

• concrete pavers

• granite pavers

KENT PARK

Kent Park

• Kent Park (between Brunel and

Main Street) rejuvenation;

• spaces for resting, lunch and

meeting;

• flex spaces;

• removable ‘information kiosk’ – will

provide flexibility of Park for special

events and to provide visitor

information;

• Kent Park options:

• walking/pedestrian surface:

granite pavers or concrete pavers

• addition of electrical outlets

• water feature importance versus

sitting space and flexibility

LORNE STREET GATEWAY

Lorne Street

Gateway

• a new gateway at Lorne Street and

Main Street is proposed to mark the

entrance where a broad view of

Downtown Huntsville unfolds;

• Lorne Street landmark creates a

sense of arrival, and works with the

Muskoka River bridge to bookend

the downtown;

• Lorne Street Gateway options:

• enhanced feature

• major feature

• no feature?

Planning for 2021

Streetscape Communications Plan

Huntsville BIA to lead project communications and branding, in

partnership with Town of Huntsville, District of Muskoka and Huntsville

Lake of Bays Chamber of Commerce

Communications Plan & Branding Strategy: in progress

Goal: Launch before summer 2020

Determine budget allocation between all four (4) partners: in progress
