2. PRINCIPAL JOB PURPOSE

As part of the Community and Information Services team the post holder will support people to learn and develop in the context of the College’s community services’ programmes as well as elements of community learning and development work which underpin other aspects of college programmes.

The post holder will support the College’s Community Achievement Awards programme, its Youth Access programme and/or the Transitions to Learning and Work programme as appropriate to experience and in response to college and community needs.

The post holder will contribute to the College planning and quality enhancement process, and will seek to ensure that the community learning services delivered by Glasgow Kelvin College are of high quality and meet the needs of the College’s learners, communities, staff and wider stakeholders.

3. MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The College’s Community Learning and Development Workers’ primary role is to assist with the provision and development of the College’s community learning services;

Community Achievement Awards programme:

develop positive relationships with people in communities supported by the College through direct work with them, supporting their initial enrolment for the Glasgow Kelvin College Community Achievement Awards;

work with individuals and groups to engage people in lifelong learning opportunities that relate to their community activities and interests and raising awareness of further lifelong learning opportunities;

Support and encourage people to become involved in, assist with the delivery of, deliver

and develop community activities;

Support the College’s community partners to develop their capacity to deliver Glasgow Kelvin College Community Achievement Awards;

Youth Access Programme:

develop positive relationships with young people through direct work with them, supporting their capacity to ‘commission’ learning activities and tutor support in relevant areas;

engage young people in recreational and learning activities related to the use of information, communication and learning technologies by providing diversionary activities and raising awareness of further lifelong learning opportunities;

agree personal learning targets with and support young people towards certificated achievements;

support and assist in the development of a range of activities for young people, including

o supporting access to Internet and word processing resources to assist young people in the completion of ‘homework’ related tasks;

o website creation;

o music creation with CD and web publishing options;

o the safe use of Internet, email and social networking software supporting inter-neighbourhood communication and collaboration;

o access to flexible learning opportunities supported online by College teaching staff;

o access to network facilities for young people enrolled on College courses;

o the use of networked, multi-player games including development of local leagues as appropriate;

Transitions to Learning and Work and other daytime programmes

design and support young people’s activities which develop the skills and confidence required to enable transitions from dependence to independence;

design and support young people’s activities which lead to the development of creative skills;

develop positive relationships with young people through direct work with them, supporting their capacity to ‘commission’ vocational ‘tasters’ in areas related to their interests and aspirations;

General:

Enrol people into the College’s community learning programmes and undertake all administrative and registration duties required: including student enrolment, registration, course and class information and student withdrawals;

coordinate, plan and facilitate developmental group work activities based on single and multiple learning centre and partner venue sites;

support people to engage in activities which support recognition of achievement through other awards such as John Muir Awards and Saltire Awards as appropriate

promote the College’s community learning programmes to staff and clients within other community services;

maintain an orderly and safe learning environment;

attend meetings as and when required;

produce management information in report formats as requested;

establish and maintain contact with relevant agencies;

refer people to support agencies as appropriate;

assist in monitoring and evaluation of the College’s community services;

carry out any other relevant duties appropriate to the grade of the post subsequently allocated by the Principal and/or his/her nominee necessary to meet the exigencies of the service; and

undertake appropriate professional development to meet any needs which may subsequently be identified by the College’s career development review process.

4. COMMUNICATIONS (Internal & External)

Community Learning and Development Workers will communicate regularly using a variety of methods with key internal and external stakeholders and partners.

The post-holder has key internal working relationships with staff at all levels, but specifically the College’s Community Services Curriculum Managers and Senior Curriculum Manager and Head of Community and Information Services.

The post-holder is required to provide written and other reports on activities and outcomes to the College’s Community Services Curriculum Managers and Senior Curriculum Manager and Head of Community and Information Services.

Community Learning and Development Workers will have some autonomy in setting objectives and agreeing activities with learners, within broad parameters set by the Head of Community and Information Services and will be accountable for delivery of these objectives.

6. Essential KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Qualifications: Educated to HNC (SCQF level 7) or above in community development or youth work or

equivalent in an appropriate subject; Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.

Demonstrable Knowledge of: Community learning and development principles and practice; Group work and individual work applied to community learning and development settings; Awards designed to support people to learn and achieve; Social inclusion issues and principles; Partnership working;

Skills and Competencies: Basic competence with information technology (use of the Internet, email, games, image,

audio or video editing software); Good communication and people management skills; Good reporting skills; Ability to form positive relationships with learners, staff and partners.

Experience: Significant experience in provision of community learning and development services; Experience of Developing innovative services; Working with a range of community services; and Partnership working.

7. WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Physical: The post will involve learning centre and other community venue based work, and the

requirement to travel to and between venues as needed Operation of a wide range of information technology, including:

o Personal computers for supporting young people to create and communicate and for the production of reports as required;

o Laptops and data projectors for delivering PowerPoint presentations; ando Mobile communications
