Sir John Monash Awards – 2018

Monash is served by amazing volunteers each year who give their time to achieve remarkable things. While they give so much to our community, you have the chance to give back to them. If you know one of these amazing people, please nominate them for one of the categories below:

The eight categories of the awards are:

• Multicultural Champion • Active Monash • Outstanding Advocate of

People with Disabilities • Sustainability Leadership • Youth Leadership Award • Volunteer of the Year • Inspirational Women’s Leadership • Positive Ageing Leadership

Nominations open in early 2018. Please watch out in the Monash Bulletin, Leader Newspaper and Council website for more info, or contact Jenny Luzza on 9518 3619 from March 2018.

General Sir John Monash, for whom Monash is named, was a civil engineer and volunteer soldier during World War 1. By the end of the war he had risen to the highest rank in the Australian Army and is regarded as one of Australia’s greatest heroes. It is only fitting that these awards are named after Sir John Monash.

Photo above: The 2017 Positive Ageing Leadership recipient, Kathleen Banks proudly holding her award. Kathleen has been dedicated to providing support to war widows and the wives of ex-servicemen. She also served on the War Widows Guild Victorian Committee and at the wonderful age of 90 continues to advocate for war widows and their families.

Power of Attorney Your voice – Trust your choices

Tips for seniors making enduring powers of attorney ‘Your voice – Trust your choice’ is a practical guide to help older Victorians to safely appoint a Power of Attorney. An enduring power of attorney is where you give someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf. The majority of enduring powers of attorney work well. Unfortunately, in some cases, family members, carers or friends abuse their authority as power of attorney and take advantage of that authority. This is one of the most devastating forms of elder abuse.

The booklet includes helpful tips and sample wording to encourage older people to safely decide upon an enduring power of attorney. It is a companion booklet to Office of the Public Advocate’s Taking Control: a guide for making enduring powers of attorney. The guide will assist older people to minimise the risk of abuse when appointing an enduring power of attorney, so that:

• it captures their wishes about decisions that are made on their behalf

• ensures that the right people are involved in decisions that are made on their behalf.

The booklet is available on the Office of the Public Advocate website: www.publicadvocate.vic.gov.au/power-of-attorney or by contacting Legal Aid publications: 9269 0234
