Phe-Momenal Handmade Gift Ideas for

MOTHER’S DAY

Recent survey findings published in an article from The Week magazine, “The Economics of Mother’s Day: By the Numbers” seem to support Gardner’s opinion. According to the study, 36 percent of mothers surveyed preferred to receive handmade gifts, the highest percentage of all gift options given.

This is good news for the growing number of craft enthusiasts across the country who take great pleasure in showing their gratitude by making gifts for their mom with their own hands. To make things a little easier, the following DIY Mother’s Day gift ideas from Stampin’ Up! will help you create treasured keepsakes for Mom on her special day. m

According to experts in the do-it-yourself crafting industry, you’ll make the most impact with your gift this Mother’s Day by offering Mom something handmade.

“Showing your love and appreciation for Mom doesn’t have to be expensive,” said Shelli Gardner, CEO and cofounder of crafting company Stampin’ Up!. “The gift with the great-est impact, the one that shows you truly want your mom to feel special, is the one you make yourself.”

Our road to making a difference for Autism Speaks really began when Griffin was diagnosed with Autism at age 4 and a half. He had multiple diagnoses, including a very rare genetic anomaly of which there were only 4 people in the world with the same diagnosis. He also had a diagnosis of developmental delay. He continues to have qualitative impairments in the areas of communication, social interaction and independent living skills. In April 2007, at the age of 3 years 4 months, Emerson, our youngest son was also diagnosed with Autism, specifically Asperger’s Syndrome. Our house became immersed in all the theories and practices of how to engage these boys in our world.

As we waited for services to help Griffin and Emerson, my husband and I learned as much as we could about autism and ways to help our boys. I applied and was accepted in the Autism and Behavioural Sciences Program at Mohawk College. While working as a Special Education teacher with the Peel District School Board, I earned my Certificate as an IBI therapist to use the techniques with Grif-fin and Emerson to help them learn. The

following year I became an ASD Itinerant teacher with PDSB to continue to help those with children on the spectrum. Our family continued to look for ways to help in the Autism Community, and that lead us to Autism Speaks.

Our family has participated in the Autism Speaks walk since 2008. We originally raised money through our immediate family and friends and went down to participate in the Walk Now for Autism Speaks at Nathan Phillips Square. After the second year of the Bush Bunch par-ticipating in the walk, our oldest daughter Shaelynne, who was in grade 8 at the time, approached me with wanting to do more. As part of a returning team for the walk, we received a package that included a pamphlet on ways to help fundraise. Shaelynne studied this list, trying to figure out what would be the best way for her to raise money. At age 13, she decided that a garage sale was the way to go. She drafted a flyer to advertise to friends and neighbours and delivered them door to door. Her flyer elicited donations from the community of items for the sale. Neighbours and community members

also came to the sale to purchase items, where all money raised went to Autism Speaks Canada. Her goal that first year was to raise $1,000. She surpassed that goal, raising $2,100.

In the years following, Shaelynne con-tinued to create a flyer to promote the annual garage sale. Family and friends helped her distribute them to over 2,500 homes each year. At the garage sale, school friends and family helped to set up, sell and tidy up the 2 day event.

Every year Shaelynne set a monetary goal to reach, and every year she sur-passed that goal. Beginning in year one, her goal was $1,000, she raised $2,100. Year 2, she set the goal of $3,000 and raised over that amount. Year 3, her goal was $4,000 and she raised over $5,000. Year 4 her goal was $5,500 and the sale raised over $6,000. Year 5 her goal was originally $6,500 but as the money and donations kept coming in she amended that to $8,000 but in the end, triumphed by raising over $10,000. Overall, The Bush Bunch has raised over $28,000 for Autism Speaks Canada.

Shaelynne and our family have become the faces of Autism in our local commu-nity. It is inspiring to hear community members acknowledge Shaelynne and the annual garage sale. Some neighbours have even reported that they have started collecting items for this event all year long. Our family, friends and local com-munity are so proud to be part of this great annual event.

As the years have progressed, local com-munity businesses began to donate new items or gift certificates, and so the idea of holding raffles for these items became a second part of the garage sale. Each year, additional community business’s join to support our fundraiser. Over the years local community members have shown their appreciation for all the hours Shae-lynne has spent organizing the sale. m

IF YOU HAVE ANY ITEMS YOU WISH TO DONATE, PLEASE BE IN TOUCH WITH US [email protected]

Monetary donations can be made on the Autism Speaks website under Shaelynne Bush or the Bush Bunch team.

http://support.autismspeaks.ca/goto/thebushbunch

Mayor, Hazel McCallion personally wrote Shaelynne a letter in 2010, commending her for her hard work and efforts to raise awareness of Autism and Asperger Syn-dome. She goes on to note that Shaelynne ‘is a wonderful example of how one person can make a difference in the lives of others, and have shown that age is not a barrier to making a contribution.’ Councillor Nando Iannicca, in 2014 also recognized her ded-ication, generosity and commitment as a volunteer in Mississauga. The Bush Bunch has been featured in various newspapers and television segments advertising and celebrating the sale.

Each year our family is so proud to attend the Walk Now for Autism Speaks in Toronto. We are both amazed and sad-dened as the event continues to grow and we see more and more families/teams joining in to support those affected by Autism. At the walk in 2008, one of the information posters stated that 1 in 110 children would be diagnosed with Autism. The 2014 numbers have just been posted and that number has dropped to 1 in 68 children of which 1 in 42 are boys.

In 2011, Shaelynne was invited to speak at The Walk in Toronto, providing her story as a sibling of two brothers on the spectrum. She was so honoured to speak about the challenges and struggles that our family faces on a daily basis. Simple things like sticking to a schedule and keeping things the same at home are very important for her brothers. Going places and having to wait in line or dealing with crowds are all situations that our family must prepare for. Shaelynne notes that even going on a simple outing to the zoo or to the dentist takes planning and thought, whereas her friends with typical sib-lings don’t have to worry. Shaelynne is proud of her ability to raise money for autism and educate her friends and family about the impact that children with special needs have on families.

In 2014 Shaelynne was invited to cut the ribbon to begin the walk. It was a great honour to be recognized for her hard work and dedication. Shaelynne along with her siblings, Emerson and Colleen carried the banner the entire length of the walk.

Shaelynne and our family continue to be blessed by meeting many generous and kind community members who donate to our sale and come to help us raise money and awareness about Autism. We are so

thankful for the welcoming attitudes we see from those who participate with us in this event. Giving back to the community and sharing our knowledge and experience with autism is part of our life as a family. One simple thought by a 13 year old has put us on a wonderful journey. The Bush Bunch is on a mission to keep raising money and make a difference. Although we know that there is no medical detec-tion or cure for autism yet, one day we hope that there will be. CL

Rattray Marsh has seen a lot of change in recent years. On Wednes-day, November 19, (2014), local residents came together for an information session to learn about steps being taken to restore the health of Rattray Marsh Conservation Area.

A large part of restoring the marsh involves removing layers of sediment that have literally buried in the marsh’s native ecosystem. We’ve been able to remove the sed-iment from the northern portion of the marsh and now we are setting our sites on the southern portion. Sediment was deposited in the marsh from years of upstream development around Sheridan Creek. The end result will be less sediment, greater water depth, more native plant life and an opportunity for native fish and wildlife to thrive.

The other big changes seen at the Conservation Area is the destructive impact of emerald ash borer (EAB). EAB is an invasive beetle that kills 99.9 % of North American trees. Unfortunately, the Conservation Area has large portions with up to 80% ash tree cover. What does this mean for the Conservation Area’s forests? It means that there will be a lot of tree loss in the short term. We are working hard to make sure the Conservation Area’s forests rebound as quickly as possible. We are managing ash trees at the Conservation Area by inoculating healthy trees against EAB and removing infested trees that pose a hazard to people on trails and private property.

The most important thing we can do is replant trees for the future. We are reaching out to the local community with the Save Our Ash fundraising Campaign. All money raised goes to inoculating ash trees and planting new trees at Rattray Marsh Conservation Area. We have received many donations from the local residents and businesses and we are encouraged by the positive response so far.

Our community partner Michael’s Hair Body Mind gener-ously matched all Save our Ash pledges received on the day of the November 19 information session. Michael’s is a staunch ally in the effort to restore the marsh. They are committed to improving the local environment and keeping Mississauga beautiful.

You can help Rattray Marsh Conservation Area recover from the emerald ash borer by contributing to the Save our Ash Campaign on line www.cvcfoundation.ca or by calling the Credit Valley Conservation Foundation at 905-542-9159.CL

Students from LP are engaged in regional competition in the Mock Trial Program. This competition allows students interested in law to experi-ence the courtroom environment supported by LP staff and lawyers. It is a great opportunity for our students to ‘test drive’ careers related to the law and gain a greater understanding of this field.

Students from LP are in Philadelphia participating in the model UN Assembly. This is an annual event that student from LP engage in, to amplify and extend the programs here at LP. We also have students out on our annual winter camping program in Arrowhead Provincial Park as a part of our leadership program as well.

Advanced Placement Comes to LP!

Students at LP will have access starting this year to the opportunity to write Advanced Placement (AP) examinations set by the American College Board. Success in these examinations can provide students an opportunity to move directly to second year programs in many post secondary schools. In addition universities have reported that students, successful in the AP, are better prepared for success in university. AP exams cover a wide range of subject areas allowing students to focus on areas of interest or ability. For more information on the AP, check out the LP website AP page:

www.schools.peelschools.org/sec/lornepark/academics/AdvancedPlacement/Pages/default.aspx

Students in the Drama program have advanced this month to the final rounds of the Sears Drama Festival competitions occurring at the begin-ning of March. These plays are entirely student written and directed and are a manifestation of student creativity and talent. We are looking forward to great results as the Drama students of LP compete in this festival.

A naturally robust and earthy wine red, Marsala enriches our minds, bodies and souls. Let’s journey to Sicily this spring. Whether you indulge your sense of adventure with a trip to this romantic region of Italy or you take a sensorial trip with your senses - think wine. Marsala is a rich, robust, full-bodied, elegant wine, which is why it’s no surprise that this beautiful red brown tone aptly named for its characteristics is the most dominant colour trend for spring 2015.

This spring on the catwalk, Marsala is being featured as an accent colour and can be paired with many other colours. It can be com-bined with neutrals, warm taupes, turquoise, greens, blues or “shades of grey”. This universal colour appeals to our sense of adventure, it captures the mind, it captivates the eyes, and it warms our soul just like your favourite Marsala wine.

This impactful colour dominated the runways with fashion designers this past fall where it was unveiled. Christian Dior featured Marsala throughout his collection with bold geometric splashes used as a graphic contrast against blacks, whites and hues of yellows and blues. Alternatively this same aesthetic was featured in toned

down feminine floral prints. Stripes are a constant and should be a staple of your spring wardrobe. Chanel took full advantage of this inspirational hue and featured it as the must have shade for luscious lips. This statement look dominated the neutral pallet, creating a perfectly balanced look for a flawless finish to an under made up face. If you want to look classy and chic, or bold and daring, this look will appeal to mature women as well as the mini fashionistas. Being a versatile colour, it will compliment almost all skin tones to create a subtle or a sultry look depending on its application. If you are not a glammanista, it could be the choice for your manicure or pedicure.

Let the world know you are just as adventurous and on trend with your fashion choices as they are. A simple update to your hair or make-up is good for your inner diva, and Marsala might just be the colour to accomplish that. Now you are ready for your sensorial trip to Sicily.
