“People live in dignity and share in all aspects of living in their community.”

Nothing brightens up a cold, long winter like a friendly competition. To build on the work of the Agency’s Strategic Plan, the Community Inclusion Committee kicked off the work of Community Living-Central Huron’s Strategic Planning by engaging the Residential and SIL teams in a friendly competition. They held the “Inclusive Community Options” contest which ran from October 2017-December 2017. This was an opportunity to highlight the person-directed, valued and inclusive options for individuals their teams support. Aligning with the strategic plan, the contest demonstrated the promotion of social inclusion, individual choice, rights and independence, and full participation within the community. The Community Inclusion Committee would like to congratulate the SIL Team on their win, submitting the most Activity Review Forms with 31 entries! The competition was very close and a well-deserved Honorable Mention goes to Team C.

The Community Inclusion Committee is holding its second contest, Most Creative Community Participation. The contest runs from February 22, 2018 to May 22, 2018 and will highlight

creative approaches that lead to an inclusive community option for people supported. We cannot wait to see the ideas come to fruition and to celebrate as the Agency takes another step toward full inclusion.

I love this recipe for Sheppard’s Pie:

INGREDIENTS:1 lb ground beef½ bag frozen corn5 to 6 large potatoes, peeled and chopped1 red onion chopped into small pieces

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:Boil potatoes until soft, then mash. Fry the beef with the onions. In a pan, spread the corn on the bottom, layer with beef and top with potatoes. Spread butter and parsley on the top and bake in the oven at 375 for 30 minutes. Broil for 15 minutes.

This is the 10th year that the Board of Directors Community Living-Central Huron proudly offers two (2) Scholarships.

The Evelyn M. Carroll Scholarship is available to students with a developmental disability who are pursuing post-secondary education, training or apprenticeship. Mrs. Carroll began as a volunteer with the Agency and later became an employee; she was very passionate about supports, services and opportunities for all citizens. The scholarship was named in her honour.

The Florence and Arthur Maskell Scholarship is available to students who are pursuing post-secondary education in the field of developmental services. The Maskells generously contributed monies to the Agency, allowing the Board to provide the scholarship.

The deadline for both scholarships is Friday, May 11, 2018.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact CL-CH at 519-524-7362 or [email protected].

Last Light Photo Show and SaleThe eleventh annual Last Light Photo Show and Sale will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 2pm-4pm at the Goderich Library.

The event was first held in 2006 to honour Sarah Mann, a talented young woman with a passion for photography. Initially, the subject matter for the contest was sunsets, a favourite subject of Sarah’s, and how the contest got its name “last light”.

This year the categories are: Weather Event; Colour Theme: Black & White; and the image of # 11, to commemorate the 11th year of the event.

The deadline for photo submissions is Tuesday, May 1, 2018. Entry forms and further details can be found on the CL-CH website: www.clch.ca or can be picked up at the Goderich office.

The event is sponsored by MacEwan & Feagan Insurance Brokers Limited, Lighthouse Money Management and the Goderich Signal-Star.

Proceeds of the event go to Community Living-Central Huron.

Gerbera Daisy SaleJust in time for Mothers’ Day! Individuals who are part of the Employment Support Program have organized the annual Gerbera

Daisy fundraising sale. The sale will be held on Wednesday, May 9, Thursday, May 10 and Friday, May 11.

A variety of colourful gerbera daisies in 4” pots will be available for sale at a number of locations in Goderich including: Community Living-Central Huron, 267, Suncoast Drive East, Suncoast Mall, Scotia Bank, The Beer Store, and Shannahan’s, as well as Libro Credit Union in Clinton.

Pots will be sold for $5 each and money raised goes to Community Living-Central Huron’s Employment Support Program.

Last year over 600 pots were sold and over $1000 was raised.

Annual Golf ClassicOn Thursday, June 14 and Friday, June 15, 2018, the 12th Annual Goderich and District Golf Classic will be held at the Sunset Golf Club, just north of Goderich. This event is one of the largest fundraising events for Community Living. Last year, the event raised over $30,000, increasing the ten-year total to just over $240,000. The funds raised assist individuals involved with the various programs of CL-CH including the Activity Centre, Employment Support, Community Support for Families, as well as Respite and Residential Services. The Agency supports over 400 individuals with physical and developmental disabilities who benefit from community programs and services.

The 30th annual Heartwarming Luncheon was held at the Goderich Legion Branch 109, Friday, February 9, 2018. Once again the community came together for an outstanding turnout.

For the second year, the event included the Dave Mounsey

Memorial Fund Award; this has been a terrific partnership.Over 800 lunches were served and delivered, thanks to numerous volunteers. The funds raised assist the Agency to provide quality programs and services, and to assist individuals in numerous ways.
