DESCRIPTION

We've shared some recent examples and practical approaches for mapping your world of good using the tools and methods developed at socialsca.pe. Since September 2012, we have worked with 24 partners on 3 continents, including governments, communities and networks, to develop engaging programs that identify and connect the people, programs and organizations that make up their community. We’d love to hear from you on how you’d use some of these tools to map your community. Let us know how we can help. Feel free to reach out via email at [email protected] or @socialscapeHQ on twitter.

Since September 2012, we have worked with

The value of mappingWe all benefit from knowing more about the

organizations, people, and programs that make up our community, whether we are a social entrepreneur, policy

maker, community organizer, or capacity builder.

Both the activity and outputs of mapping lead to:

• improved awareness and engagement for existing activities

• increased diffusion and replication of existing solutions

• new connections that reduce risk of failure and shorten time to scale

• new interventions with greater effectiveness

• heightened sense of pride and connection with our communities

Our methods and tools include:

• An online interface for public participation and engagement

• Social methods to engage your community in-person and online

• Physical and virtual data cards to embed data collection in new and existing programs

• Crowd-powered data services to automate and improve the process of cleansing, improving and maintaining your data

At in-person mapping events, on average, each person identifies 20 new organizations, people and programs in their community.

For example…

E.g. Community engagement

In July 2013 we worked with Pillar Nonprofit Network to gather key stakeholders to map their community. Over the course of one morning 16 people mapped 451 programs and organizations.

Outcomes:

• “The best list of social innovation in the city”

• New perspectives on the makeup of the community and potential collaborations

• Media coverage in print, online, and TV

E.g.Embedded in an event

In March 2014, a partner asked us to embed social enterprise mapping into the region’s premier impact investing conference. We gave every participant 3 mapathons cards and they gave us a list of 281 entries.

Outcomes:

• Over 200 participants directly engaged in mapping their community

• Enquires in follow-on mapping activities from participants as far away as Chile

E.g. Multi-partner rollout

In December 2013, the Government of Ontario approached us to help map social enterprises in Ontario. Over 6 weeks in 2014, we conducted 7 mapathons engaging over 150 participants and identifying over 2,000 data points.

Outcomes:

• Over a dozen local partners engaged

• Over 12,000 views online

• More than a half dozen expressions of interest in follow-on mapping activities

Additional Use Cases• A virtual brainstorming session to identify a global set of

organizations addressing a common issue.

• Automating the process of identifying all the programs for a set of known organizations

• Ongoing, in-field identification of informal, neighbourhood-level supports through a network of 120 micro-loan officers.

• Upgrading a membership list to include current address, website, and social media profile information

• Linking and syncing membership lists and survey data with socialsca.pe for improved discoverability and engagement
