And finally, we are saddened by the sudden
death of Anita Scott, MSN FNP-BC, an
instructor at Monroe Same-Day Clinic of
the Harris Health System. Our thoughts and
prayers remain with Ms. Scott’s family and
friends.
Sincerely,Roger Zoorob, MD, MPH, FAAFPRichard M. Kleberg, Sr. Professor & Chair
Note from the Chair
The 2019-2020 U.S. News & World Report annual list of top graduate
schools was recently released. Baylor College of Medicine was ranked
#4 in the nation for Primary Care overall, and #13 in Family Medicine.
The U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on medical student
GPA and MCAT scores, student selectivity, faculty to student ratio,
NIH funding for the medical school and grant dollars per investigator,
as well as a reputation component from surveys of medical school
deans, deans of academic affairs, heads of internal medicine, and
directors of admissions.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Dr. William Huang, Vice
Chair of Education, our faculty, staff and trainees for your engagement
with our students, and for your dedication to our mission. Your hard
work allowed us to achieve these impressive numbers.
The department’s annual Primary Care Update, held on March 23,
was a huge success. Each year PCU gains the attention of more and
more providers and allows us to showcase the strengths of Baylor
College of Medicine. Please check out pages 8 and 9 for more on
the event.
I have decided to forego the fourth quarter (April - June)
newsletter, and will instead share the department’s Annual
Report. Look for it during the first week of July. As always,
your feedback is welcome on this change and anything else
regarding our department’s publications.

FCM to complete pilot ABFM and STFM project
In 2018 the Department of Family and Community Medicine was selected to
be one of 33 sites nationwide to serve as a sponsor for the American Board
of Family Medicine (ABFM) and The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine
(STFM) pilot, Precepting Performance Improvement (PI). The initial joint
venture, recently completed, offered PI continuing certification credit (previ-
ously MOC Part IV) to ABFM diplomates who provide personal instruction,
training, and supervision to a medical student or resident and who participate
in a teaching improvement activity.
The PI program allows academic units (Sponsors) to develop and oversee the
completion of performance improvement projects that meet the ABFM Family
Medicine Certification requirements. Approved Sponsors are able to develop
and oversee PI projects for teaching physicians without having to submit an
application for each activity for ABFM review.
Forty-two Sponsors were originally selected to participate
through an application process.
During the pilot, which ran from April through December of
2018, Sponsors worked with preceptors to:
• Identify areas of teaching that needed improvement
• Create aims for improvement that included desired goals and
timeframes for achieving improvement
• Conduct interventions
• Measure improvement
To receive PI credit, preceptors also had to complete 180 1:1
teaching hours.

ABFM will be able to develop and oversee the completion of PI projects that meet the ABFM Family Medicine Certifi-
cation requirements.

HOMES CLINIC Receives $9,055 Grant
Houston Outreach Medicine, Education, and Social Services (HOMES) Clinic, a medical and pharmacy
student-led clinic dedicated to providing free medical care to the homeless of Houston, has earned a $9,055
AAFP Family Medicine Cares USA grant. The application was accompanied by letters of support from its
community partners, Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston and The Beacon. The funds will enhance the
ability of HOMES Clinic to care for the homeless by helping to purchase laboratory equipment for compre-
hensive patient care. The equipment will include a point-of-care hemoglobin A1c analyzer to aid in manage-
ment of diabetes and handheld spirometer for diagnosing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
HOMES Clinic is open on Sundays, a day when many laboratory services are unavailable for its underinsured
patients. “Most of the patients seen in HOMES Clinic sleep on the streets and have competing priorities,”
writes Dana Clark, MD, HOMES preceptor and Assistant Professor. “This makes it difficult for our patients
to be compliant with follow-up appointments for lab testing. The equipment provided by this grant will im-
prove the delivery of medical care and aid student education in many ways, especially their ability to counsel
patients in areas of prevention and treatment.”
The AAFP Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the American Academy of Family Physicians whose mis-
sion is to advance the values of Family Medicine through humanitarian, educational and scientific philan-
thropy dedicated to improving health. HOMES Clinic is one of many free health clinics nationwide that will
benefit from grants provided by a signature program of the American Academy of Family Physicians Foun-
dation called Family Medicine Cares USA.

S Opioid Use Disorder Training
The department’s Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) Training was on Febuary 2 from 8 AM to 12
PM. The entire training event was free of charge.
Participants learned from our experts on topics focusing on medication assisted treatment
and OUD treatment with buprenorphine/naloxone. Physicians require 8 hours of training to
apply to the Drug Enforcement Agency for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine, one of three
medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid use disorder. This 4-hour in
person training, in combination with a 4-hour online self-study portion, allowed participants
to obtain his/her buprenorphine waiver. These trainings also counted as the first 8 hours of
the 24-hour requirement for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.
Every time we take a course of antibiotics we don’t necessarily need, we’re
disrupting our own microbiome - as well as potentially contributing to
drug resistance. The Houston Chronicle interviewed Larissa Grigoryan,
MD, PhD and Barbara Trautner, MD about their recent survey.
Luis Rustveld, PhD, RD, LD spoke with

The documentary, entitled The Dark Side of the
Moon, explores the root causes of homelessness and
the challenges of street life, as well as societal biases and
prejudices towards homeless people, while discussing
possible solutions to this widespread and devastating
phenomenon.
The film also focuses on how a difficult upbringing,
amidst abuse and neglect, can have a devastating impact
on the cognitive and physical development of a child.
The documentary was submitted to national and
international film festivals and just received the official
selection laurel from the International Christian Film and
Music Festival in Orlando, Florida. The documentary
will also be used by the Coalition for the Homeless in
Houston for a variety of events and educational purposes,
and will be shown to BCM students in the Compassion
and the Art of Medicine course, directed by
JoAnna Fields-Gilmore, MD.
Congratulations to our own Fabrizia Faustinella, MD, PhD, FACP (right) who wrote, directed, and produced the film. Job
well done!
