Clunes Market 8 September 2019 Satch and a young fan

FREE ENTRY Next Market - Sunday 13th October Music will be by Anna Bilbrough &

Maryborough Highview College School Band

Weather conditions at the September Market were not going to be on our side with rain predicated

about 11.00am, but luck was with us and it held off until 12.45pm making a big difference with

a large supportive crowd.

With the added support from Wesley College and a great effort from the students with music and

a stall it made the day.

Thanks to Satch for keeping the music going until the rain did come. Thank you.

With the Makers Market in Collins Place supporting us it added a

great atmosphere in the town.

Thanks to the volunteers who helped both set and pack up and special mention to Clare Davis for her

efforts with the Teddy Bear Hunt.

The Wood Raffle was kindly donated by Deb & Syd at Misty Blue and lucky winner was Pat Lees of Clunes with Ticket No 18 which was drawn by

Chris O’Donnell from Red Door Gallery.

October raffle is kindly sponsored by Liz & Viktoria from Bower Birds.

With daylight saving started by next Market, a perfect spring day, it will bring out the stallholders

and lots of visitors to our beautiful Clunes.

Clunes Former Free Library By Phil Taig

The Mechanics Institute organisation originated in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1800 and as its popularity grew, spread throughout the British Empire. Melbourne Mechanics institute began in 1839, the first in Victoria, but changed its name to the Melbourne Athenaeum in 1873 and continues to this day. Following Victoria’s gold rush, Mechanics Institute halls sprang up throughout Victoria and at its peak about 1000 were in existence but only 562 remain today.

Like Melbourne Mechanics Institute, but in 1874, Clunes Mechanics Institute changed its name to Clunes Free Library as the Victorian government offered more financial support for Libraries.

Maintenance

As everyone will be aware, with the Spring weather the grass on the adjoining reserve (paddock ?) has had a growth spurt. Fortunately the Clunes Free Library has some good

friends, one of whom has a ride-on mower which was put to good use recently. Thanks Jack, the Committee of Management appreciates your support, and hopes you may volunteer again when the grass regrows. The Chairman of the COM is Graeme Johnstone and he may be contacted on 0427 534 532 or via e-mail at ‘[email protected]

Thank you Clunes By Michael Cheshire

Hello Clunes! How wonderful to be back in town getting my strength back after my sojourn in hospital for 3 months with a serious health problem.

I wish to thank you good people for your interest in my progress and good wishes for a speedy recovery.

Joy read out your emails and cards while I was still in hospital, which I know were a great help in my recovery. I was delighted at so many contacts with good wishes and I thank you all for this. It was just another showing of the caring and good will of Clunes as a whole.

Remember to give your family and loved ones a hug now - life can be very short!

Looking forward to seeing you down the street. Best wishes

Crime Wrap Up August to 15

September 2019

By Athol Chaffey

August • Series of Burglaries and Attempted Burglaries on various

businesses in Fraser Street linked to burglaries in Creswick on the same nights. Matter under investigation re possible suspects.

• Criminal Damage to a fence in Talbot Road. • Theft of a camper trailer from a residential premise. • Residential burglary in McDonalds Street area. • Theft of a motor vehicle from a business address in Fraser

Street, vehicle located in Dunach area burnt out.

September

• Further burglary on a Fraser Street business.

As you can see, cars and houses still being targeted for burgs, thefts and damages, opportunistic offenders stealing items from around town. Please make sure that your homes, sheds and cars are locked at all times, even if you are at home. All businesses advised to install some type of alarm system and/or CCTV.

Not sure if people noticed but there was an article in the Courier late last month where my new Manager introduced himself. Inspector Damien CHRISTENSEN has started at Bacchus Marsh and he is the Local Area Manager for the Moorabool, Golden Plains and Hepburn Shire areas. He has already increased the strength of a couple of the police stations in his response area. This is good news for me and the Clunes area, in that I will not be dragged away so much from my Clunes area to jobs in Creswick/Ballan/Gordon/Daylesford response areas, hopefully. So expect to see me around a lot more.

I was away overseas on holidays late August to mid September and saw that Clunes made the news in relation to the Burglaries on the Fraser St businesses. I was made aware of the news report that stated police from Bacchus Marsh cover Clunes, this is just plain incorrect, that statement was used by a member of the Victorian Parliament to further her own agenda. I have previously detailed the system of police coverage for our town whilst I am not working, I will re attach same for your perusal.

Taken from Newsletter in April 2017

Today’s newsletter article is a bit different, I have been asked as to why the police telephone diverts to Bacchus Marsh when I am off duty and not Ballarat or Maryborough, which are obviously closer. So in an attempt to dispel some of the inaccuracies, misunderstandings and untruths here is an explanation of the ‘system’.

Most importantly - Clunes has and will always have a 24 hour a day - 7 days a week Police Response, the same as every other square inch of the state.

For police purposes the state of Victoria is divided into 4 Regions. Metropolitan Melbourne, approx. 30–40 kms radius from Bourke Street, is split in half with North Western Region and South Eastern Region. The rest of the state is divided up the middle, roughly from Broadmeadows to Echuca and we have the last 2 Regions, being Eastern Region and our part of the world Western Region.

Western Region is then divided into 5 Divisions.

Divisions are then further divided into smaller areas called Police Service Areas (PSA), the PSA follow the boundaries of Local Government Areas (LGA). So we are stuck with the lines that some outdated surveyor drew on a map in the 1800’s, and as such we are within the Moorabool Police Service Area. In a nut shell, our lovely little town falls under

Western Region – Division 3 – Moorabool PSA – Clunes

Moorabool PSA is made up of all the police stations that are located within the Moorabool Shire (Bacchus Marsh, Ballan, and Gordon), Golden Plains Shire (Inverleigh, Bannockburn, Meredith, Rokewood, Smythesdale and Linton) and our Hepburn Shire (Trentham, Daylesford, Creswick and Clunes). The only 24 hour police station within the Moorabool PSA is Bacchus Marsh and as such is the supervisory station for all of the stations listed above, Clunes included. The other stations are all either 16 hour stations or 1 man stations (8 hour stations).

To add to the confusion the other PSA within Division 3 is Ballarat PSA

Western Region – Division 3 – Ballarat PSA and it is made up of stations within the Ballarat and Pyrenees Shires i.e. Ballarat, Ballarat North, Ballarat West, Buninyong, Learmonth, Beaufort, Lexton, Avoca and Landsborough.

Maryborough Police station is a 24 hour police station but is located within Western Region – Division 4. Although they are not responsible for my area they have at times come down the road and helped me out with jobs etc.

So, within all PSA’s, stations are clustered together, usually neighbouring stations. Clunes and Creswick are clustered together and as such we look after each other’s patch, i.e. if Creswick are not working I cover both Creswick and Clunes and vice versa.

My phone is diverted to Bacchus Marsh Police Station if I am on a day off, at court, at a job/task, interviewing a crook, in a meeting, dealing with a victim or other enquiry. I hope that clears up some of the confusion as to why my phone diverts to Bacchus Marsh as it MY supervisory station and the only 24 hour station within my area, meaning that there is always someone there to answer the phone. The Highway Patrol and Criminal Investigation Unit also operate out of Bacchus Marsh.

If you are the victim of a crime, including but not limited to, theft of your car, burglary of your house/shed, ANY family violence matters, assault, damage or theft of your belongings, suspect loiterers etc, etc

ALWAYS ring 000 (for urgent matters) or the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 (for non urgent matters) and the nearest police unit will attend to your needs, that may be me, or it may be a police officer from Creswick, Learmonth, Lexton, Daylesford, Ballarat etc. Police from outside the Moorabool PSA will attend to any emergency if they are the nearest police unit.

If you need to speak to me to organise to have some documents signed, seek advice for something, complain about your neighbour’s dog barking, organise something to do with your firearms licence or any other general enquiry or complaint, ring the Clunes Police Station and IF the phone is diverted to Bacchus Marsh leave a message for me to contact you and I will do my best to get back to you.

Clunes Crime Wrap Up continued

As you can imagine there are times when I am the nearest police unit to an incident, be it at Learmonth, Creswick, Daylesford, Lexton etc and as such I may be away from Clunes dealing with or helping other police units at those locations.

I know that the majority of the town support both me and Victoria Police and for that I am very thankful. Reducing crime is not the sole responsibility of Victoria Police, it is a community issue and if we work together we can make real inroads. I look forward to the commencement of the Clunes Community Neighbourhood Watch Coffee Group and its inaugural meeting. The rate of crime in our town is relatively small in numbers compared to Ballarat and larger towns, but I understand that being the victim of a crime is quite distressing and I do my very best to prevent crime in our lovely little town, because I too live here in sunny Clunes.

Hope that clears up some of the confusion.

Continuing to issue tickets in and around the town, speed, seat belts and mobile phone use, especially in the 60 km/h zones in Service Street, Victoria Street and Talbot Road. Also due to the high number of deaths so far this year, collision black spots have been identified around Clunes and I make no apologies for targeting these areas between now and Christmas. Also still catching the odd drink driver in the area; no excuse for drink driving.

I am going to try a new (for non metro stations) concept, on Friday the 19th of October; I invite you to come along to the Collins Place rotunda for the first inaugural ‘Coffee with the Clunes Copper’. I will be at the Rotunda from 10am till 11am for anyone to come along

for a chat, document signing or just to have a whinge. So grab a cup of brew from your favourite Clunes Café and I will see you at Collins Place. If even moderately successful I’m hoping to make it a monthly event.

Until next newsletter, look after each other and stay safe. As I always say I am YOUR local copper and can be contacted on station number 5345 3211, mobile number 0427 683 940, fax number 5345 3794 or email at [email protected]

If you need police attendance for an emergency situation ALWAYS rings 000.

Fuelling Creativity – Clunes Artist Group By Lana de Kort

Studies show that isolation can be a creativity killer. It’s one thing to have the space to create in peace, but quite another to be isolated from other artists who you might be able to share experiences with, or bounce ideas off. Local artists who formed the Clunes Artist Group so many years ago have often pondered this issue and earlier this year started meeting informally in the Lunchroom of Clunes Neighbourhood House in order to work on their own projects, in a shared space with other artists. Every Thursday from 1pm til 4pm the Clunes Artist Group has members and visitors pop in to work on mixed projects in a space that is light, air-conditioned (or heated – whatever is needed!) and spacious enough to spread out.

There are no costs associated with each session and no need to book in advance. If you are creative and feel like working in a shared space with others, why not come along? Everyone is welcome.

Clunes Football Netball Club By Chris McLennan

Well the season wrapped up in both football and netball with the last home and away game against Rokewood in early August. Unfortunately no finals participants this year.

Since the end of the season multiple events have already been had, with the Duck race returning on the Sunday after our final game. With a torrent of water

flowing, many conversations were had on the morning of the race about ‘how’ to make the event safe. With a big crowd building we eventually created a finish line near the ford but thanks to Matt, Pete, Lockie Wrigley and others, we were able to conduct the race. In record time of just over six minutes the race was over and complete. We had 2 local winners of second and third place and that made the members very happy to see the winnings shared back into the community. Given how rapid the flow of the creek was our Ducks weren’t all collected straight after the race. Thanks to Warren Anderson for keeping locals abreast of the situation and in due course they were collected. Thanks to everyone who came along to witness and participate in the event.

Junior presentations were well attended at the Stadium and thanks go to all our coaches and team managers for their efforts throughout the season. These volunteers do a fantastic job and put countless hours into preparations during the season. As we mentioned throughout the year our club is focused upon so many things outside of simply football and netball. We pride ourselves on being able to support foundations and have this year been involved in major fundraising for the MND foundation ($11,000 donated from our Big Freeze Day), White Ribbon event and Pink Day. Each year our club raises significant funds for much needed research and wishes to support these foundations that are looking for cures and we thank everyone who has supported these events throughout the year.

Our U/12’s coach Lindsay Pritchard was thrilled with his second season seeing numbers increase from 11 up to 20. Here’s hoping we see even more kids next season. The U/15’s best and fairest was won by Phil Volgrin, Congratulations to Nick Wrigley who won the U/18’s best and fairest in a very close count from Ricky Davies who finished runner up. In the junior netball The U/13a best and fairest winner was Ameka Meyers, 15’s best and fairest went to Jorja Bourke, U/17’s best and fairest winner was Tahlia Hodge.

The club will be looking for further help in the junior football section next season. We have identified the need to have a Junior Coordinator and we seek help from the Community in searching for the right candidate. If you know of someone looking to be involved in a proactive and progressive football club drop us a message to the club Facebook site or ring Chris McLennan on 0417 302 566.

The Reserves football winner was Glenn Handley finishing just in front of coach Christian Featherston. Senior winner was Brodie Lawford who secured the win from Matt Wrigley. Congratulations to Josh Thompson who won the players MVP award as voted by his peers. A Grade netball best and fairest winner was coach Madi Davis runner up Alysha Panozzo, B Grade winner was Tegan Collins with runner up Jaimee Matheson and C Grade joint winners Rhiannon Leahy and Georgia Kerr. In the CHFL league Best

and Fairests Tegan Collins finished Runner up in the B Grade netball count and Glenn Handley also Runner up in the CHFL Reserves best and Fairest. Our A grade netball coach Madi made the CHFL team of the Year. To these 3 players congratulations on outstanding seasons.

Major club awards were presented to Molly Bedwell for best club person. Molly coached U/17 netball, had her first year as treasurer, coordinated the Duck Race and was involved in other functions throughout the year. The Bull Millgate Service Award went to club administrator Warren Anderson. Wazz has for many years helped in football administration and is a passionate supporter of the club. Warrens contributions to the club over many seasons culminated in him being recognised for the Annual Award. Congratulations to these 2 tremendous volunteers.

The club then had a finals canteen to run at the City Oval and we had fantastic numbers arrive to support Michelle Stinchcombe. Whilst the weather wasn’t fantastic the club is very proud to see people come along and help out in support of a good fundraiser.

Also in August we saw our Senior Football Captain Lockie Wrigley win the Junior Clunes Person of the Year. Congratulations Lockie from the CFNC for all that you are involved in within the town.

In September the oval has been top dressed and new Santa Anna Couch planted to ensure a great playing surface for the cricketers in the season ahead. We hope this has the oval in great shape come around 1 next season. Again thanks to Shane Davies for all his efforts with the oval and pitch during cricket and football seasons.

Our Annual Pet Sheep Shearing Day will be on Friday 4th October and Saturday 5th October. Advertisements are on line and Facebook for all the details. The day will be held once again at Bushy and Andy Hills Shearing Shed. For more details contact Andy on 0400 342 656.

Congratulations Jesse Baird

Congratulations to former captain and dual best and fairest winner Jesse Baird on making the BFL team of the Year representing East Point Football Netball Club.

Jesse has had a great season playing mostly at Centre Half Back. On Saturday 21st September Jesse played for East Point against Sebastopol in the BFL grand final, East ending up victors 6.9.45 to 4.7.31. The win caps of a wonderful season for Jesse. The Clunes FNC is very proud of your achievements.

Vale Booktown Pioneers By Tess Brady & Linda Newitt

Marion’s Maze

Local Clunes resident, Marion Anderson, had a great understanding and love of the spiritual labyrinth and the fun of the maze. She put this to good use and created the Booktown hay bale maze which first appeared at the festival in 2012.

Marion was never daunted by the size of the task which involved hundreds of hay bales and each year designed a new maze for children to explore. The designs always arrived on time with the number of bales needed carefully calculated. Marion supervised the Wesley students in its construction.

It was so popular with the kids that they all but wrecked it the first day and we soon learnt to include maze supervision in the list of volunteer jobs.

The hay bale maze has become an icon of Clunes Booktown and has been copied by other events, even appearing as far afield as New Zealand’s Featherstone Booktown.

Creating the Booktown concept

Richard Booth was a British eccentric who spearheaded what has now become the global Booktown movement, with second-hand books introduced as the bedrock upon which to build and renew localised economies.

After opening his bookshop in Hay in the early 1960s Richard began buying up millions of books from libraries being closed across the US and shipping them to his village on the English-Welsh boarder, Hay-on-Wye. Many others soon followed his lead and Hay became known as the ’Town of books’. There are now 21 internationally recognised Booktowns, with Richard acknowledged as the honorary president of the organisation that now works to help spread the concept around the world.

On 1 April 1977 he declared the village an independent kingdom and named himself King Richard. He even dispensed royal titles on request (and on handover of a few shillings) – one of which was acquired for the Hon Barry Jones who spoke about his book A Thinking Reed at Clunes first Booktown For a Day Festival in 2007.

Clunes Golf Club By Ray Skinner

Considering we still have two Members recuperating from serious illnesses, others away on holidays and one of our gentlemen busy writing his Memoir, attendance at the Clunes Golf Club throughout August has been quite pleasing.

A number of Members have been busy completing projects inside the Clubhouse and around the Course in general. We have received a new purchase of sand from Pyramid Hill quarry for our sand-greens. At the time of writing this article some sterling work has been completed by Ian Rowland on all eighteen holes with Brendon Butler giving Ian some valuable assistance.

Work on the men's Clubroom toilet has progressed with Karson Osborne-Purser giving up a lot of his time to oversee the project which should be completed early September.

Hepburn Shire Council has been generous in providing the Club with a number of plastic bins (with lids) which are progressively being concreted into various positions around the Course to provide " all weather" storage for sand, allowing Members to repair divots where necessary on our fairways. Kevin Steart has taken this project in hand along with the general mowing around the Course.

Thanks to all of the above Members and also to those who assist in the many tasks needed to keep our Club running successfully. August results

Congratulations to Nick Hind for his break out season with the St. Kilda Football Club. After waiting several weeks Nick finally broke through debuting in Round 13 against Gold Coast Suns in Townsville.

The Clunes FNC wish to thank Nick for nominating Clunes as a home club having the clubs name listed on his locker. We have all enjoyed watching Nicks efforts for many years as he worked his way through football ranks from East Point to Keilor to Essendon in the VFL. Draft day 2018 culminated in Nicks name being read out as Pick #54 and his AFL dream commenced with the St. Kilda Football Club. Everyone at Clunes FNC has watched with great interest his journey in 2019. Plenty of Nicks highlights have been posted to our club Facebook but none more pleasing than watching him take 4 bounces on the MCG and finishing the play with a magic goal. The club is extremely proud of your efforts in your debut season in the AFL. May 2020 bring another amazing season and we all await plenty more highlights from Nick as his AFL journey continues.
