Notts Volunteers CelebrateAfter receiving an exciting invitation to attend the home of the Lord Lieutenant of Nottingham to celebrate the work of Nottinghamshire volunteers, a
group of Selston volunteers set off on the journey to Newark. The event was a carbon copy of The Queen's garden party (attended by June Heald BEM) but of course on a much smaller scale and with fewer people. It gave all volunteers the chance to meet potential funders and councillors from across the area. The gardens were open to the guests who were invited to wander at will. It was a beautiful day and was attended by representatives from Home Start, The Tin Hat Centre, Activity friends and Ashfield District Council who enjoyed an afternoon with the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire and his wife in recognition of work carried out in the voluntary sector.June Heald

'Well, the dam broke and when the water hit our house it floated away. Grandma got on the table and floated out safely.' 'How about you?' 'Me? I accompanied her on the piano.'

NEW TEAM AT BAGTHORPE ATHLETIC FCBagthorpe Athletic FC have a new under 8s team this season which was formed and managed by Dave Tring and assisted by Jim Cassidy with the help of local coaches Joe Andrews and Jake Maltby. Dave and Jim have high hopes for this side, having kicked off in the YEL Division 2 Saturday league, winning
all 3 of their opening games. These boys are the way forward at Bagthorpe, already attracting scouts from professional clubs. Being part of such a team promotes friendship, fitness, team work, confidence, hard work, patience and keeps the boys out of mischief!Bagthorpe have been invited back to a tournament in Los Alcazares in Murcia, Spain in June 2016, with both the new U8s and existing U13s teams attending. Jim was in Spain in October this year to finalise the trip. This will of course be an excellent opportunity for the players to see their international counterparts up close, and learn about their attitudes and beliefs on the great game. It is the management team’s aim to take all players for free to ensure no child misses out on this amazing trip and thus Dave and Jim would like to thank their sponsors D R Construction Limited, Dave Collins (Earthmovers), Felley Furnishings, Mackay Plant Hire Ltd, Vernon Maltby (skip hire) and many more for their continued help in this matter. We are always looking for sponsors so any business looking to advertise their business via advertising boards at the Bagthorpe ground should contact Jim on 01773 780072 or 07583 563505.

News from Jacksdale Primary and Nursery School
It was great to see all the children and adults come back to school suitably recharged and refreshed after the summer break. The first few weeks are always a little bit strange as everyone is getting used to the new classes and the children are settling back into the routines of school life. The teachers have had a little more to contend with this year as the Government introduced a new national curriculum and also removed the national assessment system of levels allowing schools more freedom on when and how children are assessed.
The children have certainly enjoyed being back at school having listened to some fabulous assemblies from Mina at St Mary’s as well as swimming in years 2 and 5, a Roald Dahl dress up day, harvest assembly, a red, white and blue day raising money for our servicemen and women not to mention a Halloween disco and football matches! There is always something going on at Jacksdale!
1CG all dressed as their favourite Roald Dahl character!
Nursery Places We currently have spaces in our amazing nursery for any children aged 3 and 4. We offer 15 hours free provision that can be taken as 5 mornings or afternoons. Parents may decide to opt for 2 ½ days either at the start or end of the week with the option of purchasing extra sessions at other times of the week. Please contact Mrs Byrom for more details.

Activity Friends Friday Night Dance GroupThis group goes from strength to strength and on 4th September they celebrated their 4th Anniversary with buffet dance which was attended by 59 dancers. The dancers were greeted with a sparkling wine and chocolates, the latter having been provided by June Heald who was celebrating her golden wedding anniversary. Following half an hour of social dancing, the dancers were treated to a superb buffet. There then followed a raffle and an elimination waltz with vouchers being presented to the winners. More social dancing followed until the finish at 9:00pm.
On Thursday 17th September 48 dancers travelled by coach to the Sheffield City Hall for their weekly tea dance. This really is a beautiful venue and the day was much enjoyed by everyone. On Friday 16th October we were entertained by a group of tap dancers from the E & N School of Dance who are based in Eastwood and Nuthall and are ably led by Jo Tinklin. This was a group of varying ages from the young to “a little bit older!” and their routines were really enjoyed by everyone. At the end of their session Jo invited our dancers to get up and have a go which proved that tap dancing is harder and more challenging than it looks.

Rock ‘n’ Soul Singers
As we approach Christmas, our efforts are turning towards expanding our repertoire of Christmas songs, both modern and traditional. We will be presenting our annual Christmas concert in Selston this year (See page 4).We have decided that for the coming year we will be raising money for the children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent. They have a ‘home from home’ in Wollaton, Billy’s House, where families with a child with cancer can access respite and support. We have asked
for our donations to go directly to help the work of Billy’s House. We’re sure that you will agree that this is a very worthwhile cause and will support our efforts to raise as much money as possible. We kick-started our fund-raising on Sat 17th October, when we gave a concert at Wollaton Village Hall - sadly not Wollaton Hall! This was well-attended with £200 being raised through the raffle and ticket sales. Please help us raise more money over the Christmas period by coming to one or more of our events:18th December - Underwood Gardening club 19th December – Selston Parish Hall21st December – Carol singing in Brinsley pubs 23rd December – Carol singing in Underwood pubsTickets for the Selston concert will be available from Dave (780192), Ro (719807) or any member of the choir whom you know. This term we have had a whole school culture week, exploring different countries around the world. Year 2 have focused on India and have become terrific investigators. We focused our enquiries on the famous landmark the Taj Mahal, we found some very interesting facts that we didn’t know. We discovered that the Taj Mahal took 22,000 workers over 21 years to build.
We made our own unique Menhdi patterns and also created Rangoli patterns using coloured chalks. We had a day exploring the food in India and their eating traditions. We discovered new foods and tastes and shared our opinions through completing food ratings.
We had an excellent experience participating in an Indian drumming session. At the end of the week, we even performed to our families.
We have also done some fundraising for the great charity ‘Help for Heroes.’ We celebrated being British with a ‘proud to be British’ day at school and baked some delicious scones. We have such fun at Westwood and take charge of our own learning by asking questions and using the internet and books to find the answers. Miss Lizzy Woodcock Year 2 Teacher

Selston Church of England Infant & Nursery School
Selston Church of England Infant & Nursery School offers a warm, personal and friendly family environment in which young children are happy and thrive. We have excellent links with St Helen’s Church and work closely with all the other schools in the area.
Through quality first teaching and a focus on children as unique individuals we continue to provide an outstanding education for all our children.
We value, model and encourage respectful and caring relationships which supports learning. Children are provided with the time, space and materials to play and learn, as well as offering them stimulating opportunities to investigate, explore, be active and think creatively. We have high expectations of our children in all areas of their development.
We offer a stimulating curriculum which is full of exciting topics to ensure children are immersed in their learning. Our curriculum is also enhanced by a residential visit for the year 2 children to Derbyshire, lots of educational day visits linked to our learning themes as well as many visitors to school.
Our children continue to make excellent academic progress and attain higher results than national figures at the end of the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.
Throughout the year, we hold a variety of after school sessions, including a discovery club, dance classes and a range of sporting activities. Our School also has a popular breakfast club from 7.30 in the morning.
We have an active parent group who offer a great deal of support to the school by planning fun filled events throughout the year to entertain our children and raise money for additional equipment to support learning and teaching
Selston Church of England Infant & Nursery School is a small school. Small schools are at the top of national performance, not least in low income and remote areas. The effective ingredient is the close partnership between parents and teachers. The children feel from the start safe and secure, that effort is worthwhile and achievement
possible. The evidence shows exactly that and the high quality of teaching, relationships and related achievement endures.
We are extremely proud of our school and the excellent early years education we provide. As always, please feel free to come and see us. Visitors are always welcome.
Jo Redfern & Alison Taylor
Christmas trees with baubles bright.Snow falling on a starlit night. There's a certain feeling in the air.People scurrying everywhere.Gifts to buy and cupboards to fill.'Tis the season of goodwill.
Excited children squeal with joy.Asking Santa for their favourite toy.Soon it will be Christmas morn. That special day Jesus Christ was born.So let us not forget that time.On Christmas day when church bells chime.Josie Rawson

Gardeners' Corner
Underwood and District Flower ClubSeptember 21st was a very exciting meeting as it was our competition night. All the flower arrangements had to depict a James Bond film title. We had some really clever interpretations from Goldfinger (of course) to Moonraker, Golden Eye and many more. 15 arrangements entered and the winner with the most votes was Mrs. Shirley Nettleship from Bagthorpe with her arrangement of Casino Royale.Second place Mrs. Sandra Hollingsworth with Moonraker. We completed the evening with a Plougmans meal. October 19th we had a lovely dinner at Denby Lodge.November 16th we watched a Christmas arrangement demonstration.
December 21 will be our Christmas party. It is to include a Christmas table decoration incorporating a candle and it will be followed by a faith supper. This brings to an end another very successful year for the flower club. I look forward to seeing old members again and we'd all love to welcome new members in 2016.Our meetings take place on the third Monday of every month stating at 7.00pm in Underwood Community Centre. For more information please call Mrs. Hilary Jackson, Secretary Tel 01159 382384.

The famous Christmas song Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer started life as a poem created by an American advertising executive called Robert May. He was requested to produce a poem that could be given away to children by Santa's helper employed by Department Stores at Christmas! It was commissioned by the Montgomery Ward department store who up to this time purchased third party colouring books to give away at Christmas. This idea was conceived as a cheaper "in-house" option! Johnny Marks decided to adapt May’s story into a song, which through the years has been recorded by
many artists. It was first sung commercially by Harry Brannon on New York City radio in the latter part of 1948 before Gene Autry recorded it formally in 1949, and it has since filtered into the popular consciousness.

SELSTON HIGH SCHOOL
PRESS RELEASE
CAREERS FAIR – OCTOBER 2015
On Tuesday October 20th Selston High School held its annual Careers Fair for students in years 9, 10 and 11.
The school hosted representatives from a variety of other local schools with sixth forms and local colleges of further education together with the Universities of Nottingham and Derby. There were also representatives from the Army, Royal Air Force and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue services. Students who were interested in vocational courses were also able to talk to Confetti, JTL, Positive Outcomes, DART Ltd, Strategic Training Solutions and the representative from Nottingham Futures. We have increased our exhibitors every year and aim to continue to do so in the future in order to prepare our students fully for the next stage in their education and training
Gail Turner Steps Down from District and County CouncilsGail Turner our local Independent Councillor has decided to step down from the District and County Council. Gail will however, continue to serve on the Parish Council. Gail has worked hard for Selston Parish for many years and her greatest battle was against the proposed landfill site at the Bentinck Void on the edge of Selston Parish. The Selston Area Residents Association (SARA) under the Chairmanship of Gail fought a long arduous fight lasting 10 years to ensure this did not happen. Gail and her hard working colleagues, there are too many names to mention, successfully prevented this area becoming blighted by landfill.Gail has worked tirelessly for the Parish. She has encouraged and helped local groups and clubs, including the very successful 'Activity Friends', to thrive and prosper. 'Community News' and 'Selston in Bloom' were helped by Gail's expertise, along with other local councillors, who also joined as committee members and have since moved on. We now have a beautiful war memorial as a lasting legacy for the Parish.
A lot of "Behind the Scenes" work in the Parish is not so obvious. New things appear: planters filled with flowers, street lights for Christmas, paths are cleared, side roads are gritted. Our Councillors are often not recognised in being instrumental in these happenings. We know Gail has worked hard at getting things done and has gained the reputation of being 'like a terrier with a bone who doesn't give up!' Gail will be missed, but she does plan to continue her support of local Independent Councillors standing for District and County seats.A huge thank you for all your hard work for Selston Parish Gail, whatever you choose to do next - may you be equally successful, fulfilled and happy.Val Barnett
