Getting Ready to Move or PCS?With the summer upon us, it is that time of year when our valued service members and their families transfer to another

duty station. Of course, we don’t want any of our families to leave so please keep in mind that Lincoln Military Housing has

communities across the country. You can view these homes at LincolnMilitary.com.

If you must go, however, here are a few tips to help you prepare for the move.

Once you have received orders, please stop in your district office to turn in your 30-day Notice to Vacate. At this time we will

schedule a pre-inspection and a final walk through. The pre-inspection is an opportunity for you to have a clear understanding of

expectations for the final inspection and take note of items you can correct to avoid damage charges.

Moving is a good time to dispose of unnecessary items and help avoid excess weight charges if your shipment is close to the

authorized weight allowance. If you plan to host a yard sale, please know your local guidlines for your area. We also ask that you

do not tape signage on our community light poles or stop signs.

If you have children, it’s important to find activites for them in the new area

before you leave. Activities like sports, 4H, church groups, scouts, art programs,

local recreation centers, dance classes and community events. School Liaison

Officers are a great resource to help your children feel connected before their

first day of school.

Maintenance TipDisposal & Dishwasher Cleaning

Scrape leftover food into the trash instead of rinsing dishes in the sink. Not only can you avoid one of the most cumbersome

parts of dishwashing, you can save about 55,000 gallons of water over the lifespan of your dishwasher. Scrape all dishes

thoroughly, and use a rough brush or dry sponge to get rid of pesky food particles that can clog drains.

When you do pre-rinse your dishes, use hot water to break down the food as it drains.

It’s important to frequently run the garbage disposal for about 30 seconds with the hot water running. This will assist with

proper draining of your dishwasher because it drains into the disposal side of your sink. To clean your disposal, use 1/2 vinegar

and 1/2 water to make ice cubes and run the disposal with the ice cubes for 30 seconds. The vinegar will clean and beakdown

any food build up.

You should try to only run a dishwasher cycle when your dishwasher is at full capacity. Waiting for a full load gets you the most

cleaning power and helps with energy conservation.

To get rid of odors inside your dishwasher, sprinkle baking soda on the inside of the dishwasher along the bottom of and run a

cycle without any dishes.

RECP TipThe Resident Energy Conservation Program is important to the nation and our armed forces. By encouraging and incentivizing

energy conservation for families living in privatized family housing, RECP can save energy and save you money.

Summer tips to conserve energy:

- On nice days, save electricity by turning off your game consoles, tv’s and computers and play outside.

- Close curtains and window blinds on sunny days so your air conditioner won’t have to work so hard.

- When air conditioner is running, be sure your windows and doors are kept closed.

- Use ceiling and pedestal fans. Fans allow you to raise your thermostat up to four degrees without any reduction in comfort,

according to the Department of Energy. Just make sure your ceiling fans are turning counterclockwise for summer and that

you don’t leave fans running in empty rooms. Fans don’t cool air — just people!

The funds saved by RECP will be used to improve your homes, playgrounds, community centers and, therefore, your quality of

life. In the long term, you will also be helping to improve the environment, preserve America’s natural resources and reduce

our dependence on foreign oil and other fossil fuels.

Energy Savings – Change out light bulbs from incandescent bulbs to energy saving LED bulbs.

Recycle- Includes all CLEANED plastic bottles and jars #1 thru #7: soft drink bottles, milk jugs, detergent bottles, FLATTENED

cartons, etc. Check the bottom of the container. If you see the recycling symbol with a #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 in the center, it is

acceptable. NOTE: Many areas are no longer accepting glass. If it is accepted, it usually includes:

Bottles and jars. Lids must be removed from the container and separated before being placed inside the container. All liquid and

food waste must be removed before being recycled.

Recycle or dispose of batteries and chemicals properly - hazardous waste cannot be placed in the trash or recycling bins. Visit

www.earth911.org and find local locations to recycle hazardous waste, batteries, etc. search by zip code.

Green Apps – Keep track of your carbon footprint, find recycling centers, and get daily tips and much more in the palm of your

hand. Check out Carbon Footprint Calculator App on Google Play and determine your CO2 footprint and how to reduce it. You

can also get CarbonTrack for iPhone on iTunes. You may also do a search with Google Play and iTunes to find the best app for

your lifestyle.

Earth friendly products – You can find green products at www.buygreen.com Buy durable instead of disposable products.

Donate/Reuse/Buy used items - Many times we get rid of perfectly working items. Give them a second chance and donate them,

buy them used or reuse them.
