St. Charles is the first hospital in Suffolk County to earn Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement Programs from The Joint Commission, an independent, nonprofit organization, which is the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.

St. Charles underwent a rigorous on site review by Joint Commission surveyors in December 2016 to earn this designation. The review focused on transitions of care from the pre-surgical orthopedic consultation to the intraoperative, hospitalization or ambulatory surgical centers admission, rehabilitation activities and follow-up visit with the orthopedic surgeon.

“As a leader in orthopedic care, St. Charles works to provide high-quality care for joint replacement patients across Long Island. We are honored to be the first with this new, advanced designation because it looks at every stage of care, including first contact at the orthopedic office, to surgery at the hospital, to follow-up and rehabilitation care after the patient has

returned home,” said Jim O’Connor, executive vice president/chief administrative officer, St. Charles Hospital.

According to The Joint Commission website, key characteristics of Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement programs include:

• Total hip and total knee patient care from the orthopedic consultation, preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative phases through to the orthopedic surgeon follow up visit, including all transitions that occur within each of those phases of care.

Inside This Issue:

Monday, February 27, was a very special day at St. Charles Hospital. 110 years ago that very day, a mission of compassionate care began when four Daughters of Wisdom accepted 27 homeless children with physical and developmental disabilities

into their care. It was the beginning of more than a century-long commitment of ensuring quality of life for each and every individual served.

There have been many changes in St. Charles since 1907. Last year, 1,500 babies were delivered, 25,000 patients were treated in the emergency department, more than 8,000 surgeries were performed, 12,000 patients were treated through the Specialty Clinic and therapists in the Rehabilitation program treated 1,100 individuals as inpatients and saw nearly 100,000 patient visits through the eight outpatient rehabilitation satellites across Long Island.

Despite the many changes over the past 110 years, there is one constant - and that is the compassion with which healthcare services are delivered here at St. Charles.

Each and every day I am humbled by the dedication, commitment and joy I see in the delivery of care on our units, in the OR, in the emergency department and throughout our rehabilitation network.

As we celebrated our 110th Anniversary, we were honored to host our very own Daughters of Wisdom, including Sr. Cathy Sheehan, the United States Provincial for the Daughters of Wisdom, and Sr. Ann Gray and Sr. Evelyn Eckhardt, former Provincials for the Daughters of Wisdom. Though the four Sisters who began our extraordinary institution have passed on, their mission continues and their spirit lives on through these dedicated women who serve today as Daughters of Wisdom.

To commemorate our founding Sisters, we created a beautiful video with still photos and actual video of the Sisters caring for the children in the early years. It is remarkable, humbling and uplifting and I urge you all to go to the link below to watch it. It reminds us of why we do the work we do and how blessed we are to do that work.

A Message From the Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer

St. Charles Introduces 3D Mammography to Advance Breast Care for WomenSt. Charles Hospital is now offering a new screening and diagnostic tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer—digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography.

St. Charles is offering 3D mammography as an optional add-on to a standard 2D mammography.

“Early studies conducted on 3D mammography have demonstrated an increase in overall breast cancer detection over 2D imaging alone, particularly invasive cancers,” said Anne Green, MD, director, Women’s Imaging, St. Charles Hospital. “With the additional information, there is potential to detect more cancers and reduce false positives.”

St. Charles has achieved its third consecutive three-year accreditation in Rehabilitation and its first specialty accreditation in Brain Injury Rehabilitation from CARF International, the global leader in rehabilitation accreditation. CARF accreditation represents the highest level of accreditation that can be given to an organization and shows St. Charles Rehabilitation’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards.

“At St. Charles, rehabilitation has been our mission for more than 110 years. It is an honor to be recognized for our continued commitment to high-quality rehabilitation and for focusing on a cutting-edge area, brain injury rehabilitation,” said Jennifer Semel, MD, medical director, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, St. Charles.

To earn the Brain Injury Specialty Program accreditation, St. Charles demonstrated that it utilizes current research and evidence to provide effective rehabilitation, supports future improvements by participating in brain injury research and has the commitment, capabilities,

and resources to maintain a specialized program for persons with acquired brain injury.

The current three-year accreditation in Rehabilitation recognizes St. Charles’ comprehensive integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Program, Pediatric Specialty Programs, Stroke Specialty Program and Outpatient Medical Rehabilitation for both adults and children. In addition, CARF commended St. Charles’ Fall Prevention and Home Safety Education Class for exemplary conformance to CARF standards.

St. Charles earned its initial three-year accreditation from CARF International in 2011 and is the first facility on Long Island to earn CARF accreditation for both the inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and stroke programs.

CARF International is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process and continuous improvement services that center on enhancing the lives of the persons served.

News Briefs

Three Long Island couples who emigrated to the U.S. from the same city in India, share the same last name, and who recently celebrated a joint baby shower, all gave birth at St. Charles Hospital on the same day, Sunday, March 26. Dana Brenner, MD, delivered all three babies, two girls and a boy, on what the families have dubbed their “Super Sunday.”

“Something was in the cake at the shower,” joked Maulik Patel, whose wife Rinku gave birth to 6lb., 6oz. baby girl, Siya, at 8:29p.m. on Sunday. Less than two hours before, Rinkal Patel and her husband Ketan had welcomed their first child, 6lb., 6oz. baby boy Swar, while at 11:15a.m. Janki Patel and her husband Tejas had welcomed a 6lb. 8oz. baby girl they named Swara.

Even more remarkable is that all three women delivered earlier than expected. Rinku and Janki both had the same due date of March 8, and both delivered 11 days earlier than expected. Rinkal had more than a month remaining when she delivered.

“It was really a coincidence,“ said Maulik, who arrived at St. Charles at 6:38a.m on Sunday morning. “Maybe half an hour after we got here, Tejas text messaged me to say, “We are coming to the hospital too.” Tejas and Janki were admitted at 10:20a.m., followed less than two hours later by Rinkal and Ketan.

Rinkal explained, “We got the message about Janki--that they were having a baby girl. But when we arrived at St. Charles, we learned that Rinku was also here.”

“We were next to each other in the labor and delivery rooms,” said Maulik.

A shared birth experience seemed fitting for these friends, who met while five of them

were employed at Brookhaven-based pharmaceutical company, Amneal Pharmaceuticals. They are not related and all six came to the United States from Ahmedabad, the largest city in Gujarat in western India.

Also, Bishop Barres holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Princeton University and a master’s in business administration (management) from New York University’s Graduate School of Business Administration.
