April 22 is a special day for promoting conservation and creating awareness about the earth’s resources.
June 5 is celebrated as World environment day.
Wildlife week is celebrated between October 1-7.
VAN MAHOTSAVA
This is a festival or a celebration of plantation of trees. It is an annual event where large scale tree plantation takes place all over the country.

CHIPKO MOVEMENT
In 1970s, an organized resistance to the destruction of forests spread throughout India. It came to be
known as Chipko Andolan.
“Embrace the trees and
Save them from being felled;
The property of our hills,
Save them from being looted”.
Sunderlal Bahuguna undertook a 5000km foot march to spread the Chipko message.
“Ecology is permanent economy”
Chipko Andolan drew worldwide attention . It inspired environmentalists both in India and abroad.
It made a substantial contribution to eco-ferminism, deep ecology, community based conservation and sustainable development.

This was started in 1986under the leadership of Medha Patkar. It aimed primarily to educate those
directly affected about the social and environmental impact of large development projects.
