United Way is making a Community Impact

Since 1923, the United Way of Greater Lafayette (UWGL) has channeled over $110 million into the community. The organization was created when a coalition of Lafayette residents banded together to raise $23,000 to fund nine agencies. Today United Way makes a positive impact by spearheading community change and raising funds to support 23 partner agencies.

According to James Taylor, Executive Director, the United Way of Greater Lafayette is moving in a bold, new direction focused on prevention. After helping millions of local residents for 85 years, were now taking a fresh, strategic approach, one that addresses the root causes of problems before lives are ruined and ripple effects are felt across our community, he explained.

The goal is to create lasting, measurable change not just for today but for generations to come.

Not only is prevention the right thing to do for people, it also makes smart economic sense, Taylor said. Research shows that for every dollar spent on prevention, a minimum of $7 is saved on intervention.

In addition to serving as a safety net, for the most distressed, United Way is

focusing its work and resources on Community Impact.

The Community Impact model steers resources to three key areas: Health & Wellness, Basic Needs & Financial Stability, and Children & Families. The model targets low-income citizens, such as a family of four earning less than $42,000 annually.

United Ways strengths come from the engagement of volunteers and staff as well as a strong mission, clear goals and growing data driven decision making. This ensures high standards are met and positive change is made.

UWGL is in a unique position to lead the community in creating new prevention- based solutions.

Change wont come overnight, Taylor explained. Moving the needle on complex issues will require steady, sustained focus over the next several years. Together we are changing lives and making Tippecanoe County a healthier, safer and more prosperous place to live.

1969 is an unforgettable yearPurdue University graduate Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, Woodstock concerts entertained thousands, Purdue mens basketball won the Big Ten title, and Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union (PEFCU) opened its doors for the first time in a small office on Purdues campus.

Despite the existence of other local financial institutions in the years preceding the formation of PEFCU, a group of Purdue employees recognized the need for a place where they, their colleagues and their families could save and borrow money safely and at a fair interest rate. From 18 founding members and seven charter members, PEFCU has grown to serve more than 57,000 members nationwide through exceptional local service, competitive deposit and loan products, and industry-leading services including mobile banking, online deposits and bill pay, paperless statements, generous rewards programs and much more.

Today when so many financial institutions are recovering from risky lending practices and a weakened economy, PEFCU stands strong because of its conservative policies and commitment to its original purpose people helping people. Its second-, third- and fourth-quarter 2008 membership satisfaction scores set record highs with an average score of 97.37 percent for the three quarters, illustrating its dedication to meeting its members needs.

And PEFCU is not alone. Credit unions received a satisfaction score of 84 out of 100higher than banks score of 75 on the recent American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI).* Credit unions are typically smaller than most banks, and their higher customer satisfaction follows a pattern in many industries where smaller organizations often offer better and more personalized service, according to ACSI.

The credit union difference is easy to see: Credit unions are safe. Deposits in federally chartered credit unions, including PEFCU, are insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) up to $250,000 through 2013, and are backed by the full faith of the federal government. PEFCU provides an additional $250,000 of coverage for membersdeposits through the Excess Share Insurance Corporation (ESI).

Credit unions are member-owned. Everyone with a credit union account is a member and owner of the credit union. PEFCU is governed by a nine- person volunteer board of directors and because there are no shareholders to pay, profits are given back to members through higher deposit rates, lower loan rates and advanced technology.

Credit unions operate in their members best interest. Federally chartered credit unions cap interest rates on loans and credit cards at 18 percent. The average interest rate for a standard fixed-rate credit card issued by a credit union was 11.75 percent versus 13.17 percent for a bank-issued card, according to a June 2008 NCUA survey. PEFCU offers a fixed-rate card with no annual fees, no default rates, no balance transfer fees, no cash advance fees and a combined credit/debit rewards program.

Credit unions are involved. Credit unions are non-profit organizations that make significant donations of money and time to their local communities. In 2008 PEFCU contributed $43,644 and 96 hours of volunteer time to the United Way and $50,000 to the Purdue Athletes Life Success(PALS) program. Other organizations that received contributions include the March of Dimes, Relay for Life, American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, YWCA, Feast of the Hunters Moon, local schools and various Purdue groups. PEFCU also gets involved by providing free financial literacy sessions in schools and organizations throughout the year.
