GREETINGS,

This community report acknowledges the generosity of our donors and contributors, members and patrons. With your help, we are able to offer meaningful opportunities for our treasured members and guests to engage with art, and we are grateful.

In 2015, many things changed in our community. Nashville remains an “it” city, a destination attractive to corporations, individuals, and families considering relocation, as well as domestic and international tourists. The face of Nashville is changing while current events simultaneously shine a light on the importance of better understanding the world’s cultures.

Our goal of helping visitors see the world in new ways is more relevant than ever. At the start of 2015, we hosted a symposium to celebrate Sanctity Pictured: The Art of the Dominican and Franciscan Orders in Renaissance Italy ; our award-winning exhibition brought to Nashville important examples from one of Western culture’s most influential periods. In the fall, we presented Ink, Silk, and Gold: Islamic Art from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which by examining three luxury materials expanded our knowledge about the historical reach and aesthetics of another culture and religion. Adjacent to Ink, Silk, and Gold, we presented twenty-six rare and exquisite drawings by the Italian master Michelangelo. These exhibitions taught us much about how artists address sacred and secular concerns. We were delighted to partner with Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art to present the work of Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. The year ended with Phantom Bodies: The Human Aura in Art. The third exhibition in a series dealing with powerful artistic statements that emanate from the body, it featured a remarkable roster of international artists.

A detailed account of the year’s exhibitions appears in this report. You will also learn about the many programs we offer on-site and in the community, which are designed by our educators to enhance an understanding of art, other cultures, and ourselves.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, I want to thank each of you for being a part of our mission and for your generous support of the Frist Center.

Sincerely,

Billy Frist

GREETINGS,

Thanks to the generosity of the donors acknowledged in this report, the Frist Center remains a treasured community resource, valued for its historic architecture as well as the world-class art, public programs, and opportunities for fellowship. The Frist Center is sustained not only by financial gifts but also by donations of time and talent.

We thank each of you for investing in the quality of life in Nashville by supporting the Frist Center. Our gratitude extends to trustees, sponsors, foundations, government agencies, members, community partners, visitors, and hardworking, loyal staff. For over one hundred years, Tennessee has been known as the Volunteer State because of the role played by volunteer soldiers. That tradition of selflessness extends to community service, and we

gratefully acknowledge the many hours of work by our volunteers, who help in myriad ways.

Countless hours are contributed by committee members to our two major annual fundraisers. The 2015 Frist Gala co-chairs, Debbie Best and Caroline McNeilly, marshaled a team of dedicated friends and colleagues who worked tirelessly to ensure the financial success of Gala events, including a patron dinner, in conjunction with the exhibition Houghton Hall: Portrait of an English Country House. We are also indebted to Crystal Churchwell and Caroline Berberich, co-chairs of the 2015 Art Deco Affair. Their committee of volunteers rallied to support this annual event, which raises funds for the ongoing maintenance of the building that houses the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.

In this report, you will read about the exhibitions and programs the Frist offered members and visitors throughout 2015. Without your help, they would not have been possible. With each story of a path changed, an idea revealed, or a window opened, we rededicate ourselves to providing Middle Tennessee with a place for visitors to see, learn, and interact with art.

We thank you again for your generosity and look forward to your continuing support. We pledge responsible stewardship and our full commitment to the mission of bringing great art to Nashville, serving the vision of using art to change the way people see their world.

We hope that when you visit the Frist, you find the experience you seek. Please join us as often as you can.

Sincerely,

Susan H. Edwards, PhDExecutive Director and CEO

As an institution devoted to presenting temporary exhibi-tions with works of art on loan from other museums, artists, galleries, and private collections, our lifeblood is in the maintenance of warm and mutually beneficial relationships and the development of strategic partner-ships. These partnerships begin at home. They may be as simple as matching the interests of donors and friends groups to exhibitions. And they may be complex, as was our partnership with Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art on Jaume Plensa: Human Landscape. In organizing this exhibition, Frist and Cheekwood direc-tors, curators, registrars, and educators worked closely together with the internationally renowned artist and his representatives at Galerie Lelong in New York to provide a remarkable installation at each venue.

Art museums bridge two worlds: we serve our audiences while participating in the global family of museums, in which the prevailing ethos is collegiality. This was seen in Houghton Hall: Portrait of an English Country House, which was organized and presented by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and traveled to San Francisco’s Legion of Honor Museum before coming to Nashville. All venues were in-volved in coordinating shipping and insurance of the artwork, and the first two museums on the tour generously shared their design concepts, educational programming ideas, and written interpretation with us, a courtesy that we in turn offer to venues showing exhibitions that we organize. The mutual gain was even more pronounced with Italian Style: Fashion since 1945. Our own Trinita Kennedy—a Renaissance expert, to be sure, but with an

abiding interest in Italy and the art of fashion—partnered with Victoria & Albert Museum curator Sonnet Stanfill to establish the exhibition’s floor plan, overall narrative, and interpretation. Frist Center designer Hans Schmitt-Matzen oversaw the creation of casework shared by the Frist Center, the Portland Art Museum, and the Minne-apolis Institute of Art. Our contribution of staff expertise benefited all parties while minimizing the duplication of out-of-pocket expenses.

Partnerships can take other forms as well. The exhibition Postcards of the Wiener Werkstätte brought together post-cards from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection, New York, and decorative art objects from The Wolfsonian–Florida International University, Miami Beach. The Wolfsonian works provided an invaluable context for understanding the postcards, which have been promised to Neue Galerie New York, a museum founded by Lauder’s brother, Ronald. Our curator Katie Delmez negotiated these loans and ensured that each lender was involved in the design and content of the exhibition.

One of our longstanding partners has been the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which has lent three major exhibitions to the Frist Center over the years. In 2015, Ink, Silk, and Gold: Islamic Art from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston showcased one of the oldest and most comprehensive collections in North America of art from the Islamic world. Trinita Kennedy drew on her extensive knowledge of Islamic art to collaborate with MFA curator Laura Weinstein in the creation of wall texts, label copy, and the gallery card. While the project was conceived in Boston, it truly became an exhibition through the work of our curatorial and design teams in Nashville, as well as our registrars, who tracked inventory, coordinated shipping, and handled other logisti-

cal concerns. The exhibition was enriched by three Food for Thought lunchtime discussions in our auditorium, featuring professors of different areas of Islamic studies in dialogue with our curators. Megan Robertson and Ginny Soenksen, our curators of interpretation, worked closely with Vanderbilt University’s Office of Commu-nity, Neighborhood, and Government Relations as well as individual faculty members from area universities in presenting panel discussions, lectures, and gallery talks on exhibition themes.

The opportunity to present drawings by the Italian Renais-sance virtuoso Michelangelo in partnership with the Phoenix Art Museum came with an unusual proviso: the drawings were from the artist’s family home in Florence, and the Italian government would permit them to be on display outside Italy for no more than 150 days. This meant that the Frist Center and the Phoenix Art Museum each could exhibit Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, Master-piece Drawings from the Casa Buonarroti for nine and a half weeks—half the usual time of our exhibitions. The museums worked together to ensure that we shared equal time with the master.

It is in working with living artists and their dealers and collectors that the spirit of collaboration is fully realized. In our 2015 Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery exhibitions, Tina Barney, Jaume Plensa, Shinique Smith, and their representatives were active in helping identify lenders, sharing content, and providing feedback on gallery design and interpretation. Artists, dealers, and collec-tors were extremely gracious in all phases of developing Phantom Bodies: The Human Aura in Art, from guarantee-ing the availability of certain works to reviewing written components such as object labels in a thoughtful fashion.

As the editor of the Phantom Bodies catalogue, curator Mark Scala extended the spirit of partnership by engagingas guest essayists Martha Buskirk, Eleanor Heartney, and Lisa Saltzman, all of whom helped readers—as well as Scala himself—see the works in the exhibition in new and often surprising ways. We continued our partnership of many years with Vanderbilt University Press, the distributor of the catalogue.

Effective collaboration involves mutual respect, an understanding of how each party’s interests will be met, and an emphasis on communication. While we forge such relationships outside our walls, the reality is that nothing is accomplished inside the Frist Center in isolation. The Exhibitions staff works closely with colleagues in Com-munications, Design, Development, Education, and Finance to bring transformative experiences to our audiences. This report provides an opportunity to thank all who make our work not only possible but immensely enjoyable.

Accolades for Sanctity Pictured

On May 11, 2015, the Association of Art Museum Curators announced its 2014 Awards for Excellence. Sanctity Pictured: The Art of the Dominican and Franciscan Orders in Renaissance Italy, which was open through January 25, 2015, was named the top exhibition by an institution with an operating budget between $4 million and $20 million, and the cata-logue received an honorable mention in the publications category.

On December 1, 2015, the Art Newspaper published a glowing review of the exhibition catalogue. Here is the opening paragraph of Christopher Colven’s essay:

To read the full review, visit theartnewspaper.com. The book, edited by Frist Center curator Trinita Kennedy, is available at the Frist Center Gift Shop while supplies last.

A number of commentators at this year’s Hay Festival posited the inevitability of e-books and other forms of technology soon overtaking the printed volumes that have until now filled our shelves. I have to say that no one in their right mind would want to do other than buck the trend to own and handle Sanctity Pictured: The Art of the Dominican and Franciscan Orders in Renaissance Italy. This beautifully produced catalogue was designed as a companion to an exhibition of the same name at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, Tennessee. The Frist’s director is surely correct in her view that this book “will have a life beyond the exhibition and become a key reference for anyone with an interest in the culture of the Italian Renaissance and the meaningful ways that art and religion intersect in the period.”

Tina Barney: The EuropeansJanuary 19–May 10, 2015 | Ingram Gallery

This exhibition presented works by the renowned American photographer Tina Barney from her series The Europeans, showing upper-class individuals and families in their homes, surrounded by artworks and other possessions that mark their privileged status. Taken in Austria, England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain between 1996 and 2004, Barney’s photographs inspire memories of a time when European elites represented the zenith of cultural sophistication and influence. Barney worked closely with her subjects to devise scenes and characterize relationships that are at once melancholic and endearing.

Tina Barney: The Europeans was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.

Houghton Hall: Portrait of an English Country HouseFebruary 13–May 10, 2015 | Ingram Gallery

One of England’s finest country estates, Houghton Hall was built in the early 1700s by Sir Robert Walpole, England’s first prime minister. This exhibition pre-sented more than 150 exquisite objects in vignettes that evoked the luxurious interior of the house. Highlights included furniture by the renowned designer William Kent, Sèvres porcelain, and Garrard silver, as well as family portraits by William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and John Singer Sargent. The collection and its installation celebrated the rarified taste and access to great artists and craftspeople enjoyed by eight generations of descendants of Walpole, including the current Marquess of Cholmondeley.

Houghton Hall: Portrait of an English Country House was organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in collaboration with Houghton Hall.

Telling Tales: Stories and Legends in 19th-Century American ArtFebruary 27–June 7, 2015 | Upper-Level Galleries

The paintings and sculptures from the collection of the New-York Historical Society con-tained narratives that provided insight into American cultural aspirations, social conflicts, and everyday life in the early to mid-nineteenth century. Among the many masterpieces in the exhibition were Eastman Johnson’s Negro Life at the South (1859) and William Sidney Mount’s Farmers Bargaining (1835; later known as Bargaining for a Horse).

Telling Tales: Stories and Legends in 19th-Century American Art was organized by the New-York Historical Society.

Exquisite NashvilleMarch 13–July 5, 2015 | Conte Community Arts Gallery

Participants of all ages at the Center for Refugees and Immigrants of Tennessee, Conexión Américas, the Edmondson Pike Branch of the Nashville Public Library, and Room in the Inn worked with Middle Tennessee teaching artists Kaaren Hirschowitz Engel, Sisavanh Houghton, Meghan O’Connor, and Jamaal Sheats to create artworks inspired by the Exquisite Corpse game, which was conceived in the 1920s by Surrealist artists and writers. In the spirit of the Exquisite Corpse, each participating organization initiated a work that traveled to the other three groups for their respective alterations. Additionally, each organization created two collaborative works without the involvement of the other organizations. The teaching artists also collaborated to create their own Exquisite Corpse. The resulting works blend individual and communal expressions to create highly imaginative reflections of Nashville’s various communities, from longtime residents to immigrants, refugees, and homeless individuals and families. Exquisite Nashville celebrates ideas of relationship, collaboration, and diversity.

Exquisite Nashville was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.

Italian Style: Fashion since 1945June 5–September 7, 2015 | Ingram Gallery

Italian Style: Fashion since 1945 chronicled the birth and growth of the Italian fashion industry from the post–World War II recovery years to the present day. This elegant exhibition showed the development of womenswear and menswear, highlighting key designers and the techniques, materials, and expertise for which Italy has become renowned. On view were over 90 garments and accessories by leading Italian fashion houses, including Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Missoni, Prada, Pucci, Valentino, and Versace, through to the next generation of talent, including couture by Giambattista Valli, bold ready-to-wear from Fausto Puglisi, and work from Valentino’s new designer duo Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli.

Italian Style: Fashion since 1945 was organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Jaume Plensa: Human LandscapeJune 5–September 7, 2015 | Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery

Jaume Plensa creates figurative sculptures from such materials as steel, bronze, alabaster, and synthetic resin. His subtle distortions of classically proportioned figures pose philosophical queries about the individual in shaping culture, coexisting with nature, and achieving spirituality. Three large works were installed in the Gordon CAP Gallery during the exhibition, and one monumental sculpture will remain on view outside the Frist Center through early 2017. Human Landscape was presented simultaneously at the Frist Center and Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art.

Postcards of the Wiener Werkstätte: Selections from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection with additional works from the collection of The Wolfsonian–Florida International University, Miami BeachJune 26–October 12, 2015 | Upper-Level Galleries

The Wiener Werkstätte (or Vienna Workshops), an association of artists and artisans founded in 1903 by members of the Vienna Secession movement, produced furniture, metalwork, textiles, and other high-quality wares. In 1907, the workshop initiated a line of postcards that was immediately popu-lar and would eventually include nearly a thousand designs. The cards were a way to advertise the products the firm created, as well as an inexpensive ve-hicle for sharing art with a large audience. The postcards and decorative arts objects in this exhibition brought to life the rich world of turn-of-the-century Vienna, including its cabarets and coffeehouses, historic sites, and elegant fashions, as well as beloved children’s stories and holiday traditions.

Postcards of the Wiener Werkstätte: Selections from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection was orga-nized by Neue Galerie New York, with additional loans from The Wolfsonian–Florida International University, Miami Beach.

The Spaces of the Wiener WerkstätteJune 26–October 12, 2015 | Upper-Level Galleries

This Education exhibition contained large-scale reproductions of photographs from the Wiener Werkstätte archive at the MAK (Museum für angewandte Kunst), the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. These images of workshop facilities, where objects ranging from silverware to printed silk were designed, produced, and sold, revealed the scope of this artistic enterprise and provided additional context to the exhibition Postcards of the Wiener Werkstätte. The Education Gallery also featured a reading area where visitors could explore books about the Wiener Werkstätte, its affiliated artists, and the postcard collections of Leonard Lauder in greater depth.

The Spaces of the Wiener Werkstätte was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.

Ink, Silk, and Gold: Islamic Art from the Museum of Fine Arts, BostonOctober 9, 2015–January 10, 2016 | Ingram Gallery

Ink, Silk, and Gold presented nearly one hundred works of Islamic art, spanning the eighth to the twenty-first centuries. Arranged chronologically and by region, the exhibition showcased artistic traditions from across the vast expanse of the Islamic world from Spain to Indonesia. Included were almost all forms of traditional media, including silver inlaid metal-work, Qur’an pages inscribed with gold, brocaded velvets, and luster ceramics. More than 130 years after the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, began collecting Islamic art, this exhibition marked the first time these objects were comprehensively studied, restored, and presented to the public.

Shinique Smith: Wonder and RainbowsOctober 9, 2015–January 10, 2016 | Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery

This selection of paintings and sculptures showed how New York–based artist Shinique Smith creatively integrates influences as diverse as dance, fashion, Eastern philosophies, graffiti, Japanese calligraphy, and poetry. Many of her works contain recycled objects, inspiring associations with past users while commenting on waste in American consumerist society. The artist’s early years of writing graffiti in Baltimore remain evident in her exuberant calligraphic strokes, which she uses to surround and animate her found materials.

Shinique Smith: Wonder and Rainbows was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.

Phantom Bodies: The Human Aura in ArtOctober 30, 2015–February 14, 2016 | Upper-Level Galleries

The third in a series of exhibitions about the human body in contemporary art organized by chief curator Mark Scala, Phantom Bodies included artworks that not only address themes of trauma and loss but also affirm the power of the human spirit as it endures beyond the physical. The title alludes to the phantom limb syndrome, a sensation that either is painful or conveys feelings of pres-ence in absence. Artists in the exhibition included Magdalena Abakanowicz, Christian Boltanski, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Adam Fuss, Ken Gonzales-Day, Alicia Henry, Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, Sally Mann, Teresa Margolles, Ana Mendieta, Shirin Neshat, Gerhard Richter, Doris Salcedo, and Bill Viola, among others.

Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, Masterpiece Drawings from the Casa BuonarrotiOctober 30, 2015–January 6, 2016 | Ingram Gallery

Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, Masterpiece Drawings from the Casa Buonarroti offered an intimate view into the mind of Michelangelo Buonarroti, a giant in the history of Western art. This selection of drawings attested to the versatile artist’s activities as a sculptor, painter, architect, and military engineer. Exhibition highlights included a large and deeply moving Madonna and Child and several studies related to Michelangelo’s ambitious but unrealized project for the façade of San Lorenzo in Florence, the Medici family burial church. The works, which ranged from rapid sketches to presentation drawings, all came from the Casa Buonarroti, Michelangelo’s family home in Florence, Italy.

Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, Masterpiece Drawings from the Casa Buonarroti was organized by the Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William & Mary in Virginia in partnership with Fondazione Casa Buonarroti and Associazione Culturale Metamorfosi.

Anthology: Visual Narratives from Nashville’s Print CommunityNovember 6, 2015–February 7, 2016 | Conte Community Arts Gallery

Nashville is a storytelling town, and this juried exhibition celebrated the use of printing techniques by small presses and individual artists to convey fascinating narratives in the form of graphic novels, illustrations, poetry, and other media. The judges were Katie Baldwin, assistant professor of book arts and print- making, University of Alabama in Huntsville; Liz Coleman, reference librarian and galleries coordinator, Nashville Public Library; and Mark Scala, chief cura-tor, Frist Center for the Visual Arts.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

The Education and Outreach Department staff constantly strives to make the Frist Center’s mission and vision a reality. Through online programs that reach thousands of viewers where they are, and one-on-one personal connec-tions made during workshops, programs, and conversations in the galleries, we invite participants to explore, discover, and make art using a variety of approaches appropriate to learners of all ages and abilities. In 2015, over 112,000 visi-tors enjoyed Frist Center education and outreach activities on-site, off-site, and online.

In February, ArtQuest ®: Art Is All Around You received its second Emmy®. This program, created in partnership with Nashville Public Television (NPT) and inspired by the Martin ArtQuest Gallery (MAQ), encourages children to wonder, create, and talk about art, both during visits to the Frist Center and beyond. The redesigned fristkids.org website

presents all 45 one-minute TV episodes with accompanying art activities designed for children, using materials easily found in their homes or neighborhoods. Resources for educators and parents are also linked to each episode. NPT aired the program 594 times and generated 2,900,000+ impressions (i.e., estimated number of viewers). NPT also distributed ArtQuest : Art Is All Around You to the entire state of Arkansas and to cities across the country, including Fargo, North Dakota; St. Louis, Missouri; and San Bernardino, California.

A highlight of the year was participating as one of sixteen art museums in the exhibition Museums: pARTners in Learning 2015, on view in Washington, DC, from May 6 through June 30, 2015. Organized by the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) and the US Department of Edu-cation, where it was on display, the exhibition showcased

the Frist Center’s work with Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School students on Stop. Take Notice!, a multiyear project that offered teens insight into art’s role in promot-ing social change and public awareness. The collabora-tive campaign to “make drivers and walkers think before acting” attracted local media attention, brought many visitors to the student-designed website, and concluded with a student-sponsored mayoral candidates’ forum on pedestrian safety.

Working with Next Steps, Vanderbilt University’s two-year nonresidential certification program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the Education staff designed an internship for Hardin Manhein. His final project was leading an architecture tour for 22 visitors. Following his graduation from Next Steps, Hardin was employed by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum as a guest relations specialist.

Experiential Learning activities encouraged educators, students, youth, and families to learn more about museum education and service and to explore the Frist’s programs. Responding to the focus on career exploration for young people, over 370 teachers and students participated on site visits or job-shadowing experiences. Students seeking a more in-depth experience collectively gave over 2,600

hours of service to the Frist Center as interns or volunteers. Students accepted as teaching assistants received small stipends.

Interns contributed to the curatorial, design, development, and education departments through meaningful, engaging projects that ranged from conducting research for exhibi-tions to assisting with various graphic design projects or outreach activities. In 2015, 25 interns represented the following universities and colleges: Alabama, Austin Peay, Belmont (6), Bowdoin, Georgia, Middle Tennessee State (3), Princeton, Sewanee, Tufts, Vanderbilt (6), Watkins Col-lege of Art, Design and Film (2), and Western Kentucky. Our teaching assistants were from San Diego State University and the University of Florida, and their training in museum education included hands-on teaching experiences and the creation of art activities and lesson plans.

Volunteers remain a core part of the Frist Center’s con-nection to the community. Over three hundred individuals devoted time and energy to different activities: support-ing MAQ, the Gift Shop, the Information Desk, and Coat Check; greeting all of our visitors; distributing audio tours; and welcoming guests at special events, such as member previews and Frist Fridays. Docents provided guided tours to visitors of all ages. In 2015, a new class of 12 docents

was recruited and trained, and 101 new volunteers joined the existing corps for a total contribution to the Frist Center of almost 24,000 hours of service.

The Frist Center’s ongoing support of Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) was visible in multiple areas. Frist staff members directly served the Academies of Nashville initiative as liaisons, mentors, and advocates for Hillwood High School’s Academy of Arts, Media, and De-sign. Collaborations with MNPS museum magnet schools John Early Middle Prep and Robert Churchwell Elementary, H. G. Hill Middle Prep, Hume-Fogg, and Nashville School of the Arts were part of Pencil Foundation partnerships. Staff also participated on Alignment Nashville’s elementary, middle, and high school teams, as well as on its operating board. A highlight of this year was responding to the H. G. Hill Middle Prep project-based learning activity inspired by Ink, Silk, and Gold: seventh-grade student teams researched and created their own exhibitions, which were then presented to Frist Center staff. These activities added up to more than 227 hours of service to MNPS during the course of the year.

Our ARTlabs offered teens (14–18 years of age) opportuni-ties to work with artists. During Summer Art Camp, partici-pants spent a week studying the works in Italian Style with a fashion designer and an illustrator. Young people from STARS’ Youth Overcoming Drug Abuse (YODA) program at Oasis Center and Nashville Public Library’s Studio NPL explored the history, science, and math of Islamic art in connection with Ink, Silk, and Gold. The culminating MAQ Attack held in the spring brought teens to the Frist for our Euro Glow Fest. The evening featured glow-in-the-dark European city murals, a DJ for dancing, and glow stick art activities. The event was planned by the Frist Center’s Teen Advisory Group, with support from Vanderbilt’s Office of Community, Neighborhood, and Government Relations, which sponsored the food.

Artful Tales, the Frist Center’s storytelling program, offered over 400 children ages 3 and up and their families stories related to exhibitions and hands-on art-making compo-nents. Free Family Festival Days highlighted Houghton Hall, Telling Tales, and Ink, Silk, and Gold and created opportuni-ties for 2,100 children and families to become better acquainted with our exhibitions through art-making activi-ties, interdisciplinary programs, and in-gallery activities.

Our outreach staff connects with service providers in the area to develop community engagement programs that thoughtfully cross the boundaries of age, economic, cultural, educational, and social divisions. Our three-tiered Community Partner program, initiated in 2012, allows or-ganizations to renew their commitment to the Frist Center each year. For 2015, 57 community institutions participated as Sustaining and Core Partners. The Frist works with these partners to expand artistic opportunities for their members through hands-on workshops and Art Trunks, mobile art-making kits that reached 1,180 participants through 58 organizations. An additional 29 organizations maintained Affinity Partnership status, collaborating with the Frist Center on an occasional basis. These partnerships were celebrated with the Community Partners’ art show in the Education Corridor in May.

During the summer, the Frist Center joined with the Oasis Center, Oasis Bike Workshop, and the Nashville Food Proj-ect to welcome and integrate approximately 20 teens and their families into Nashville through an art project located in Wedgewood Urban Gardens. Youth in Oasis Center’s ITOP (International Teen Outreach Program) worked along-side teaching artist Dan Furbish to conceptualize, design, and build a public art piece for the garden in celebration of the United Nations’ World Refugee Day on June 20. The young people were encouraged to utilize the project to express their memories of family and friends who have ex-perienced great strife in violent and war-torn countries. The

resulting installation complements the garden’s mission of encouraging lifelong friendships and stability among its participants as they share the bounty of the work they have done together.

The artwork of Shinique Smith and her exhibition Shinique Smith: Wonder and Rainbows led to Found Narratives, another community project. With the involvement of four teaching artists and an artist assistant, participants from four community partners created small three-dimensional and relief-based artworks from discarded objects to reflect their own histories. Smith’s assemblages of used clothing and everyday objects, which reflect her personal history as well as broader cultural concerns, prompted the partici-pants to see how belongings can inspire memories and come to shape experience and identity. Although specific artworks were based on individual narratives, finding connections among the participants through shared experi-ences was a desired outcome of the project. The organiza-tions were Maplewood High School, Poverty & the Arts, Thistle Farms, and YMCA Latino Achievers at Antioch High

School. Their individual and collaborative works will be on view in the Frist Center’s Conte Community Arts Gallery from June through September 2016.

The Frist Center makes available educational exhibition resources as enrichment for area school districts’ K–12 curricula. These include professional development op-portunities, such as in-service programs and exhibition-related workshops that support Common Core State Standards and address broad enduring cross-discipline themes. Frist Center educational resources are also utilized by homeschool groups throughout the area. As part of the Frist Center’s commitment to students, we provide free admission to all visitors 18 years of age and younger and offer assistance with transportation costs for school groups. In 2015, over 9,000 children visited us through the Teacher and School program of guided and self-guided tours. Responding to the challenges schools increasingly face in scheduling field trips, we piloted a distance-learning program with H. G. Hill Middle Prep, reaching students unable to travel to the Frist Center.

We were proud to host art shows for several school districts, including Franklin Special School District, Williamson County Schools, and Wilson County Schools, as well as the Mayor’s Art Show for MNPS. These shows allowed approximately 1,000 children to exhibit their work. Special receptions were held to honor the students and their teachers. More than 3,800 people attended these receptions in 2015.

The community engagement team reached approximately 1,200 people at fairs and festivals throughout the city, including Celebrate Nashville, the Cherry Blossom Festival, Miss Martha O’Bryan’s Ice Cream Crankin’, the National Down Syndrome Society Buddy Walk, Safe Haven Family Shelter’s Hike for the Homeless, and the fall Tennessee Craft fair. The team also participated in the MNPS Career Exploration Fair for ninth-grade students, the Nashville Children’s Theatre season opening, the Our Muslim Neigh-bor conference sponsored by the Faith and Culture Center,

the MNPS Career Exploration Fair for ninth-grade students, and the Tennessee Arts Academy.

Inviting all visitors to make meaningful connections with art is the goal of our interpretative material and programs. We develop them in a variety of formats to engage the interests of first-time guests, novices, repeat visitors, and experts.

The year began with the Sanctity Pictured: The Art of the Dominican and Franciscan Orders in Renaissance Italy pub-lic symposium. The daylong event brought 170 participants together with art historians from America and Europe. Curators, scholars, and experts also shared their insights into the exhibitions throughout the year through lectures. Presenters included Bailey Van Hook (professor of art history, School of Visual Arts, Virginia Tech, Telling Tales), Christine Gervais (associate curator of decorative arts and Rienzi, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Houghton Hall ), Sonnet Stanfill (curator of 20th-century and contemporary fashion, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Italian Style), Janis Staggs (associate director for curatorial and publica-tions, Neue Galerie, New York, Wiener Werkstätte), Laura Weinstein (Ananda Coomaraswamy Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Ink, Silk, and Gold ), Jochen Wierich (chief curator, Cheekwood Botani-cal Garden & Museum of Art, Jaume Plensa), Mark Scala (chief curator, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Jaume Plensa and Phantom Bodies), and Julian Brooks (curator, Depart-ment of Drawings, J. Paul Getty Museum, Michelangelo). Model Karen Elson and media professional Libby Callaway delivered a joint lecture titled “Stylish Cities: Fashion and a Sense of Place—from Milan to Nashville” during the run of Italian Style, and international journalist and author Sam Quinones gave a lecture titled “Crime and Remembrance: Stories from Mexico’s Druglands” in partnership with the Center for Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt University as part of our Phantom Bodies programming. Visitors heard

from artists Tina Barney and Shinique Smith during their exhibitions, and were treated to a conversation between the Marquess of Cholmondeley and Gary Tinterow, director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, during Houghton Hall. The Artists’ Forums paired Amanda Valentine with Mclaine Richardson, and Phillip Nappi with Susan Sherrick, to discuss their works in relation to Italian Style.

Accessible tours were offered to visitors through a partner-ship with Bridges, a Nashville-area nonprofit resource for deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing communities. American Sign Language interpreters were provided for docent- guided walk-up tours on the first Saturday of each month, as well as the architecture tours on those days. Multi-sensory tours designed for individuals with low vision benefited visitors of all abilities during Ink, Silk, and Gold. Making Memories, a program designed for senior citizens with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, continued in collabo-ration with the Middle Tennessee Alzheimer’s Association.

Our film series “Italian Style on Celluloid” brought 745 visitors to the Frist to view classics such as La Dolce Vita. We organized another series, “Our Hero: Daniel Day-Lewis and American History on Film,” that screened

during Telling Tales, and a food and film “whodunit” during Houghton Hall.

In partnership with Vanderbilt University’s Office of Com-munity, Neighborhood, and Government Relations, the 2015 Food for Thought program theme was “Ink, Silk, and Gold—Exploring the Historic Empires of the Islamic World through the Visual Arts and Culture,” a three-part series of lunchtime conversations presented by Vanderbilt professors, Frist Center curators, and other members of the Nashville community. By spotlighting distinct moments in history and geographic locations connected with the exhi-bition, the panel discussions provided over 400 community members opportunities to learn about the diversity and vibrancy of Islamic art and culture. Other programs for this exhibition were informed by an advisory group represent-ing various cultural organizations and universities in the community.

Workshops continued to offer unique access to our exhibi-tions. Over 470 people participated in a variety of hands-on workshops, including two cooking events presented in partnership with Conexión Américas’ Mesa Komal at Casa Azafrán—a global feast during Exquisite Nashville

and a five-course Middle Eastern meal during Ink, Silk, and Gold—and a coffee tasting led by CREMA, Coffee Roasters, which explored Viennese café culture during Postcards of the Wiener Werkstätte. Artistic inspiration flowed during studio workshops for drawing, hat making, needle felting, poetry writing, and printmaking. A three-part art history course delved into the career of Michelangelo during the exhibition of his drawings.

Two performance-based programs were offered. Nashville Shakespeare Festival actors performed dramatic and histori-cal readings in the gallery to bring paintings in Telling Tales to life. Music City Baroque and the Coffee Institute at the Center for Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt presented a program on the intersection of music and coffee in Vienna in support of Postcards of the Wiener Werkstätte. The program included a performance of J. S. Bach’s “Coffee Cantata.”

Audio guides remained extremely popular with Frist visitors. Frist Center staff wrote and produced guides for Houghton Hall; Italian Style; Ink, Silk, and Gold; and Phantom Bodies. Visitors to Houghton Hall could also access an interactive app that allowed them to see artworks in their original con-text, inside an eighteenth-century manor house. The Frist Center’s apps, hosted on the mobile platform TourSphere, also delivered exhibition content to our guests, including glossaries of art-related terms and a seek-and-find activity.

CONNECT

Social Media EngagementThrough a number of online outlets and social media plat-forms, the Frist Center continued to reach new audiences and foster a dialogue with its current community members. In 2015, the Frist Center reached 27,300 Facebook fans, 23,000 Twitter followers, 3,500 Instagram followers, and 2,500 Pinterest followers. The Frist Center began Periscop-ing events in 2015, and those live broadcasts reached 1,000 viewers.

Community Relations ProgramsThe goal of all community relations efforts is to engage diverse communities and create an environment in which they feel welcome and valued. Emblematic of this engage-ment is the Frist Center’s relationship with Southern Word—a nonprofit organization committed to providing youth, especially in underserved communities, with as

many opportunities as possible to develop and publicly present their voices both live and in print, video, audio, and digital media.

Since 2013, the Frist Center has hosted Southern Word on a number of occasions, and proudly hosts the South-ern Word Grand Slam semifinal. On these evenings, the region’s top youth poets, emcees, and spoken word artists compete for top lyrical honors and the chance to appear at the statewide finals.

College Night at the FristThe Frist Center continues to create programs to engage the area’s vibrant college community. Over the last several years, attendance by college students has grown steadily on Thursday and Friday evenings, when the Frist Center is open until 9:00 p.m. and students with college IDs are admitted free of charge.

Helping build this audience is the Frist Center’s College Advisory Committee. This year, the Frist Center recruited enthusiastic students to serve on the committee through a Facebook group, and in 2015, its members represented ten colleges and universities from Middle Tennessee and beyond. This year’s committee helped shape the annual College Night at the Frist. Held on Friday, October 9, this special event provided an opportunity for 200 students to experience an exclusive gallery tour with Gordon Con-temporary Artists Project Gallery artist Shinique Smith, listen to music in the Frist Center Café by soul-blues band Kat Milk Blu, explore henna body art with artist Miranda Crump, and attend a Curator’s Perspective talk on Ink, Silk, and Gold: Islamic Art from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Speakers BureauBefore the Frist Center opened its doors in 2001, its Speak-ers Bureau was already providing an array of interesting programs to business, church, civic, senior, and social orga-nizations. In 2015, Speakers Bureau presentations by staff, volunteers, and docents reached more than 1,000 people.

Senior MondaysOn the third Monday of each month, the Frist Center of-fers half-price admission, live music in the Grand Lobby, discounts in the Gift Shop, and special pricing in the Café to anyone willing to claim their “senior” status. Working with FiftyForward Senior Center, Music for Seniors, church groups, senior communities, and assisted living facilities, the Frist Center is proud to be a popular destination for seniors. featuring the “Changing Gears” Handbell Choir and a holiday sing-along with Sarah Martin McConnell, has become a cherished annual finale and fills the auditorium to capacity. In 2015, approximately 1,500 visitors attended our twelve Senior Mondays.

Affinity DaysOn Affinity Days, organized groups are welcomed at the Frist Center free of charge. We work with civic and nonprofit organizations, churches, businesses, and alumni groups to create these opportunities. In 2015, more than 1,400 visitors enjoyed free admission through our Affinity Day program.

Designed to remove barriers (including the oft-cited “I don’t have anyone to go with” rationale), the program draws many first-time visitors to the Frist Center. This year’s Affinity Days attracted participants from a wide variety of organizations, including Cummins Station; Empower TN (formerly the Center for Independent Living); Links, Incorporated; MDHA; the Music City Concierge Association; the Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce; the Tennessee Disability Coalition; Urbaanite.com; Westhaven; and WFSK-FM/Jazzy 88.

On the third Monday of each month, seniors enjoy special activities at the Frist Center, including musical entertainment by Snappy Pappy.

Co-chairs Debbie Best and Caroline McNeilly expertly re-created the look and feel of an English country home in the Turner Courtyard, employing chandeliers, a gorgeous array of pastel flowers, and floor-to-ceiling murals painted by local artist Lorne Quarles. After viewing the exhibition and enjoying cocktails in the Grand Lobby, guests dined on a delicate English-inspired meal.

The 2015 Frist Gala raised funds to support the Frist Center’s many educational and outreach programming initiatives. We continue to extend our thanks to Debbie Best and Caroline McNeilly, as well as the committee chairs and volunteers, for devoting their time and efforts to the Frist Center. We also thank the generous patrons, patron party hosts, members of the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Committees, gala attendees, and everyone else who contributed to this incredibly successful event.

AN ART DECO AFFAIR

The third annual Art Deco Affair, benefiting the care and maintenance of the Frist Center’s historic art deco building, drew 350 guests on Saturday, August 8. Partygoers dressed in black and white for the fête, which was inspired by Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball. Guests mingled in the Grand Lobby and enjoyed Bellinis while Hiptet, a jazz ensemble, filled the hall with lively music. Legato Gelato served treats from their popular cart while Catering by Suzette provided a delicious array of Italian specialties. We extend a special thank you to Caroline Berberich and Crystal Churchwell, the 2015 co-chairs (pictured above at left).
