"Let us worry about your commute"

Michael Ottinger, Corey Rogers, Viet Nguyen, David Owen

Michael Ottinger
adapted from "Target users" from proposal. Should we add images for 2nd/3rd bullet points, too?
Corey Rogers
removing this slide, using images for target users instead
Michael Ottinger
Will probably be switching this away from the bulleted slide format. 1 slide per bullet point?
Michael Ottinger
This is more or less a draft, so nothing is "final". If we want to change the layout, content, use PowerPoint instead, etc...that is definitely doable! It's divided into 7 parts (title is the first), per "Talk Breakdown" on the assignment page. And we need a tagline.

Traffic congestion is a problem all over the world!

Michael Ottinger
Followed by a few photos of traffic congestion in various places.Or, we could find a video/movie scene depicting stressful commutes too. (ie opening scene of "Office Space", http://tinyurl.com/a2xybdm)
Corey Rogers
rewatching that office space scene made me relive life on the beltway oh god

Delays affect transit riders, too!

How will we research our users?

Page 15: CommuteARoute

Past solutions

Page 16: CommuteARoute

Google Now

• Automatically learns commute route and times

• Automatic traffic notifications before/during/after commute

Google Now. http://www.google.com/landing/now/

Page 17: CommuteARoute

NextBus

Useful for public transit users, NextBus polls for the next arrivals for various transit systems across the US, including the University of Maryland

What is CommuteARoute?

Michael Ottinger
"Your proposed solution and what makes it unique", per "Talk Breakdown"
Page 19: CommuteARoute

Via maps and alerts, we utilize a wide variety of data sources to better inform

users of:

Transit info Accidents, Construction,

Delays

Crime and Safety Info

Washington D.C. Metro Map, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/wrctraffic/metromap/front.html

Madrid, Aaron: "Road Construction Ahead…and Behind…and Over There…", http://www.thinklafayette.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/road-construction2.jpg

Thompson, Isaiah: Crime Drop Varies By Neighborhood (2013), http://axisphilly.org/news/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/NBcrime-800x555.jpg

Corey Rogers
Transit:Data from transit agencies (such as Metro and MTA) provides live updates on rail and bus arrivals.Accidents, etc:data from various sources will not only inform the user directly, but also provide choices for alternate methods of transit.Crime/Safety:We can help choose a route that avoids streets with high risk of crime, or other hazards for pedestrians and cyclists.
Page 20: CommuteARoute

User data is used not only for one’s use, but helps inform others too!

• Tracking the user’s commute route and time is performed on the device by geolocation. This data is analyzed to suggest alternatives.

• We inform users of accidents, delays, and other adverse events via user-reported data.

Page 21: CommuteARoute

We help the user log how efficient their commute is.

Not only would the system compute average times of certain routes, but we would also allow for the user to log the costs of fuel and transit fares.

Michael Ottinger
(To right: example of interface allowing user to log/view fuel purchases)
Page 22: CommuteARoute

And we suggest alternatives to lower costs or travel time!

With the user's commute data, we can find options that could make their commute cheaper or faster. For instance, they might be able to take bus/rail, carpool, taxi, or in some cases walk or bike.
