PurposeThis document explains the process of installing a CommVault Client.

PrerequisitesBefore installing a CommVault Client, check that the following exist: Media Agent Server: It manages the transmission of data between the clients and the backup media.

CommServe or CommCell or Master Server: It communicates with all the clients and media agents. It also coordinates all media management operations such as backup, restore, copy. It is the central administration GUI for all backups.

File System iDataAgent: It performs the backup and restoration of the clients data.

Cluster SupportThe software can be installed on a cluster if clustering is supported by the above-mentioned operating systems. For information on supported cluster types, refer the following link:http://documentation.commvault.com/hds/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/english_us/features/clustering/support_cluster.htm.

Hard Drive Minimum 1.3 GB of hard disk space is required for the software. The recommended size is 1.5 GB.

An additional hard disk space of 1 GB is required for the growth of the log file.

Another 725 MB of temporary space is required for installations or upgrades. The temporary folder will reside in this space.

Minimum total hard disk space required is 3.25 GB. The recommended size is 4GB approximately.

MemoryBeyond the requirements of the operating system and running applications, minimum 32 MB RAM is required.

ProcessorAll Windows-compatible processors are supported.

PeripheralsDVD-ROM drive and Network Interface Card are required.

MiscellaneousThe computer should be connected to the network and TCP/IP services should be configured on the computer.

Installing the CommVault ClientTo install the CommVault Client follow the given steps:1. Run Setup.exe from Software Installation.2. Select the required language and click Next.

3. In the following window, select the option to install software on this computer. Please note that the options that appear on this screen depend on the computer in which the software is being installed.

4. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.

5. In the Select Platforms window, move down to Client Modules, Backup & Recovery and check the Windows File System iDataAgent.6. Click Next.

7. If you do not have a firewall, keep Configure firewall services unchecked and click Next.

8. Enter the CommServe server name or IP address and Click Next.

9. Enter client name on the following screen.

The client name is the name of the server on which you are installing the CommVault Client.If your server has multiple IP addresses, you can select those here.10. Click Next.

11. If Windows Firewall is enabled on the computer, the option given in the following screen is selected by default and must be enabled to proceed with the installation.

If you wish to configure other firewalls, select Add programs to the Windows Firewall Exclusion List.

After the installation, make sure to configure Windows Firewall to allow CommCell communication.

12. Change the drive path to C:\program files or verify the default location for software installation.13. Click Browse to change the default location.14. Click Next.

Points to Remember

Do not install the software to a mapped network drive. Do not use the given characters when specifying the destination path: / : * ? " < > | # It is recommended that you only use alphanumeric characters.

15. If you know the Client group, select it, else ignore and click Next.

16. Deselect Schedule Install of Automatic Updates and click Next.

17. Select Always use Global Filters and click Next.

18. Select the Storage Policy from the pull-down list according to the client, or ignore and click Next.Please note the storage policy varies as per the client.

19. The install program now starts copying the software to the computer. This step may take several minutes to complete.

20. Click Next.

22. Click Finish if the install completes successfully.

The new client will appear in your Commcell Console..

Configuring the Storage Policy and Scheduling the Client for Backup

configure The Storage PolicyA storage policy is automatically created when a device is configured. The storage policy acts as a channel through which data is transferred to the storage device.

As the name indicates, the storage policy allows you to establish a comprehensive set of storage parameterssuch as data retention, streams, de-duplication, etc., for the data channelled through the storage policy.

Configuring Storage Policy 1. From the CommCell Console, navigate to Client Computers ->Select the Client ->Expand File system -> Select Default BackupSet. 2. Right-click the default subclient and click Properties.

3. Click the Storage Device tab.

4. Click the Data Storage Policy tab.

5. From the Storage Policy list, click the name of a storage policy, and click OK.

Triggering Backup1. From the Commcell Console, select Client Computers.2. Select the Client -> Expand the File System Agent. 3. Right click the Default subclient and then select Backup.

4. Select the backup types according to the requirement and click OK to launch the backup.

Backup Monitoring1. From the Commcell Console, select the Job Manager.2. All the currently running jobs like backup, restore, firmware updates will show on Job Manager.3. Select the required client and check for the required details.
