dive in. get closer.

Como Friends is a nonpro!t organization thatpromotes, supports, preserves and enhancesComo Park Zoo and Conservatory.

Dear Como Friends Supporters:

As we look back on everything we accomplished at Como in2010, there’s one date on the calendar that rises above all others—June 3. On that red-letter day, Como Zoo unveiled Polar Bear Odyssey, the greatnew state-of-the-art habitat for Como’s twin bears, Neil and Buzz.

Five years in the planning, two years in construction, this exhibit has set a new standard for both animalcare and conservation education. Every day since its opening, Polar Bear Odyssey has been !lled withchildren, their faces pressed to the windows, watching Buzz roll in the dirt near the new digging pit, ortouching their small hands to Neil’s large paws as he turns somersaults in his new salt water pools.

Polar Bear Odyssey has provided a truly amazing window into the natural behaviors and nativeintelligence of this vulnerable species—but it’s also given the public an important glimpse of the greatthings to come at Como. In fact, Polar Bear Odyssey is only the !rst project in a thoughtful master planthat will transform Como over the next two decades, allowing us to welcome more than two millionannual visitors, and serve the needs of a 21st century audience in new and engaging ways. Next up willbe Gorilla Forest, an enlarged and dramatically improved new habitat for Como Zoo’s western lowlandgorillas. At the same time, the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory will soon break ground on The JapaneseGardens Experience, a new wing that will !nally give visitors what they’ve long wished for—year-rounddisplay space for Como’s beautiful and nationally-ranked Bonsai collection, and wonderful new accessto the Como Ordway Memorial Japanese Garden, Como’s most beloved exterior garden.

These improvements could be undertaken only because of the tremendous support provided by theindividuals, corporations, and foundations whose names appear in this annual report. Each of youcarries on a long tradition of community involvement at Como, which was created more than a centuryago by volunteers and visionaries who saw the need for a great public space where families could cometo renew their connections with nature–and with each other.

We thank you for everything you do to carry on this great mission, and for helping us to bring Como’swild and precious natural resources even closer to our visitors.

como zooImproving Como Zoo’s nearly 30-year-old polar bear exhibit has

been among Como Friends’ highest priorities, and 2010 sawthe realization of that dream—Polar Bear Odyssey.

After a two-year “vacation” in Detroit, polar bears Neil and Buzzreturned to St. Paul in March to discover an extreme home make-over that had more than quadrupled the size of their previoushabitat, providing natural substrate for digging, 120,000 gallonsof salt water for swimming, and engaging new education andclassroom space for visitors to learn about this vulnerablespecies. Opened to the public in June, this world-class habitat isnow the new standard for polar bear care, earning the top “threediamond ranking” from the conservation group Polar BearsInternational.

Polar Bear Odyssey was the most public improvement at ComoZoo this year–but it was just one of the critical projects that yourcontributions helped to fund. Support from Como Friendscontinued the shift toward operant conditioning training formore of the animals in Como’s care, while improving theenrichment resources that keep more than 1,200 animals healthyand curious. Como Friends’ growing sponsorship program alsopaired donors with the animals they care about most in Como’scollection, from penguins to Panamanian golden frogs to puf!ns.The strong partnership between Como Friends and the campus,

as well as a growing commitment to worldwide conservationprojects, helped Como Zoo to once again achieve the rigorousaccreditation standards set by the Association of Zoos andAquariums.

Grants secured by Como Friends made it possible for Como Zooand its professional keepers to take part in special projects thatcarry on Como’s century-long mission of conservation. In 2010,that funding allowed the Zoo to retro!t a special room for theWyoming Toad Project, an aggressive species repatriation planfor North America’s most critically endangered amphibian. It alsomade it possible for primate keeper Megan Elder to share herexpertise as the International Orangutan Studbook Keeper withexperts in Borneo and Sumatra !ghting to ensure the survival ofthreatened orangutans.

Recent updates to Como Zoo’s Primate Building were also madepossible through your investment in Como Friends, paving theway for even more improvements to come in Gorilla Forest, anew state-of-the-art habitat for the zoo’s western lowlandgorillas, breaking ground in 2011.

The Marjorie McNeely Conservatoryhas grown into one of the country’stop botanical collections, recognized

not only for the natural beauty of itsgardens, but also for the best practicehorticultural care that goes on behind the scenes.

In 2010, the Conservatory was chosen asan of!cial All-America Selections FlowerDisplay Garden—an honor reserved forfewer than 200 of the country’s leadingpublic gardens. Such recognition wouldnot be possible without the privatesupport that keeps the Conservatory’sdeep roots in our community growing strong.

Your investment in Como Friends providedthe funding for the 25,000 plants visitorssaw in !ve Sunken Garden shows—aComo tradition since 1925. Your supportalso paid for professional training forComo’s talented horticulturists, newspecies orchids for Como’s award-winning

collection, and more than 2 millionbene!cial bugs that provide sustainablepest control across Conservatory gardens.Como Friends’ new Sponsor-a-Gardenprogram also paired committed donorswith the collections they care about most, from the misty Fern Room collection, tothe economical plants of the NorthGarden, to the butter"y-friendlyEnchanted Garden.

Support from Como Friends also enabledthe Marjorie McNeely Conservatory toexpand Como’s Bonsai collection, rankedamong the top ten in North America. These hidden gems will soon be availableto visitors year-round in The JapaneseGardens Experience, the new wing andexterior terrace, set to break ground latein 2011.

educationInspiring our public to value the

presence of living things in our lives” isComo’s mission, and visitors see those

values in action every day in Como’sgrowing education programs. From freedaily keeper and gardener talks, to award-winning summer camps, to innovativepartnerships with area schools andeducators, Como’s education programsreached more than 450,000 children andadults in 2010.

For young children, Como provides a !rstpoint-of-entry to the wonders of thenatural world. For older students, Comofunctions as a living classroom where theycan see everything from rare orchids toendangered orangutans up close. As thelast completely free metro zoo andbotanical garden, schools and funders arerecognizing the growing role Como playsin this community as a non-traditionaldestination for STEM education, providing hands-on lessons about naturalscience and the environment, and

real-time conservation education toengage students on topics that rangefrom preserving endangered species tounderstanding climate change.

Your support of Como Friends made itpossible to provide scholarships for schoolgroups and summer camps, and tounderwrite the true costs of bringingoutreach programs to area libraries, reccenters, and schools reaching more than8,000 students in 2010. Your investmentalso allowed Como to expand its roster offree daily education programs to includetwice-daily polar bear trainingdemonstrations and “Creature Feature,” a new amphitheater offering thatentertained nearly 80,000 visitors in its!rst summer.

“I've beenwaiting myWHOLE LIFE to see the bird yard!”– overheard from Camp Como student, summer 2010

For !ve nights in October, Como Park Zoo andConservatory transformed into a furry andfairy-tailed wonderland, attracting more than

18,000 visitors to the 23rd annual ZooBoo–a 29percent increase in audience over the previous year.

Assembled each year by a team of more than 800volunteers who create everything from costumes tolighting effects, and community partners whodonate more than 180,000 items for treat bags, the event raised more than $83,000 for programsand projects at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in 2010.

Though ZooBoo is the longest-running fundraiser atComo, it was just one of a full calendar year ofspecial evenings and cultivation events ComoFriends sponsored in 2010 to share Como’s missionwith the community, and to show supporters PolarBear Odyssey, the !rst project created through thevision of a transformative new Master Plan. The just-opened exhibit inspired a Glacier Nights theme forthe 2010 Travelers Sunset Affair, inviting more than400 guests to enjoy an elegant, after-hoursexperience of the newly opened exhibit. In

December, another capacity crowd came to theMarjorie McNeely Conservatory to savor the !rstglimpse of the Holiday Flower Show in the SunkenGarden while sampling the fruits of global vintnersat the 7th annualBouquets, Como’s annualwine tasting event.

Como Friends is grateful tothe volunteers, sponsors, and donors who givegenerously of their time, talents and resources tomake these Special Eventsso successful. “Last year wasthe !rst time inover six yearswe missed ZooBoo. Ouryoungest complained all year.”– from a visitor comment card

The !rst project in a Master Plan that willtransform Como over the next two decades,Polar Bear Odyssey got great reviews from the

press and the public at its opening in June. In justthe !rst three months of operation, nearly a millionvisitors had a chance to see Como’s twin polar bears,up close and personal, in a state-of-the-art habitatthat is the model for future improvements across the campus.

The Campaign for Como, the $18.8 millionpublic/private partnership behind theseimprovements, was also well received by Como’scommunity of donors in 2010, who have committedmore than $16.9 million in capital gifts in spite of achallenging economy. This investment made itpossible for Como to complete Polar Bear Odysseyon budget and on time, while moving forward withplans to begin The Japanese Gardens Experience.

This long-planned improvement will create a newwing to the historic Marjorie McNeely Conservatorywhere visitors will be able to enjoy Como’s top-ranked Bonsai collection year-round. An outdoorterrace and improved pedestrian access will further

beautify the path that invites visitors to explore theComo Ordway Memorial Japanese Garden, Como’smost beloved and historic exterior garden.

Though much work remains for the all-volunteer effort to complete the $1.85 million infunding for the Campaign forComo, the surge in capital gifts in 2010 was an important sign ofComo’s enduring value, and thehigh return this communitytreasure gives to our community of two million visitors.
