Discreet Acoustics• Compact Series• Modular Series
For more than 50 years, AKG Acousticshas been the leading manufacturer ofmicrophones, headphones and acces-sories, as well as OEM and telecommuni-cation products. Our logo with the threecardioids stands for technical innovation, supreme quality, and excellent worldwidereputation.
Discreet Acoustics is synonymous tohighest requirements in the installedsound area. Key prerequisites for suc-cessful sound reinforcement productsinclude an especially rugged design (longlife and high fail safety), unfailingly highacoustic quality for optimum speech
reproduction, excellent electromagneticcompatibility and a wide range of acces-sories that will help you cope with themost difficult installation requirements. Most sound systems must be practicallyinvisible, easy to operate, and attractivelystyled. AKG meets each of these require-ments – and brilliantly at that.
The Discreet Acoustics Modular Seriesfeatures a flexible modular system of cap-sules and installation modules that can becombined any way you please. Every situ-ation has its individual needs that can beeasily fulfilled with the Discreet AcousticsModular Series. And there are numerous
new improvements and features that youwill not want to do without!
The Discreet Acoustics Compact Series isof the latest addition to the DiscreetAcoustics line. Based on the ModularSeries, the most frequently used combina-tions were pre-assembled into non-modu-lar units.
No matter whether you choose theModular Series or the Compact Series,AKG Discreet Acoustics products, createdwith the experience of a worldwide lead-ing audio manufacturer, will help you findthe optimum solution for any application.
Lecture hall of the Law School at the University of PennsylvaniaThe GN 30 E gooseneck and the CK 31 capsule were selected as the ideal combination, since thecardioid polar pattern of each CK 31 capsule ensures the ideal pickup angle for two students (totalcapacity: 72 students). All lines right up to the capsule are fully shielded to provide optimum immu-nity to electromagnetic interferences (e.g., from mobile phones). The hall was preserved in its originalVictorian style, with every two students sharing one permanently installed AKG microphone.
Düsseldorfer Landtag (Building of theDüsseldorf Land Parliament, Germany)Media technology is a crucial issue not only foreconomic experts, but also for politicians. TheDüsseldorfer Landtag building was equipped bySiemens Building Technologies with state-of-the-art sound systems and innovative media technolo-gy. For AKG, this project was a huge challenge.Within a very short time, over 500 microphones hadto be manufactured individually and integrated intoexisting components. “We implemented the projectwithin six months. This was made possible thanksto the perfect cooperation of all partners on theproject team. Customer satisfaction is excellent,”says Siemens project manager Jürgen Schaaff.
Norwegian Criminal Police HeadquartersThe hall of the Norwegian Police Headquartershas 160 seats, 84 of which are equipped withGN 30 goosenecks + CK 31 capsules mount-ed in an H 500 fixture. All microphones arecontrolled by eleven AS 8 automatic mixers.

With its new Discreet Acoustics CompactSeries (DAC), AKG offers a cost efficientalternative for installations where a leanbudget has top priority. This is why the DACSeries goosenecks come with only oneflexible section, a rigid connection betweengooseneck and capsule, and a 3-pin stan-dard XLR connector for joining the goose-neck to the cable.
The Discreet Acoustics Compact Seriesoffers a user-friendly system that fulfils itsbasic functions just perfectly. While anexcellent price-performance ratio was
achieved by focusing on essential features,no compromise was made with regard tothe sound of the capsules.
Each of these capsules provides the out-standing, “legendary” AKG sound thatenjoys worldwide popularity and accountsfor the company’s success. Acoustic excel-lence made in Austria by AKG!
You can choose between goosenecks 30or 50 cm (12 or 20 in.) long, with either acardioid or hypercardioid polar pattern, anda cardioid hanging module. For the tough
requirements of everyday usage, the DACSeries features rugged all-metal parts andis designed as a true plug-and-play solu-tion. Quick setup and takedown as well aspermanent installations all are possible.
The new Discreet Acoustics CompactSeries is the unique alternative for applica-tions where budget, not modularity, is amajor consideration. Moreover, theCompact Series can be combined with theModular Series, so that modules with addi-tional features can be used as well wherev-er they are actually needed.
Compact: The integrated capsuleA special feature of the new Discreet AcousticsCompact Series is that the gooseneck and micro-phone capsule form an inseparable unit. Therugged metal front grill is joined permanently tothe gooseneck, the contacts inside are soldered. This protects the delicate condenser capsuleagainst mechanical stress and electromagneticinterference, and ensures maximum reliability andexcellent audio.
Compact: The basisThe gooseneck foot features an XLR connectorwith gold-plated contacts, making connectingand mounting incredibly easy. The metal casealso houses the electronic components of themicrophone. The extra-strong flexible section letsyou position the microphone precisely asrequired.

The cardioid polar pattern is the mostpopular because its uses are almost limit-less. The 125° pickup angle is especiallysuited for inexperienced or very “viva-cious” talkers who often fail to talk direct-ly into the microphone.
The choice of two different lengths andthe flexible joint ensure optimum align-ment of the gooseneck to any talker posi-tion. Numerous options for installation areavailable, such as mounting on a stand ortabletop, while optional accessoriesinclude a lockable mounting fixture.

Easy setup: anything goesThe wide range of accessories ensures optimuminstallation or placing of the Discreet AcousticsCompact Series goosenecks, regardless of archi-tectural requirements.
Tabletop installation with a high level of structure-borne noise? Don’t worry; the installation mod-ules feature a shock mount made of a special rub-ber mix to reduce structure-borne noise to a min-imum. Optional theft-proof installation modulesare also available.
Fixing permanently on a thick marble slab thatmust not be pierced? No problem: just three shal-low holes will do to fasten the mount, and thegooseneck microphone won’t budge.
Permanent installation impossible? No big deal, aheavy base plate will keep the gooseneck secure-ly in place.
And what about uneven surfaces? Easy. Use thetripod table stand.

The hypercardioid polar pattern with itsnarrow 95° pickup angle is suited best forsituations where noise typically occursfrom all sides (particularly in worship cen-ters), where people talk into the micro-phone from a greater distance, or whereseveral talkers are grouped side by side.
Two different lengths are available. Theflexible joint ensures optimum alignmentof the gooseneck to any talker position.Several options are available for installa-tion, i.e., stand, tabletop installation, andlockable.

Choosing polar patterns
Selecting the correct polar pattern for installedsound is difficult since it depends on a varietyof factors.
Of course the acoustics of the room play a keyrole. For highly reverberant rooms such as wor-ship centers, a hypercardioid polar pattern willbe the best choice to avoid high levels ofunwanted noise.
Correct placement of the loudspeakers is alsoessential. If the speakers project right at thecapsule, a hypercardioid will be your best bet.
The most difficult task, however, is trying tojudge how the talkers will behave. For talkerswho are inexperienced or move around a lot, besure to choose a cardioid polar pattern for reli-able pickup; talkers at a greater distance fromthe mic will be served best by a hypercardioid.

XY stereo recording
Using two CHM 21 hanging microphones inan XY configuration (coincident pair) is agood way to make stereo recordings, particularly of choirs. However, soundsource locations are defined only by intensitydifferences. Adjusting the angle between themicrophones determines the width anddepth of the stereo image (see figure below).
ORTF stereo recording
Developed by the French BroadcastingAuthority, this technique differs from theXY technique by recording not only inten-sity differences, but also delay differences. The capsules are aligned at an angle ofprecisely 110° and 170 mm / 6.7 in. apart(see illustration below).

The Discreet Acoustics Modular Seriesfrom AKG Acoustics is being used world-wide and has proven its worth for manyyears. It brilliantly fulfils the three keyrequirements that are essential for soundsystem applications.
Modularity: Depending on the specificpurpose, “special wishes” can often befulfilled only by modular systems. TheAKG Discreet Acoustics Modular Seriesoffers a choice of five capsule moduleswith different polar patterns and frequen-cy responses. A wide range of goose-necks and installation modules is alsoavailable. Besides, there are special-pur-
pose modules for appications that are notcovered by any other products available. They can be used as wireless or lavaliermicrophones as well as for single-userapplications.
Reliability: A wide range of features mini-mizes the risk of operating errors, materialfatigue, or signal dropouts. The LED ringand self-cleaning gold-plated contacts forthe threaded connections are standard, asare anti-twist cables (HM 1000) and aswitchable bass rolloff filter.
Low profile: The extremely compactdesign and matte finish underscore the
inconspicuous appearance of theDiscreet Acoustics Modular Series. Thelow-profile installation modules ensurequick setup and takedown of all versionsof the Modular Series.
The excellent response and extremelygood intelligibility make the DiscreetAcoustics Modular Series the first choicewhenever quality and reliability have toppriority.
Small wonder that decision makers allover the world appreciate AKG as a pro-fessional partner.

DISCREET ACOUSTICS MODULAR SERIES
Added reliability: LED ringAll installation modules (except the LM 3) fea-ture an LED ring. A world first, it uses specialcircuitry to operate off standard phantompower. The LED ring has the following modes:
System standby:In this mode (factory default) the LED ringglows dimly to indicate that the system hasbeen wired correctly and phantom power is on.The operator will know at a glance whether thehardware has been installed correctly. There isno need to test each microphone.
Mic On:When powered from an external supply, theLED ring can be configured such that it will onlylight (brightly) when the microphone is on. (Allinstallation modules except for E versions andLM 3).
Off:If none of the above functions is desired, theLED ring can be deactivated. In this mode, it ispractically invisible (applies to all installationmodules).
System standby Mic On Off
www.akg.com 9
Added reliability: Protected against faultyoperationThe phantom power adapter contains twojumpers that let you activate a 200 Hz bassrolloff and the LED ring ON/OFF mode.
Since the jumpers are hidden inside theadapter case they cannot be realigned uninten-tionally.
Added reliability: Maximum contact areaThe size of the contact area between the micro-phone capsule and the gooseneck is of crucialimportance for the reliability of the entire installa-tion. Instead of the failure-prone conventionalpoint contacts, all Discreet Acoustics ModularSeries products use large, self-cleaning gold plat-ed contacts that engage in groove-and-tonguefashion.
In addition, a hard, rugged thread stabilizes thejoint. The extremely deep groove of the threadprevents misalignment and ensures a long usefullife of all Discreet Acoustics Modular Series prod-ucts even if they are used in installations that arefrequently reconfigured, or in mobile systems.
Added reliability: Tested for stabilityA high quality gooseneck bends precisely into thedesired shape and is resistant to inadvertentreadjustment. This stability of shape dependsentirely on consistent resilience of the springsinside the gooseneck.
Therefore, all Discreet Acoustics Modular SeriesGooseneck Modules are subjected to a rigorousquality test during which they are bent intoextreme shapes and must keep their shape untilbent again. Any gooseneck that does not passthis test is rejected.
Large self-cleaning gold platedcontacts that engage smoothly ensuresecure connection.
The deep groove ofthe thread preventsmisalignment of thecapsule.

For permanent screw-on installation, AKGoffers goosenecks in various lengths: GN15: approx. 15 cm (6 in.); GN 30: approx.30 cm (12 in.); GN 50: approx. 50 cm (20 in.). Except for the GN 30 oc withunterminated cable ends, all come with aDPA in-line XLR phantom power adapterwith integrated 200 Hz bass rolloff and LED
ON/OFF jumper. The DPA connects to anystandard mixer input with 9 to 52 V powersupply. The mini XLR connector will threadthrough any hole from 11 mm (0.44 in.) indiameter. This eliminates the need forlarge holes or awkward unsoldering andresoldering of the much larger phantompower adapter during installation.

Standard accessory: Phantom power adapter
The external phantom power adapter of the GNseries makes setting up the goosenecks mucheasier, since a small hole will suffice for thread-ing through a mini XLR connector. Having dis-connected the cable, the integrated bass cutcan be set quite easily inside the phantompower adapter. The phantom power adapter will operate offany available phantom power supply from 9 to52 V, powering both the condenser capsule andthe LED ring.

For permanent installation, a 3/8” screw ismounted from below. Two supplied rubberbuffers reduce structure-borne noise. Thescrew requires a 14 mm (0.6 in.) opening.
MF-DA Mounting flange
The MF-DA mounting flange is the DiscreetAcoustics Modular solution for situationswhere it is impractical to fix a gooseneck frombelow. The rugged, all-metal MF-DA can bescrewed on permanently and allows you toroute the cable above or below the tabletop.
This installation method is very popular foraltars and lecterns.

GN 15 (30, 50) E
Optimum suppression of structure-bornenoiseAn essential feature of the installation hardwaredescribed below is the attenuation of structure-borne noise that prevents the transmission ofunwanted noise (footfall etc.). The amount ofattenuation is determined by the material mix ofthe rubber shock mount. Modular Series installa-tion modules usea mixture that is extremely effi-cient at frequencies below 200 Hz (e.g., knockingnoise).
Unlike standard rubber mixturees (fig.1) thatrespond to vibrations very slowly, the special AKGrubber mixture (fig. 2) absorbs vibrations practi-cally immediately. This prevents successiveshocks from adding up.
This rubber mixture is used in the H 600 andH 500.
