CompactPCIGeneral and technical information

The CompactPCI bus is compatible with the PCI bus known from the PC world as far as the electrical specifications are concerned.The mechanical specifications were adapted to the commonly used Euro-board plug-in system in the 19” card rack. Therefore this bus is also suitable for industrial purposes.Previously unattained signal speeds supported by the layout technology developed by Hartmann Electronic guarantee more stability and reliability for assemblies operating in the limit range.

The backplanes manufactured by Hartmann Electronic are distinguished by a completely novel energy buffering feature which works across the entire frequency range.This feature guarantees improved reliability thanks to more stable supply voltages directly at the slot in conjunction with fluctuating loads.

Chassis GND connectionA continuous electrically conduc tive chassis GND surface is located in the area where the bus board is mounted on the card rack. An M3 screw connection is available to connect the chassis ground. By installing a connecting bracket or terminal bar, the chassis GND can be connected to GND in a low-resistance star arrangement.

JTAG connectorA separate 6-pin connector for JTAG boundary scan is imple mented on the backplane.Faster, simpler system initialization and testing by means of the JTAG bus even in the completely mounted state are achieved by direct access via an additional con nector on the back plane.

Utility connectorThe special signals to the power supply unit and external LEDs are routed to separate plug-in connec tors on the back planes. Depending on the backplane type, either a 10-pin or a 14-pin connector is used.

This design has a slot pitch of 4 units to implement a backplane with the most compact dimensions possible in 19“ card racks.

Power is supplied via screw connections and terminal bars.

Even rear I/O boards can be inserted in all slots.

Variants available: • 32-bit• 32-bit with rear I/O, with/without geographic addressing,• 64-bits (< 7 slots)• V(I/O) = 3.3 V or 5 V• 33 MHz/66 MHz (≤ 5 slots)

The extremely flat PCI to PCI bridge design permits seamless arrangements of cascaded backplanes without losing any slots.

Backplanes with more than 8 slots come with a PCI to PCI bridge.

In accordance with the specification, the 8-slot backplanes are equipped with on-board Schottky barrier diodes across from the system slot to guarantee optimal reliability and transfer characteristics. For this reason, the 8-slot backplane is 14 mm longer than the non-8-slot variants.

Even rear I/O boards can be inserted in all slots.

In accordance with the specification, the 8-slot backplanes are equipped with on-board Schottky barrier diodes across from the system slot to guarantee optimal reliability and transfer characteristics. For this reason, the 8-slot backplane is 14 mm longer than the non-8-slot variants.

Backplanes with more than 8 slots come with a PCI to PCI bridge.

The extremely flat PCI to PCI bridge design permits seamless arrangements of cascaded backplanes without losing any slots.

Electrical power supply by means of the P47 power plug-in connector.

To make the system assembly as easy as possible to configure, temperature sensors and connector terminals for fans are already integrated.A DIP switch facilitates selecting between two different characteristic temperature curves for each fan:ON: Reduced characteristic temperature curveOFF: Standard characteristic temperature curve For system assemblies with a fan slot, fan signals are also provided by a 14 pole plug.

Instrumentation Extensions to CompactPCI

PICMG 2.8 defines a pinout of the J2 connector for use in instrumentation systems based on CompactPCI.

The defined pins would be used to allow multiple modules to synchronize and precisely time the execution of their operations.

The instrumentation specification would use the allowance by the core CompactPCI specification for implementing other functions on J2 (rear panel I/O definition of J2 with sub-buses).

An important goal sought by this proposed committee is also to provide the highest degree of interoperability with standard CompactPCI products including those that implement the 64-bit pinout version of J2.

This design has a slot pitch of 4 units to implement a backplane with the most compact dimensions possible in 19“ card racks.

Power is supplied via screw connections and terminal bars.

Backplanes with more than 8 slots come with a PCI to PCI bridge.

The 8-slot backplanes are equipped with on-board Schottky barrier diodes across from the system slot to guarantee optimal reliability and transfer characteristics. For this reason, the 8-slot backplane is 14 mm longer than the non-8-slot variants.
