AGR/Q4603: Qualifications Pack for Companion Animal Groomer

Brief Job Description

A Companion Animal Groomer provides grooming to the pet animals, especially the dogs and cats. The individual looks after, feeds, makes the animal exercise and maintains hygiene and sanitation of their habitat. In case, the animal is unwell or injured, groomer provides basic first aid or takes the animal to the veterinarian. The person is responsible for the safety of self and the pets while working with them. The groomer also accompanies dogs and cats on journeys and shows.

Personal Attributes

A companion animal groomer should have empathy for the animals. They should be self-motivated, physically fit and be able to work for long hours.

Option 1: Whelping: The job holder is required to assist dogs and cats during the birthing process. The individual prepares the whelping box and whelping kit and maintains vigil.

Description

This unit is about carrying out grooming of the dogs and/or cats and the maintenance of their habitat. Scope This unit/task covers the following

Elements and Performance Criteria

Carry out grooming

To be competent, the user/ individual on the job must be able to: PC1. handle different categories of dogs and/or cats PC2. check the animal for any external wounds, injuries, secretions, etc. PC3. give first aid, or report to the veterinarian, if required PC4. remove ticks and skin irritants from the body PC5. massage the animal using hands and brush PC6. comb the coat and tail PC7. clean and mop the face, eyes, nostrils and ears PC8. brush the teeth and clip the nails PC9. express anal sacs in dogs PC10. bathe and dry the animal PC11. feed the animals as per the nutritional requirements PC12. use and maintain the grooming tools PC13. dispose off waste in an eco-friendly manner PC14. ensure recommended personal inoculation PC15. use the PPE

This unit is about preparing and taking pets out for medical treatment, journey and events. Scope

This unit/task covers the following

To be competent, the user/ individual on the job must be able to: PC1. check the pet for any wound/ injury/ infection/ secretions/ lameness/ discomfort, etc. PC2. check the temperature of the pet PC3. maintain the temperature record PC4. identify the symptoms of common diseases PC5. administer permissible first-aid, if required PC6. check whether any inoculation or veterinary review for the pet is due

This unit is about assisting a dog or cat during the birthing process. Scope This unit/task covers the following

Prepare for whelping

To be competent, the user/ individual on the job must be able to: PC1. identify the signs of whelping in dogs and cats PC2. prepare a whelping/ delivery box in a protected and calm place PC3. prepare a whelping/ delivery kit PC4. introduce the dog or cat to whelping/ delivery box PC5. calm the animal

Assist the pet during whelping

To be competent, the user/ individual on the job must be able to: PC6. maintain vigil and keep a tab on the time elapsed during labour PC7. inform the veterinarian, in case of delayed whelping PC8. remove and tag the puppies/ kittens as they arrive PC9. help puppies/ kittens suckle their mother PC10. report to the veterinarian or the senior about the completion of whelping PC11. remove the placenta and dispose off as per the procedure PC12. dispose off dead animals, if any, as per the procedure PC13. clean the mother and the new born PC14. take care of the young ones including the orphaned, if any PC15. assist the veterinarian in removal of dew claws of puppies

Assessment Guidelines and Assessment Weightage

Assessment Guidelines

1. Criteria for assessment for each Qualification Pack will be created by the Sector Skill Council. Each Performance Criteria (PC) will be assigned marks proportional to its importance in NOS. SSC will also lay down the proportion of marks for Theory and Skills Practical for each PC.

2. The assessment for the theory part will be based on the knowledge bank of questions created by the SSC.

3. Assessment will be conducted for all compulsory NOS, and where applicable, on the selected elective/optional set of NOS.

4. Individual assessment agencies will create unique question papers for the theory part for each candidate at each examination/training center (as per assessment criteria below).

5. Individual assessment agencies will create unique evaluations for skill practical for every student at each examination/ training center based on these criteria.

6. To pass the Qualification Pack assessment, every trainee should score a minimum of 70% of % aggregate marks to successfully clear the assessment.

7. In case of unsuccessful completion, the trainee may seek reassessment on the Qualification Pack.

Occupational Standards are applicable both in the Indian and global contexts.

Performance Criteria (PC) Performance Criteria (PC) are statements that together specify the standard of performance required when carrying out a task.

NOS are occupational standards which apply uniquely in the Indian

context.

Qualifications Pack (QP)

QP comprises the set of OS, together with the educational, training and other

criteria required to perform a job role. A QP is assigned a unique qualifications

Unit Code

Unit code is a unique identifier for an Occupational Standard, which is

denoted by an ‘N’

Unit Title

Unit title gives a clear overall statement about what the incumbent should

be able to do.

Description Description gives a short summary of the unit content. This would be helpful

they are looking for.

Core Skills/ Generic Skills

(GS)

Core skills or Generic Skills (GS) are a group of skills that are the key to

learning and working in today’s world. These skills are typically needed in any

work environment in today’s world. These skills are typically needed in any work environment. In the context of the OS, these include communication- related skills that are applicable to most job roles.

Electives

Electives are NOS/set of NOS that are identified by the sector as contributive to specialization in a job role. There may be multiple electives within a QP for each specialized job role. Trainees must select at least one elective for the

successful completion of a QP with Electives.

Options Options are NOS/set of NOS that are identified by the sector as additional

skills. There may be multiple options within a QP. It is not mandatory to

select any of the options to complete a QP with Options.
