Likewise, we continue with our regular line of R&D, providing new solutions to pre-existing products and working closely in new developments. PARAFLY, S.A. takes part in 100% of the existing projects of this sector in Spain. Within this section we consider important to highlight the capacity that PARAFLY, S.A. has proved as main contractor in the development and manufacture of an independent equipment such as the MK-24 torpedoes stabilizer and its associated fungibles elements. This development has allowed our company to become the exclusive manufacturer of this equipment and export it to the greater part of the NATO country members, sometimes directly and others through NAMSA.

INDUSTRIAL CAPACITY AEROSPACE SUBSECTOR EMERGENCY AND PARACHUTE TROOPS PARACHUTES

In this section, PARAFLY, S.A. produces the complete range of training and combat parachutes for parachute troops. We have our own training and combat parachute designs, among others, as well as its respective reserve equipments. These equipments had been the ones that have enhanced the strong raising of PARAFLY, S.A. in this sector.

Within this activity we can highlight that one of our own designs has been selected by the U.S. Defence Department to take part in the FCT program (Foreign Comparative Testing), for the ATPS project (Advanced Tactical Parachute System), which intends to develop a parachute that replaces the mythical T10. This fact has allowed us to continue with parallel projects of troop parachute development, which change radically the performance concept, with the objective of reducing the weight, increasing the reliability, easiness of folding, performance features, maintenance and length of life. This new parachute project will be ready to be introduced to the operative units at the end of the year 2000 or at the beginning of the year 2001.

PARACHUTES TO THROW CARGOES AND TO RECOVER RPV’S

In our great expansion process, PARAFLY, S.A. has initiated in 1998 the manufacture of larger parachutes, named G-11. This fact has allowed to include in our production engineering the most complex processes for the manufacture of this giant parachutes, thus closing the manufactured parachutes range from the most little one to the biggest one. In this sector and setting off from the research of a recovery parachute of unmanned vehicles, PARAFLY, S.A. has created an applicable, high performance, low volume, low weight, and variable configuration parachute for throwing cargoes, which allows the throwing of cargoes at high heights and deployments at low heights, with the advantages that this implies for the aircraft security and the accuracy of the charge supply.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT Within the aerospace sector, as well as the aforementioned equipments, PARAFLY, S.A. has had the need to develop and manufacture a series of products associated to the needs of these equipments, as well as product lines bound to this subsector but that differ from parachutes. HARNESSES MODERNIZATION FOR LAUNCH SEATS (MK-4, MK-6, MK-10)

Having in mind the supply punctual problems of the original supplier, PARAFLY, S.A. carried out a detailed study of the three different kinds of harnesses used n the different combat aircrafts of the Spanish Army. In this study several design defaults were discovered and a complete renovation of the MK-4 harnesses was made, improving compound qualities and correcting the found defaults. Additionally, a degradation test system for the harnesses when used in the different apparatus was established, allowing the verification of the actual length of life thereof and allowing its replacement in a due moment. This study allowed the parallel development by PARAFLY, S.A. initiative of a project that allowed the manufacture of a unique UNIVERSAL MODEL OF HARNESS, compatible with the three pre-existing types of seats at that moment. This project is ready for evaluation and testing by the respective entities.

ELECTRO-PYROTECHNIC Within the special equipments and as performance aid of some parachutes, PARAFLY, S.A. has developed a wide range of electro-pyrotechnic actuators adapted to each utility needs. An example of this are the pyrotechnic actuator screws, of different dimensions and charges to apply in any aeronautic utility. As an application for the performance by stages of some specific parachutes, PARAFLY, S.A., has cutters and pyrotechnic percuters of specific development for each utility. Likewise, we have developed the specific software for each case, which allow us to have the adaptation capacity of this equipment to concrete requests of any new possible development. SPECIAL EQUIPMENT FOR COMBAT PILOTS, HELICOPTERS AND CREW PARAFLY, S.A. has a wide specialized clothing range for combat helicopters pilots and crew among which we have to highlight the complete flight equipment from the EUROFIGHTER 2000. INDUSTRIAL CAPACITY SECURITY SUBSECTOR INDIVIDUAL SECURITY PERSONAL PROTECTION In this sector Parafly, S.A. has been working for 4 years in two special equipments to adapt them to the soldier of the future. MODULAR BALLISTIC PROTECTION VEST CERO TRAUMA

From the STRATUM BL-6 technology, we have developed a ballistic protection armour, which does not produce any rear deformation when a bullet impacts in it. That is to say, it causes what we call “TRAUMA 0”. With this armour a modular vest is being developed which allows to increase or to decrease the user protection level, depending on the missions that he has to accomplish. This will mean an optimization on the weight and user mobility ability in each case. In this project, a detailed study of the equipment that the combatant uses has been included, checking the possibility to include armour parts in the conventional equipment. Thus, the charge can be divided in a balanced way, reducing the tiredness factor.

SOFT HELMET The achieving of the “TRAUMA 0” armour has allowed the development of a flexible and lightweight ballistic protection helmet, which avoids a lot of the disadvantages of the current stiff helmet. The fact of no producing trauma allows to keep the head in contact with the helmet and fit it, making it more comfortable, avoiding the helmet movement due to the inertial moment. This SOFT HELMET, is a complementary item of the vest aforementioned, which we try to introduce as an equipment to evaluate so it takes part of the equipment for the soldier of the future. The aforementioned equipments are examples of developments carried out by Parafly, S.A. own initiative, and which show the innovation capacity and potential development in this sector. TORPEDO MK-46

PARAFLY won the tender for the manufacture and supply to the US NAVY of the stabilizers for the MK-46 air-launch torpedoes. The result was a success, producing a perfect product composed of parachutes, metalwork, composites etc...

An important success taking into account that the United States did not supply tools, production methods or quality programmes, to cite some of the difficulties. Nevertheless, the wide knowledge demonstrated by PARAFLY led the US NAVY to accept proposals to make modifications that benefitted its operation, our observations on the errors in the nomograms in the firing instruction charts surprised them and they were finally corrected. AIRBUS 380 (SMART NET) AIRBUS, after searching the market worldwide for a firm to give a technological solution to a problem in sector 19 of the tail, contacted PARAFLY S.A. and had the problem solved within a month, with a physical demonstration included. A specific product with Spanish technology and brand that equips the AIRBUS 380.

UAV-SIVA (INTA) PARAFLY won the tender to design and manufacture a recovery system for PARACHUTES and AIRBAGS. Fruit of this program is the attainment of certified equipment of demonstrated effectiveness. The totally innovative system means that the SIVA (Aerial Integrated Vigilance System) is the only operationally demonstrated ramp-launched UAV with parachute recovery without damage after more than 90 launches. It should be added that the weight and volume of the equipment is so advantageous that it has even been recognized by international competitors.

Within this program events have occurred that demonstrate part of PARAFLY’s technological profile.

At the start we had agreed with a French company, PIROMECA for the supply of the pyrotechnical actuators (cutters and strikers). When the moment arrived, said firm made blocking moves, increasing the prices and delivery dates to an unacceptable level. The move could have been intended to push us aside in favour of AUTOFLUG, a German company collaborating with DORNIER. In view of the danger of being removed from the program, a research team was formed with a pyrotechnical test bench. Within 6 months we had manufactured and had certified pyrotechnical cutters, strikers and charge-released screws to a maximum level of reliability (SPACE – MILITARY).

In addition, at the start the design intended that the wings would be retracted during the descent to avoid breaking, a vulnerable point in all parachute-recovered UAV’s. The strength of the evidence of the extremely high stability of the parachutes made this unnecessary. The aircraft descended with complete stability. To date, there has been no known incident involving the wings of the SIVA. All the foregoing justifies the interest of the Israeli industry (a world reference in UAV’s) for the SIVA recovery system, various companies having asked us for samples to install in their aircraft. In the light of this experience, PARAFLY’s management has adopted the philosophy that any new product has to be limited by TECHNOLOGICAL AUTONOMY, whether by fully guaranteed relationship contracts or when the point of departure of the technological limit is in the normal consumer market. Employing this policy, PARAFLY has been able to offer its products worldwide without the commercial impediments in the interest of other countries.

UAV DIANA (INTA) Recovery system for the high-speed aircraft, where the innovations, apart from its effective operation, are the reduced weight and volume. Taking advantage of the controlled deployment of the parachute, the floats are activated, eliminating the actuators and gas generators with the subsequent savings in both cost and weight.

UAV MILANO 950 KG (INTA) Emergency recovery system where the innovation is the aerodynamic profile and new materials that achieve a reduction in weight and volume. This very reliable system allowed INTA to commence experimental flights without the risk posed by the possible failure of systems still to be tested. MICROGRAVITY DROP TOWER (INTA) There is a problem during the deceleration of the capsule with its useful load and telemetric instrumentation. Logically, the onboard equipment is expensive and extremely sensitive. The known NASA and university systems have very high acceleration peaks. PARAFLY S.A. has developed a giant low acceleration buffer system, combining pneumatics, hydraulics and textiles, which is efficient and reliable even in the event of the total failure of the fixed buffer system. Proposal from PARAFLY to cushion the 9.5-ton escape capsule with no bouncing, taking advantage of the inertia of the detachment of the thermal panel with greater reliability and without the need for actuators or mechanisms. This technology is also derived from the SIVA project.

The contribution to this company has been extremely important. The design, manufacture and technical assistance for the entire range of parachutes for braking their 600 knot parachute-braked and anti-runway bombs. The design and manufacture of all the parachutes for mortar and howitzer illuminating projectiles. The continuous relationship with this client means that there is a constantly evolving collaboration in technical support and specialized assistance.

(EADS/CASA) The relationship with this client is relatively recent. Nevertheless, specific designs have been drawn up to make KITS for the training of dropping troops and loads. Furthermore, CASA acquires from PARAFLY all the parachutes for cargo drops, ringing cords and associated packing, as well as rescue and aircrew parachutes.

(URO) VEHÍCULOS ESPECIALES S.A. A study was made at the request of this company for the adaptation and configuration of a military vehicle for air drops – an essential requisite for the ratification of a vehicle of these characteristics.

The URO-VAMTAC, currently called REBECO, had to compete with the famous American HUMMER for equipping our armed forces. URO, specialising in vehicles, was handicapped by this requirement for air drops. PARAFLY collaborated with URO, building a test bed where vehicle parts were first adapted to support the difficult drop conditions and then designed the cradles and the dissipating platform for the impact. The actual test results were spectacular, with the vehicle dropped at speeds far exceeding airspeed limits whilst being completely assembled, with doors and windows. (HUMMER vehicles are dismantled for air drops). The impact with the ground was so adverse as to break all the slings on one side. Even so, the vehicle was undamaged, starting up and driving off once the battery was connected.

INDRA. There was a lack of detailed documentation on the cells that give the sensation of acceleration to pilots in the HARRIER simulators. PARAFLY was asked to cooperate and, after carrying out the corresponding study, came up with a satisfactory solution and equipped all the simulators manufactured for INDRA Spain and EE.UU.

Flight Mission Simulator GAMESA. Specific designs were drawn up for parachutes for the 155 mm illuminating projectile. Nevertheless, the most important contribution was the collaboration in detecting and solving a problem involving apparent failures of the parachutes that corresponded to associated metallurgical elements. S.C.R. (UAV)

PARAFLY has designed and manufactured the parachute systems for use with the ALBA UAVs used in Arenosillo (INTA) as an aerial target for the Army in Médano. Complex parachute designs have also been made for the high-speed aerial targets SCRAB I and SCRAB II made by the firm S.C.R., the latter having recently been validated by the Spanish Navy. Both also operate out of Arenosillo (INTA).

SPANISH NAVY. PARAFLY solved a problem for the supply of fungible spares for the MK-44 torpedoes of US origin. The supply of stabilizers for these air-launched torpedoes was cut off whilst the Navy still had hundreds of torpedoes that thus became inoperable. In three months PARAFLY developed a system industrially adapted for small quantities that served to maintain the torpedoes active until the arrival of the MK-46 torpedo. This program then extended to the Air Force for torpedoes launched from the P-3 ORION aircraft. NAMSA. Fruit of the development of the stabilizers for the aforementioned MK-44 torpedoes and with the same supply problem, many NATO countries, knowing of PARAFLY’s solution, acquired the complete launch KIT from the Greek Navy and Germany, Belgium, Turkey and Holland through NAMSA. A consequence of this relationship was the recognition and congratulations received from the NAMSA engineers association.

SPANISH AIR FORCE. In addition to the troops MC1-1C directional parachute, a solution and a program has been developed to revitalize the harnesses for the MIRAGE, F-1 and, currently the F-18 ejector seats. In addition to financial and time-factor solution, the program also includes the always VERIFIABLE guaranteed reliability on the life of the equipment.

SPANISH PARATROOPER BRIGADE. For the first time in Spain the G-11 cargo parachute has been manufactured, with a 1,000 m² surface area. The giant size of this parachute requires the highest level of design, cutting and productive methodology in this specialty. SPANISH NAVAL AIR FORCE. Three projects have been given different solutions to problems posed by this unit. a) Sonobuoys of Canadian and US origin that were out of date as far as thousands were concerned needed an estimate for their de-militarization. After contacting PARAFLY, the company, following long research, managed to offer a low-cost revitalization project. This solution has meant a saving of millions in foreign exchange as well as giving ecological benefits. This methodology has caused the original manufacturers to change the design in line with our project, to facilitate control and extend the useful life.

b) Certain helicopter repairs in ROTA required prior tests with very insecure ballast. PARAFLY designed and installed a species of high resistance harness interspersed with self-compensation hydraulic chambers. This permitted the helicopters to rise a few centimeters from the ground and perform the power and maneuvering trials without risk. c) PARAFLY was asked by the Chief of the Air Arm in ROTA to find a solution to the problem of helicopters grounded by an accident caused by the accidental opening of a chaff container (a radar echo countermeasure made of metalized fiberglass). In addition to being a health hazard for the crew, it could also be lethal because of the interference it could produce in the aircrafts’ electric and electronic equipment. Within two days PARAFLY had presented 10 prototype systems to impede this type of accident. Within a week the helicopters were flying using this system. SPANISH GUARDIA CIVIL PARAFLY has designed a new bullet-proof vest for the GAR (Rural Anti-terrorist Group) applying ballistic technologies in collaboration with the commanders of the GAR in Logroño. The resulting product has brought about a change in the operational, technological and aesthetic capacity with the manifest recognition of the GAR command. The result of its good design is apparent in the improvement of the Guardia Civil vests.

SPANISH MINISTRY OF DEFENCE. LA MARAÑOSA LABORATORY. This laboratory required the design of a complex parachute for integration in a system developed within a research program. The CERTIFIED demonstration prototypes have now been delivered. SPANISH MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (PRESTIGE) As a result of the “Prestige” catastrophe, PARAFLY developed and patented a system for the collection of residues from wrecks, whatever their depth. Apart from the low cost compared to other methods, is a very rapid system for isolating and collecting solid and liquid contaminants with a lower density than seawater. UNAM (AUTONOMOUS UNIVERSITY OF MEXICO). An agreement has been signed with the RECTOR of this university to give technological support to its lines of research into NANOTECHNOLOGY in the APPLIED PHYSICS LABORATORIES in Querétaro. KAFLOAT (INNOVAMAR).

PARAFLY, at the request of KAFLOAT following the recommendation of Navy admirals and SENNER, designed a viable system for their patent. KITS located on the sides of vessels for ejection and inflation to avoid sinking in the event of fire, ingresses of water, etc. This system has been CERTIFIED by the certification organization BUREAU VERITAS and recently approved by the MERCHANT MARINE.

MARINA BARCELONA 92. This important Mediterranean shipyard maintains luxury yachts and asked PARAFLY for a solution to optimize the isolation of the hulls of vessels from the rest of the craft. Three months after the request, a system has been developed that not only reduces the implementation time by 80% and the costs by 60%, but increases the working area due to the absence of scaffolding and obstacles and at the same time reduces the working time. Added value is given by its ecological benefits by removing the need for isolating films.

EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT There is currently a problem linked to contamination by maintenance yards when cleaning and painting the hulls of vessels. This operation, which is dirty but periodically essential, had considerable added value as advantage can be taken to perform an infinite number of maintenance and modernization tasks.

It is extremely important to devise methods that reduce or eliminate this source of contamination. PARAFLY and its solutions have been selected by various Catalan and Canary Islands shipyards and, with the collaboration of the CANARY ISLANDS INSTITUTE OF MARINE SCIENCES, are going to present an ambitious development program – initially to the Canary Islands shipyard “ASTICAN”.

AUTOMOBILE CUSHION CONTROL SYSTEM - ZEPO AMORTIGUADOR CONTROL DE AUTOMÓVILES - “ZACA” Currently, at the suggestion of the Guardia Civil, PARAFLY is developing a harmless and effective method for detaining vehicles that try to escape from a roadblock. At present there are different methods of dealing with cars that flee from controls, although on occasions they are ineffective and may even be hazardous to people. The “ZACA” system does not limit itself to making escape difficult by puncturing the tyres, but physically retains it without any risk to the occupants of the vehicle or to pedestrians or other drivers. The system patented by PARAFLY consists principally of four elements:

-A- PRINCIPAL RETAINING LINE, made of low elongation resistant material fitted with anchoring elements on soft “car tyre rubber” beds.

-B- DAMPERS, long stroke and low deceleration. -C- MOORING LINE, of high resistance and low elongation, with a universal anchoring and tensioning system. -D- INHIBITING BARRIER, permits or impedes, as appropriate, the retaining line to be activated by an actuating signal.

AIRBUS A350 BIRD STRIKE PROTECTION - “P.I.P.” At the request of AIRBUS, PARAFLY has developed a system to protect against high-speed bird strikes. The ultra-light system protects critical points of the aircraft in its different trajectories. The system has passed the energy absorption tests with a minimum of effect on the structure of the aircraft and has reacted satisfactorily to the high speed inertia tests. Its low weight and ease of installation mean that it can be fitted to aircraft in service with slight modifications.

BALLISTIC PROTECTION MULTIPURPOSE VEST.

The problem arose during operational missions in Afghanistan of this unit when it was obliged to use conventional bullet-proof jackets together with pocket vests. In addition it began to have problems with long distance snipers that obliged the use of very heavy vests that notably influenced operability. A research process began into both the ballistic protection panel and the ergonomic design and external configuration. This development involved the design and manufacture of prototypes that were evaluated on maneuvers and on overseas missions. This work ended with the acquirement of a product fully adapted to the necessities of the unit, allowing it to have equipment that eliminated the need to wear a pocket vest and with a considerable reduction in weight, increasing flexibility with a high degree of protection. The cataloguing process was also completed and the vests supplied to the total satisfaction of the unit, complying with the technical specifications.

SPANISH AIR FORCE E.Z.P.A.C (ALCANTARILLA) On knowing of the success of the ballistic vest made for the E.A.D.A., the sapper parachute unit contacted us to adapt this innovative equipment to their operational needs. The vests were acquired and they complied with all the technical and administrative requirements to the client’s satisfaction.

SPANISH AIR FORCE C.S.A.R. (MADRID) SPANISH ARMY F.A.M.E.T (MADRID) BALLISTIC PROTECTION MULTIPURPOSE VEST. With the need to incorporate a protective vest in the helicopters used by this service, we made a specific study to adapt the equipment to comply with the requirements of this unit. The limitations on the movement of the pilots and crews of these helicopters required a detailed process of adaptation and the preparation of multiple prototypes until an adequate one was achieved, which also allowed for the incorporation of all the rescue

equipment. The new jackets that were delivered complied fully with the technical requirements and the practical necessities of this unit.

SPANISH AIR FORCE 803 SQUADRON (ZARAGOZA) BALLISTIC PROTECTION MODULAR VEST. This commenced with the development of a modular protective vest and finished with the delivery of the equipment. On this occasion, in addition to the requirements of the equipment indicated above, we were asked to incorporate a modular system that would allow the user to decide what equipment to incorporate in the light of each mission (including autonomous respiration systems), as well as to adopt the level of protection elected in each case.

SPANISH ARMY TEST CENTRE IN TORREGORDA (CÁDIZ) COMPLETE ANTI-FRAGMENT PROTECTION KIT A complete protection kit was developed, comprising an anti-fragment suit and helmet, with more safety and mobility. In supplying this equipment, an innovative ballistic material was developed that was highly flexible and allowed us to cover a larger body surface including the trunk, neck, pelvis, arms and legs, without causing problems for the user when making any type of movement and providing a protection of 500 m/sec. with a reduced weight. One of the keys to understanding PARAFLY’s extensive capacity is that which in the 1980’s was bad, a small and versatile company, was sold in the 1990’s as a panacea for the ills of the military industry. When the crisis occurred at the beginning of the 1990’s, PARAFLY responded like an ideal DEFENCE company with its ability to adapt. This comprises of various static and dynamic laboratories where up to 80% of the dynamic tests can be performed on our products.
