If you have to tell a customer that youcan’t solve a problem with one of theirtrailers, they’ll assume that you won’tbe able to cope with their trucks either“

Steve Banner takes up the story

Knorr-Bremse Service CentreR & A Sott Auto Services Limited

The latest addition toKnorr-Bremse’s UK network,family-owned and run R & A ScottAuto Services has a strongcommercial vehicle heritage todraw on. Based on the HeaphamRoad Industrial Estate just outsideGainsborough in Lincolnshire, andtrading for over 30 years, it is anapproved MAN and ERF parts andservice dealership and will happilymaintain and repair cars, vans, buses, coaches and trailers as wellas trucks.

Managing director, Richard Scott, and his brother, Andrew started the business in 1976.“I was working as a commercial vehicle technician, I was about to be made redundant, so wedecided to set up on our own,” he recalls. His brother Andrew (now R & A Scott service director)was working at a Ford dealership and gave Richard a hand in the evenings. Six months later hejoined the firm full time and the two have worked together ever since.Today they are based at a 1.5 acre location divided into two. Across the road from the modern main premises, theother half of the site offers ample parking for vehicles brought in by customers.“We open the workshop from 7.30am until midnight on weekdays, and until 1.00pm on Saturdays,” says Richard.“We’ve got four double-length bays, giving us eight bays in effect, and we can carry out Class 4, Class 5L, andClass 7 MoTs.”Equipment includes a roller brake tester, a Beissbarth headlamp beam alignment system, a high lift, two-post5.0 tonne capacity lift, a 5.0 tonne capacity platform lift and sets of movable column lifts in addition to theinspection pits. “We can lift up to 28 tonnes,” he says.Technicians will go out to customers who need emergency assistance and will attend both day and night.Underlining the fact that R & A Scott is a family concern, its 24 employees include Richard’s son Gavin, who actsas company secretary, and Andy’s daughter Gemma.Between them they handle a mixed customer base including fleet operators as well as one-man-operations,“given where we’re based we look after a lot of people who haul animal feed,” says Richard - and regularlymaintain local authority vehicles.“One of our key clients is TransLinc,” he says. “As a consequence of this we look after a lot of community vehicles.”Recruiting technicians can be a real headache, a problem suffered by the entire industry. “Fortunately ours tend to be loyal, and we’ve got some who’ve been with us for over 20 years,” he says. “Werecognise that replacing them would be difficult so we’ve decided to grow our own talent and we’ve got anapprenticeship scheme.”There are two apprentices in the workshop plus one in the parts department.R & A Scott is heavily committed to ensuring that everybody is trained to the highest possible standard. “At the lastcount our eight technicians had completed 99 days this year,” he says.So why join forces with Knorr-Bremse? “We felt we needed to add another string to our bow,” he replies. With ABS and EBS now widespread – not to mention increased interest in ESP – it makes sense to forge directlinks with a major OE onboard systems and component supplier in order to obtain instant access to all thetechnical information needed to diagnose faults and repair them.As well as having the necessary tools and training – two of its technicians have attended four-day training coursesat Knorr-Bremse’s UK headquarters in Bristol – the firm carries stocks of genuine Knorr-Bremse parts and hasthem delivered regularly. In addition to using them in its own workshop it regularly supplies them to clients whohandle their own maintenance.Richard is convinced that today’s transport operators are looking for a one-stop shop.“If you have to tell a customer that you can’t solve a problem with one of their trailers, they’ll assume that youwon’t be able to cope with their trucks either,” he says. “And they’ll take all their business elsewhere.”

One of R & A Scott’s key customers, Lincoln-based TransLinc wasoriginally the transport department of Lincolnshire CountyCouncil. After a management buy-out almost ten years agohowever it has been an independently owned operationdelivering a wide range of services, almost exclusively to localauthorities.

Translinc provides vehicles - everything from mobilelibraries to gritters - under contract hire withmaintenance agreements, manages fleets andworkshops, offers an accident management service, services and repairs fleets under contract and runs avariety of transport-related training courses.“We’re also able to buy an authority’s vehicles andlease them back to the operator,” says TransLinc fleetengineer, Mick Walls. In addition it runs some 350 minibuses, midi-coachesand full-size coaches for a broad assortment of clientsincluding schools, colleges and children and adultswith special needs. “We operate CallConnect servicesfor Lincolnshire County Council that transport peopleliving in rural areas to stops on the nearest bus route,”he says. The passenger fleet includes Optare Solos. Optare is ofcourse one of Knorr-Bremse’s OE customers.Nor is TransLinc’s former owner its only client. Othersinclude West Lindsey District Council, and that iswhere R & A Scott has an important role to play.“We supply vehicles to West Lindsey and Scott’smanage them for us,” Mick says. “They look after anumber of our passenger-carrying vehicles too andwe have seven based at their site.“One of the big advantages of this arrangement isthat if a driver spots a defect – every vehicle has adefect book – then he can hand the keys in to Scott’sand they will sort it out promptly. They run a nightshift so there’s every chance that the fault will berectified ready for the vehicle to go out again the nextmorning.”That indicates considerable trust in Scott’s. After all, ifa dealer’s maintenance is slipshod and an operator ishauled before the Traffic Commissioner as aconsequence, then the operator will quickly discoverthat blaming the dealer is no defence. The TC willretort that the operator remains responsible because itis his ‘O’ licence and he failed to keep a close eye on

what the dealer was doing.“Our relationship with Scott’s started around 20 yearsago and that’s one of the longest arrangements we’vegot with a supplier,” Mick continues.“We’ve stuck with them because of the high standardof service they provide. They’ve also got an extremelygood relationship with West Lindsey.”Obviously TransLinc does not leave matters to chance. “We have systems and procedures in place to ensurethat third-party workshops do what they’re supposedto do,” he says. “For example, we receive copies of allof Scott’s statutory inspection sheets so we can seewhat’s been done to our vehicles.“Obviously they require authorisation from us if theyneeded to spend a lot of money on a job.”What does TransLinc look for from a company likeScott’s?“Efficient repairs carried out right first time, with theminimum of downtime and at a reasonable cost,”Mick says. “We also expect them to have their stafftrained so that they’re up to date with the latesttechnology, and that’s something R & A Scott is prettygood at doing.“What we’ve found with them is that they’ve got agood mix of employees, from younger technicianswith an in-depth knowledge of electronics anddiagnostics to old hands familiar with moretraditional repair techniques.”With over 500 employees, TransLinc does not confineits activities solely to its home territory. “As well as half a dozen sites around Lincolnshirewe’ve got depots in Macclesfield, Derby, Whitehaven,Trafford, Rotherham and Stockport,” he continues“Trafford, Rotherham and Stockport MetropolitanBorough Councils are all clients of ours.”So far as Stockport MBC is concerned TransLinc isresponsible for a 300-strong fleet. As well as cars, light commercials, and passenger carrying vehiclesthe line-up includes mobile platforms used to

maintain street lighting, road sweepers, 4x4s andtractors. When the authority took its waste managementactivities back in house TransLinc specified and supplied a fleet of 20 refuse collection vehicles. Under the original outsourcing deal TransLinc tookover Stockport’s vehicle workshop along with 15employees under a TUPE agreement. It replaced theworkshop with new premises and equipment andbrought in out-of-hours maintenance to ensure ahigh level of vehicle availability. It has also used its expertise to help Stockport becomemore environmentally-friendly; arranging for a fleet ofFord Transits powered by liquefied petroleum gas tobe supplied for instance.Originally built as the headquarters of coach builderSetra-Kassbohrer UK, TransLinc’s head office has alarge workshop with vehicle inspection pits, lifts, brake testing equipment and beam setters.“We can handle everything from a minor service to amajor engine rebuild,” Mick says. “During the summermonths we overhaul gritters ready for the winter.”“Our vehicles are in operation everywhere fromBournemouth to Sunderland, and all in all we’ve gotover 3,000 of them on our books,” says marketingmanager, Lee Coulson. “We can supply plant too –mowing machine or workshop equipment forinstance, not to mention anything you might need tomaintain a road.”“Although our passenger services vehicles are basedprimarily in Lincolnshire, we’re planning to expand toother areas,” he continues. “We already have apresence in Derby and Doncaster for example.”While determined not to neglect its public sectorroots, in future TransLinc aims to expand into theprivate sector, including the large utilities.“That has to be the next step,” he says.

It’s hard to believe, but Knorr-Bremse has been selling Trailer EBS for seven years!During that time over 200,000 trailers have been fitted with it - where on earth that numberof trailers go is anybody’s guess - but what is without doubt is just how much progressKnorr-Bremse has made in the trailer sector and how it has become the first choice system ofthe major fleets.

with easier installation due to fewer components andwe have the new industry standard for Trailer EBS.For instance, we have added more options to the RollStability Program – it was always good, but now wecan tailor it exactly to your trailer type, i.e. wheelbase, axle position, etc., ensuring optimum performanceand safety at all times. We have also increased the number of auxiliaryoptions, including a pneumatic port 2.8 that you canprogram to supply air pressure at a chosen speed ortime in exactly the same vein as the electrical outputs. The low power consumption of TEBS G2 allows it to work all the way down to 8 Volts, meaning thatyour truck will stop working long before TEBS G2does. Trailers fitted with TEBS G2 can be supplied intocountries using 12 volt systems, preventing the needto install specialist systems.Lift axle overrides have always been a difficult subjectin the past – do you put a switch on the trailer orhave all your units wired to suit? No need now, as thenew system can be signalled via the footbrake. Threepumps of the brake in six seconds and the TractionAssist/Lift Axle Override will be activated; this can beoperated by any unit that is pulling the trailer. If you have a mixed fleet of ABS / EBS trucks you canalso take advantage of our dual parameter option -the trailer can have two sets of parameters to suit thetwo types of towing vehicle, improving compatibilitywith both towing vehicle types. And finally, when combined with the latest TrailerInformation Module (TIM G2) we have constant date, and time, stamped data logging for 10 years -allowing in-depth analysis of trailer usage, performance and driving style. All of these features combine to give Knorr-Bremsethe most advanced and flexible system on the market,in the simplest package, with the easiest installation.

Knorr-Bremse were the first manufacturer tointroduce an effective Roll Stability Program

(RSP) - a system which may well become mandatory in the next few years.

Our Trailer Information Module (TIM) is the only English speaking (or whatever other

language you would like) on-board diagnosticsystem - no code books required here! It will also givea direct reading of axle and bogie load in Kg. for thoseinterested in such things. Our system features the fewest number of valves (twoif you’re counting) on the market and is by far theeasiest to install. We have the most advanced and flexible software -making us the choice of the specialist trailermanufacturer. Finally, we have a comprehensive service networktrained in the operation and service of allKnorr-Bremse products. That’s all very impressive, but “What’s next?” I hearyou ask. TEBS G2 - that’s what!TEBS G2 is the combination of our existing TEBS4system, together with technology from our marketleading Truck EBS, EBS5, fitted as standard by MAN,Scania, Volvo and Renault. This blend has allowed usto create a “state-of-the-art”Trailer Braking Systemthat is the perfect match for the Truck it even lookspretty similar. This evolution has brought all of the existing featuresinto a new product which offers even betterperformance and even more functionality. Couple that

It might seem unlikely that a trailer building company on thenorth east coast of Scotland would emerge as one of the UK’sleading builders of dry-freight and temperature-controlledbodywork, but to the operators who buy the company’s productsone word is all the explanation needed: quality.

Gray & Adams - Sharon Clancy visits the Fraserburgh plant

12

the Fraserburgh plant

Gray and Adams has anunrivalled reputation amongstboth temperature controlled anddry freight operators for thebuild quality of its vehicle bodiesand trailers. The Fraserburgh-based company celebrated its50th anniversary in 2007, havingbeen formed by Jim Gray andJim Adams in 1957 to supplytemperature control bodies forlocal fish and meat companieswho needed to transport theirproducts to markets in the south.Aberdeenshire is home not onlyto the world-famous AberdeenAngus beef producers, but also to many of Scotland’sfishing fleets.

13

Page 14: COMPANY MAGAZINE - 09 PREMIER APRIL 2008

Fraserburgh is the company’sheadquarters, dedicated to trailerdesign and manufacturing, butthere are now also three sitesmanufacturing rigid bodies atDunfermline, Doncaster andNewtonabbey, Northern Ireland.

Both standard and specialised trailers and vehiclebodies are designed and built to order. The rangeincludes several unique specifications such ascommand steer trailers designed for inner city use;high capacity clinical waste vehicles; premium buildcustodial vehicles for the safe transportation ofpersons in custody and twin deck refrigerated and dryfreight trailers with fixed or moving floors.Attention to detail ensures that bodies and trailershave a long operational life, with insulated rigidbodies typically remounted on second or third chassis. The robust bodywork is reliable in service and lowmaintenance, which minimises downtime. All trailers undergo a steering geometry check usingLasalign equipment. “Misaligned trailer axles can

cause excess tyre wear from day one, so we check thealignment before they enter service,” explainstechnical engineer Doug Robertson.

Doubling upGray and Adams has been at the forefront of adevelopment in which UK trailer builders pioneered:double-deck trailers. The trailers, which can have fixedor lifting deck upper floors, provide up to 50% morecarrying capacity than standard 13.6m trailers. Theygenerate significant cost savings for operators onvehicles, tyres, fuel and maintenance. In 1983, Gray & Adams broke new ground with theintroduction of the UK’s first refrigerated twin-decktrailer. “The lifting-deck design is simple, to ensure

Technical Engineer - Doug Robertson

14

Page 15: COMPANY MAGAZINE - 09 PREMIER APRIL 2008

in-service reliability,” says Doug. Some double-deckshave fixed floors and an external tail-lift to off-loadgoods on the top deck, while others have a liftinginternal floor that runs the length of the trailer. “It’s aquestion of horses for courses,” says Doug. “On someretail operations, an external tail-lift is necessary tooff-load deliveries. All of Gray and Adams trailers have EBS and roll-stability fitted as standard. When operating solely inthe UK and Northern Ireland, trailers can be taller thanthe maximum 4-metre height permitted on theEuropean mainland. “Tall double-deckers maximisethe load capacity of the trailer,” explains Doug.“Customers tend to specify 4.8 or 4.9-metre talltrailers, with the second deck at 1.7 or 1.8 metres. That raises the centre of gravity and increases thepotential for the driver to get into a roll-oversituation.”Doug believes that regardless of whether operatorsspecify disc or drum brakes, a trailer informationsystem such as Knorr-Bremse’s TIM (TrailerInformation Module) more than justifies its smallprice premium. “TIM pays for itself as it helpsoperators identify any faults in the braking systemthat may develop.”Some operators are now fitting braking pad wearindicators, he reports. “That allows them to getmaximum service life out of the pads without riskingthe safety of the operation.”Doug also believes that as more electronic systems arebeing fitted to trailers, reliability of the electronics isparamount to overall in-service reliability. “The latestgeneration TEBS G2 stores an enormous amount ofinformation. With the roll stability feature, for

example, it records not only the event itself but alsowhat happened leading up to it. All the parametersare programmed into the TEBS G2 ECU duringproduction. Each trailer is then given a full end-of-linetest.

Keep the noise downNoise is a big issue for operators of temperature-controlled operations. “The diesel engine in therefrigeration unit can be noisy, especially for night-time deliveries to supermarkets in residential areas,”points out Doug. Some customers, he says, areinstalling the diesel engine in a separatecompartment under the chassis where noise ismuffled. A desire to minimise noise explains why many of Grayand Adams customers eschew hardwearing non-slipaluminium treadplate floors in favour of GRP floorsimpregnated with grit. “Aluminium is the bestsolution in terms of wear-resistance and watertightness, but it is very noisy for roll-cage operations.A grit-impregnated GRP floor is less noisy.”

ManufacturingDuring the last four years alone, more than £6.0m hasbeen invested in the Fraserburgh manufacturingfacility including the purchase of technically advancedCNC machinery for panel production and bodyworkassembly. The company has ISO9001 accreditation, sothere is full traceablity of all products. Gray and Adams has been manufacturing its ownpanels since 1978, when longer, 13.6-metre trailerswere first allowed on UK roads. “Body panels are anintrinsic part of the strength of a trailer and webelieve having our own in-house panel-makingfacility gives us greater quality control,” says Doug.He points out that panels take a lot of in-servicewear-and-tear with a constant barrage of knocksfrom pallets and roll-cages on the inside and potentialdamage on the outside. Insulated panels comprisefive elements: a foam core surrounded by plywoodpanels and topped with a GRP layer.

This diversity is reflected in the council’s commercial vehicle fleet and the scale andcapabilities of its Polmadie Garage vehicle workshop near the city centre. With over 60,000sq ft of floor space, its mechanics can work on dozens of large vehicles at any one time anddeliver a service which extends from panel making and resprays through routinemaintenance to complex fabrication work. Steve Law catches up with Emil Laiolo

Assistant TransportManager, Emil Laiolo, whoheads the council’s vehicleworkshops said:“At Polmadie we look after400 heavy vehicles, including bin lorries, roadsweepers, gulley machines, skip lorries, tankers, tippersand ejection trailers. We have a further workshopto the north of the city forour 1000-strong fleet oflight vehicles.”“Like every part of GlasgowCity Council, vehicle andplant maintenance has todemonstrate value formoney.” Emil Laiolo added.“We continuously qualitycheck our service and theresults are independentlyaudited. But while value is a keydriver for the wholeorganisation, this mustcome second to safety and,of course, environmentalconsiderations, where weall aim to set an example.Everyone wants a cleanercity.”

Green Fleet awardIn 2004 the council was awarded the Transport News‘Green Fleet’ Award in recognition of the steps takento reduce vehicle emissions (through the widespreaduse of particulate filters), reduce fuel consumptionand convert large numbers of vehicles to run on LPG.“Glasgow takes transport – and the part its ownvehicle fleet plays in the life of the city – veryseriously indeed” Emil Laiolo explained. “This is carriedthrough to the specific duties of every member ofstaff; everyone has a personal development planwhich addresses all aspects of their individual

Emil Laiolo

responsibilities and ensures they receive theappropriate training. Their performance is thenmeasured against this plan.”“For example, all of our drivers are required to carryout daily inspections on their vehicles - lights, tyresand wiper blades etc – and to report any defectsimmediately” Emil Laiolo added. “This is regarded as akey safety measure and drivers are allocated sufficienttime to carry it out. “ Glasgow uses the Freight Transport Association toprovide an independent audit of its maintenancesystems; this process also identifies any defects on 18

Page 19: COMPANY MAGAZINE - 09 PREMIER APRIL 2008

the authority’s own inspectors or those of VOSA willstill carry out spot checks at any time.

From dustbin to landfill“Many authorities take their collection lorries direct tolandfill but this means exposing them to potentialdamage, so we take the waste in trailers” explainedEmil Laiolo. “When you’re running on made-up roadsthe damage to the underside of the vehicle can bereally quite considerable, so we’d rather confine therisk to 18 trailers rather than 110 bin lorries, withsome costing £125,000.”The collection lorries empty their loads into a largebuilding known as the ‘loft’ at the end of an elevatedroadway, where a caterpillar shovel scoops it up anddrops it down into an open ejection trailer in theloading bay below. “These articulated 44 tonners playa big part in the process” added Emil Laiolo. “Theyhaul around 400,000 tonnes of waste a year to theauthority’s landfill site 7 miles outside the city centre.”“Five years ago four of our artics rolled in a threemonth period – even though we’d been using thesame route for some time without a problem.Fortunately there were no serious injuries. VOSAchecked out the vehicles and confirmed they were allOK, but we had been moving over from flat bedtrailers to ejection trailers at the time. The latter areover 4 metres high.“Given the safety implications it wasn’t enough to askthe drivers to take extra care.” Emil Laiolo explained.“We looked around the market and decided to fit anew trailer roll stability solution that had beenrecently introduced by commercial braking specialists,Knorr-Bremse. Our drivers were a little scepticalinitially, given that they’d been driving 44 tonnersover these routes for years, but after hearing of theexperiences of other experienced drivers, and tryingthe systems for themselves, they were happy to adoptthem.”The Knorr-Bremse Roll Stability Programme (RSP)uses a lateral acceleration sensor fitted in the brakingsystem to protect heavy vehicle trailers against rollover. In the words of Emil Laiolo: “If one of the wheelsstarts to lift from the road the system brakes thetrailer to correct it in a blink of an eye; we’ve sincefitted RSP to all of our heavy trailers and consider it tohave been a very worthwhile investment.”

The changingface of GlasgowWith a population approaching 600,000, Glasgow isScotland's largest city and the commercial capital ofScotland. Home to many of Scotland's leadingbusinesses, the city is now recognised as one ofEurope's top 20 financial centres. But it was only 20 years ago that Glasgow stillsuffered from negative images as a dirty, dangerousplace synonymous with street gangs and footballviolence. This was hardly an environment in which tobuild a flourishing tourist industry and attract inwardinvestment, so the city embarked upon a noveldevelopment strategy based upon leveraging thecity’s cultural heritage. This led to a number of major initiatives, starting withthe opening of the Burrell Collection - a purpose-builtgallery constructed to house a stunning and extensivecollection of 9,000 artefacts presented to the city byship owner Sir William Burrell’s and his wife in 1944.A ground-breaking event was the city’s ‘ Year ofCulture’ in 1990, which encompassed music, drama, theatre, and visual arts, together with the celebrationof other aspects of the city, such as architecture, design, engineering, shipbuilding and sport, whichcharacterise Glasgow as a progressive, dynamic placeto live, work and visit. The City of Culture tag allowed Glasgow to showcasemany facilities including the most visited municipalart collection in the UK outside London; the splendidMuseum of Transport; and the largest free publicreference library in Europe.Since the 1990s further huge investments have beenmade in Glasgow’s cultural infrastructure, includingthe Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and the GlasgowAuditorium, designed by Sir Norman Foster, whichhas already become a building of major iconic status.Known locally as the Armadillo for its silver shelldesign, this state-of-the-art 3,000-seater venue isGlasgow’s answer to the Sydney Opera House.Glasgow was the first British city to use the arts as acatalyst for urban regeneration; the benefits of thispolicy have been huge, and are still being felt wellinto the new millennium.

vehicles in for scheduled servicing that should havebeen previously reported by the drivers. Theseincidents are then logged and passed to the seniormanagement of the department concerned forinvestigation. The loading – and weight distribution – of refusecollection lorries is another key consideration for theauthority. They collect from over 280,000 householdsand the drivers hold the first line of responsibility forkeeping their vehicle loading within the legalrequirements. With training and experience of theroute the drivers know how to stay within weight, but 19

After the system cut-off pressure has been reachedthe non-return valve opens, cleaning the cartridge of condensates and contamination. The regenerating air passes through the coalescingfilter removing the particles and cleaning it.

The OSC is completely interchangeable with theconventional cartridge. So when you’re next changingthe filter cartridge on your vehicle upgrade to the OSCfor premium performance.

Current applications of the OSC are:-Part number: K009460 - Will replace all standardfilter cartridge applicationsPart number: K014712 - Left hand thread forcertain Renault and Volvo modelsPart number: K015857 - Dedicated design for DAFapplications.

The conventional filter cartridge is the mostcommonly used filter cartridge on the market todayand has well proven effectiveness in preventingmoisture and other particles from entering the aircontrol systems. However, the Oil Separator Cartridge(OSC), a 2-in-1 filter cartridge, is a development fromthe conventional filter cartridge. Its unique designcarries all the benefits of the conventional cartridgebut it also filters and removes practically all oilimpurities before the air reaches the desiccant in thecartridge. By doing so it protects not only the aircontrol systems from oil contamination but also thedesiccant itself assuring an optimal dryingperformance.

Apart from humidity, the other most common formof contamination comes from oil particles andaerosols. These occur during normal compressoroperation, but over time can cause reduced dryingefficiency of the desiccant leading to corrosion andthe potential for winter freezing problems. Damagecan also occur to the lubricants and seals of theproducts within the air system, and in extreme cases

clogging of pipes and valves. The OSC from Knorr-Bremse not only tackles thesecontamination problems to the compressed airsystem, but has been designed so that the filteringsequence also protects the desiccant fromcontamination. Before passing into the desiccant, thecompressed air passes through a multilayered finepore filter (coalescing filter), which removes oil, oilderivatives and aggressive aerosols thus preventingcontamination of the desiccant. The Knorr-BremseOSC incorporates a non-return valve which remainsclosed and ensures the air stream must pass throughthe filter before entering the desiccant.

Only the Knorr-Bremse OSC removes oilcontamination before the air reaches thedesiccant - other makes of oil separatorcartridge have the coalescing filter after thedesiccant thereby failing to give the desiccantprotection.

The final part of the process is the regeneration of thedesiccant which all filter cartridges must perform.
