GPE LED s.r.l. (GPELED) was born on the year 2008 from GPE s.r.l. with the target to provide any possible lighting solution based exclusively on LED technology.G.P.E. s.r.l. (GPE) , the founding company of GPELED, was established on the year 1980 with the mission to provide innovative solutions for the photofinishing market.GPE introduced many different products during his long life in the photo business, just to mention some of them:• Automation systems for large photofinishing laboratories, providing efficient

solution to customers like Kodak, Fuji and Agfa• High speed and professional paper processors• Dedicated projects for Agfa equipment• The D-Carrier: the first innovative digital solution to convert analog minilabs into

digital onesTo design such a variegated range of products several skills had to be well coordinat-ed, mechanics, electronics, optical physics, chemistry and of course SW. A fast proto-typing was also a must.On the year 2006 the solid background knowledge of the power LED technology pre-viously developed for image processing on photo printing equipment was addressed to implement new solutions for the market of illumination. During the past four years several solutions have been implemented adopting the latest technology available. On the year 2008 the growth of the market required GPE to establish a separate Com-pany to focus on the illumination business: GPELED. GPELED is now steadily design-ing, developing and marketing lighting products based on power LED technology, of which the street lights is now a booming segment. GPELED is promoting its products under the GPE LED trademarkThe actual share capital of GPELED is 710,000 EUROs. 32 Company employees are engaged in R&D, mechanical parts manufacturing, assembling and sales. The actual market covered by GPELED are Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, Greece, Cyprus, France, China and Hong Kong.

The R&D and manufactur-ing plant is located in Az-zano Decimo, 1 hour far by car from the Venice Airport


Our mission & activities

Since the beginning the main target of GPE LED has been to enhance the LIGHTING REVOLUTION. The. LIGHTING REVOLUTION is the replacement of traditional illumination systems with the LED technology systems. This target is widely justified by the “green trend”: savings of energy, extremely long life i.e. drastic reduction of maintenance cost and high quality of the light. Since the beginning the LEDs CREE supplier has been selected for all of GPE LED prod-ucts, because of the high standards of quality, despite of the higher costs. This choice has been confirmed to be the right one over the years, the new CREE LEDs generations will further speed up the LIGHTING REVOLUTION.GPELED can now take advantage of the technological experience to manufacture high efficiency lamps featuring power saving rates higher than 50% compared to traditional ones.To summarize the content of our core technology:• Highly efficient thermal management solutions, to control and keep at minimum

level the operating temperature of the LED components, which means enhancing their lifetime and luminous flux.

• High efficient DC to DC converters embedded on the LED holding IC. Other than maximizing the energy efficiency this choice allows to manufacture thin and com-pact lamps that can be connected to low voltage lines. Over voltage and over cur-rent protection circuits are included as well.

• High efficient and reliable AC to DC converters with efifciency rates from 75% in case of low voltage input lines (competitors figures range between 55% to 60%) up to 93% in case of high input voltage. The high reliability of our devices make our lamps long lasting as the LED components (50K to 100K hours). Statistics show that the average life of poorly controlled LEDS is two years!

• Customized optical solutions for lens dedicated to special applications.

The GPE LED activities include:• To design, manufacture and promote the products included on the GPE LED General

Catalogue (the year 2010 version is available) through specialized sale points, deal-ers, distributors or wholesale channels. The General catalogue includes a wide range of products for architects, interior designers and gardens

• To design, manufacture and sell products for public illumination including OEM solu-tions to upgrade existing traditional decorative lamps with LED technology.

• To design and manufacture OEM lamps and lighting solutions for Industry and Com-merce (for example lamps for industrial refrigerators and furniture shops).

• To design, manufacture and sell fixtures to illuminate Offices, large Industry and Commercial areas

All the products developed by GPELED are entirely designed (mechanic components, IC and SW) and manufactured inside the GPELED Company.The mechanical parts are designed by a 3D Cad Mod-elling SW, Solid Works, to squeeze down the time to market of each new product. This solution allows the mechanic manufacturing department to provide pro-totypes in a very short time at lower cost compared to traditional design methods.The rendering images of new products can be shared in advance with customers.Contrary to the case of the traditional light fix-tures, the electronic design for the LED lights is the most elaborated part of the products. An efficient and reliable driving technique is a must for successful luminary.

Also in this case the electronic design is done entirely inside GPELED Company, from the search of components to the PCBs design: a key point to transform an idea to a IC board within a short while.

The job is done adopting an highly integrated electronic CAD solution (Altium Designer), supported by the experience and data of hundreds of applications developed by GPE earlier for photofinishing equipment.

Mechanic manufacturing

Most of the mechanical parts of each lamp are manufactured though milling and lathe machines, metal frames by punching presses, welding and bending machines.The linking tool between design and manufacturing is the MasterCam SW.

The lathe machines are equipped with automation SW which al-lows the equipment to operate 24 H a day for high quantities and low production cost, while the mill machines are in general provided for batch operations and special products.

Assembling & testing

The surface treatment of the components manufactured by GPELED is done by specialized partner Companies. Some parts that do not need special treatments are stocked directly on our warehouse.The components of Electronic boards are assembled by our partner Company GDS and tested optically. The finished boards are delivered directly to the lamps assembling lines.After the assembling of the lamps is completed all the products are tested for proper operations. Further tests are carried out for products featuring a high IP index ( for example waterproof products).

The GPELED warehouse covers over 30% of the total production area. Inside are stored over 3,000 parts to fulfil customers’ demands.

The assembling lines are split according to the line of products: street lights, industrial and commercial lights and catalogue products


Lighting/sale support

Our sales offices are supported by a lighting engineer to suggest suitable and dedicat-ed lighting solutions to our customers.Each complex request from our customers are examined and simulated. As a result a lighting report describing in detail the appearance and values of the lighting param-eters of the final installation is sent for approval.The photometric files of each product can be downloaded dynamically from GPE web site for self made simulations.Our engineers can supply reports for installation of street lights, based on EU regula-tions (EU regulations comply with far East regulation too)

GPE LED Catalogue line

This product line is manufactured by CNC machines and using exclusively high grade aluminium or stainless steel. The products resulting feature excellent finishing ap-pearance. Most of them can be selected with different LED colours, power supply (at low or high voltage) and surface finishing colours.The product belonging to this line cover several applications:• Fixed and adjustable spot light for interiors• Light lines driven at 12 VDC or 24 VDC for interiors• Adjustable lights at high IP level for external applications• Garden lights• Waterproof lights (ex. for pools, saunas..)• RGB lights for interiors or exterior (architectural lights)• Pendant lights• Power lights (special lamps with high luminous flux into a small case)

Commercial products line

This recent product line has been designed at the end of the year 2009 with the aim to begin the real LED LIGHT REVOLUTION. The new products included are designed to make good use of the new LEDs released by CREE, combined with the well tested GPELED technology for drivers and optics, with the target to replace conventional fluorescent lights.The new LED fixtures can be installed on the ceiling as well as on modular ceiling struc-tures.All the lamps are provided with a AC to DC converter to be plugged in to the normal power line (standard 230 VAC in Europe). The AC to DC converter is designed for the maximum power conversion efficiency.Compared to most of competitor’s products that use a light line inside a tube we have designed brand new fixtures to optimize the thermal management and optical efficien-cy to squeeze down virtually to zero the maintenance requirements.

Tests and simulations have shown that the energy cost can be reduced in average by 50% compared to new and top quality fluorescent lamps and over 70% compared to most of fluorescent lamps available on the market.

High ceilings and wide areas line

The purpose of this line of products is to replace the convention-al fluorescent luminaries on buildings featuring high ceilings and wide areas. The lamps are designed also for outdoor applications to replace HPS lamps.GPELED has designed this line of products using at best the LED technology evolution, which is pushing up the light efficiency at unprecedented top values of 180 lm/W! (refer to http://www.cree.com/press/press_detail.asp?i=1265232091259)The GPELED LED lamps of this product line feature a high IP in-dex, can be installed at heights over 6 m, even on dusty environ-ments. In this case the surface can be washed at need with high pressure water.

A number of accessories for attachment to the line power are available for installation. All the lamps are provided with a AC to DC converter to be plugged in to the normal power line (standard 230 VAC in Europe). The AC to DC converter is designed for the maximum power conversion efficiency and long life. The power consumption com-pared to conventional florescent lamps is higher than 50%.The fixture shown on the image covers an area of 4mx4m. The range of colour temperature that can be selected is from 4000 to 6000 °K. The suggested colour temperature for interiors is 5000 °K, similar to midday sunny light.

The image shows an installation inside the GPELED building, in the warehouse zone, that covers 25% of the to-tal surface of the production area. Each LED lamp, 48x1.1W, have replaced a 2x58W fluorescent lamp fixture. At ground level the luminosity is now 15% higher. The energy consumption, at the same level of ground illumination is down by more than 70%! Additional advantages are an extended long life and no dust inside the lamps, which means virtually no maintenance required.

Street lighting solutions

GPELED has designed LED fixtures for street light illumination adopting a completely different optical approach respect to competitors. The result is an excellent performing lamp for public areas illumination.The basic idea has been to adopt highly transparent lenses and focusing each group of LEDs inside the structure to cover evenly the area of the road illuminated. Test made on several com-petitor’s lamps that adopt scattering lenses to make the fixtures small have shown that in this way 20% of the light flux is lost. Particular care has been dedicated to the ther-

mal management of the LED circuits as well

as the heat dissipation of the holding frames.

Thermal tests on our lamps show that the ex-

pected lifetime of the LEDs is 350K hours be-

fore loosing 30% of the initial light flux. The ad-

vantage is not limited to the extended long life

but includes a steady level of illumination, con-

trary to most of the conventional HPS lamps.


Design products line

GPELED has implemented several fashion lamps in cooperation with one of the most famous Italian Architects, Mr. Tobia Scarpa.Fully understanding the advantage of the new LED technology Mr. Tobia Scarpa has designed all the lamps be-longing to this product line. The frames are manufactured exclusively by CNC machinery, using high grade alu-minium and stainless steel.Some products of this line include parts made with Murano glass, a matching between a sharp edge technology and traditional hand made products like the famous glass of the Venice island.As it is for the GPELED LED lamps, the products of this line marked by a fashionable design share the great advan-tages of the LED technology, i.e. low power consumption, long life and high reliability.
