BeyWatch: Building EngergY WATCHer Project Summary & Objectives

BeyWatch is a FP7-ICT-2007 project which covers ICT for environmental management and energy efficiency. It proposes an energy-aware and user-centric solution, able to provide intelligent energy monitoring/control and power demand balancing at home/building & neighbour level.

The system will:

A) Interconnect legacy professional/ consumer electronic devices with a new generation of energy-aware white-goods, where multilevel hierarchic metering, control, and scheduling will be applied (based on power demand, network conditions and personal preferences).

B) Via an innovative hybrid photovoltaic/solar system, it will be able to produce hot water and energy, which will be used at home or at peak hours fed to the electricity network.

The proposed system will function in a two layers hierarchy:

— Micro-management plane: interactive monitor/control of all the devices in the home, and RES power generation in order to achieve amortization of loads and peak suppression of small-scale power consumption.

— Medium-management plane: medium-level control and coordination of the energy resources at larger geographical regions.

Implement methods, techniques and services to reduce the power consumption in smart/green homes/blocks/neighbours by intelligent control of electrical devices

Generate hot water and electricity from RES at building level, leading to further power savings and energy consumption/production optimisation services

Elaborate business plans and BSS applications that will help the users and the providers to reach beneficiary contracts

Motivate user’s awareness, towards less CO2 emissions on the whole energy value chain (production, transportation, distribution, supply) and cleaner environment.

1. Study and specify the energy consumption and power demand models taking into consideration:

• Building/Domain type (i.e. house, office, hotel, hospital, etc)• White goods power demand (i.e. heating, cooling, lighting, refrigeration, etc)• User needs and requirements as a function of the season/environment conditions.• Consumption, preferences and modify the operational status of the device• Special requirements for various domains (i.e. health-care, elderly people, outdoors

installations, etc)

2. Design and prototype three ultra-low power consumption white-products: • Refrigerator (electronic controlled)• Dishwasher and a washing machine (efficient management of hot water). • Integrate “Watcher” functionality

3. Specify applicable services and develop the interconnection methods, • the M2M interfaces • the primitive-based communication.

4. Design and develop the BeyWatch “Agent” platform. • Communicate with the various white-goods and energy-consuming devices• Calculate and display in real-time, the instant energy-consumption of the

home/domain• Remote control the energy aware devices• Communicate with the BeyWatch Supervisor

5. Design and implement an intelligent user-oriented SW “Agent”. • OSGi-compatible open programming interfaces for personalised services creation and instantiation• Automatically capture/model user’s behaviour and preferences. • Utilise the user profile to control the white goods and energy-consumption devices.

6. Design and implement the BeyWatch “Supervisor” system. • Distributed system/platform for the management and control of energy consumption and power

demand at a local/square or urban geographical level. • Aggregate the lower hierarchy layer BeyWatch “Agent” consumption patterns• Remotely control their consumption based on the network conditions, the electricity requirements

forecast and the customer contract.

7. Optimize, prototype and integrate an innovative combined photovoltaic/solar (CPS) system. • Produce electrical energy and hot water for the house• Supply hot water to the energy-aware white goods• Communicate with eth BeyWatch Agent in order to act according to energy management rules• Feed the home and the public electricity network on peak hours.

8. Study, analyse, evaluate and validate the results, as well as the conduction of case studies and business models for the wider adoption of the platform and the proposed services. • Perform extended energy modelling and simulation on state of the art platforms and real

laboratories• Creation of flexible business models and shaping of a dynamic energy market.

9. Participate and contribute in standardization efforts, special guidelines and regulations for the monitoring and control of energy consumption and power demand.
