MAIN RESULTS OF COMPARATIVE MANAGEMENT RESEARCH

• There is no universal applicability of eitherauthoritarian or participating-democraticmanagement styles. In general the United Statescan best be characterized as followingdemocratic-participative style, while Germany,France, and most of the developing countriesare authoritarian in their management style. Theauthoritarian style is not necessarilydysfunctional in developing countries. Thisperhaps may be the "right type" of leadership.

DIFFERENCES• Customs: - Customs are important in comparative

management. This is because there are diversecustoms.

• For example in many foreign countries, it has beena custom to take considerable time before adecision is made on a business proposal. Somecountries place a high priority on exact promptness, while in others it is relative.

• Again in others haggling over a price is expected.Yet in others friendship rank high and doingbusiness with relatives and close family friends haspriority.

• Social Value: - These are also extremelyimportant in comparative management. Theyinfluence to a great extent how the managementtask is carried out. Examples are:-

• In Japan, personal qualifications are given muchweight in recruiting. Minimal job mobility is thegeneral rule, retirement at the age of 55 isdesirable, women are employed in greatnumbers, but most are considered temporary

DIFFERENCES

• In Europe• When a person retires everyone knows who

the successor will be. Promoting reaches downthe line for the one who is advanced. Thegeneral practice is to wait for your superior toretire, and then promotion comes.

• But there are so many exceptions to thismundane approach. For example, the youngergenerations are reacting rapidly to it, by insistingthat ability should be considered. Seniority aloneis inadequate and inequitable.

Page 18: COMPARATIVE MANAGEMENT - …€¦ · management styles. ... Few Japanese companies use a performance rating system. ... Similarities and Differences between Arab and American Managers

DIFFERENCES

• In Japan for example decision making is byconsensus or ringisei – Japanese spend muchtime on finding out what others are thinking andhow they feel about issues.

• The prevailing belief is that the Japanesemanager must know how subordinates feelabout a certain issue; otherwise one cannotmaintain the peace and harmony of the group.Again a decision is always started by anemployee at a low level in the organisation.
