A topic sentence presents the main idea of a paragraph. It should be one complete sentence. A comparison or contrast topic sentence should include the

names of the two items being compared or contrasted (e.g. The United States and the United Arab Emirates ).

It should mention the focus – different, similar or both different and similar E.g. The United States and the United Arab Emirates differ…). E.g. The United States is similar to the United Arab Emirates…)

It should state how many points of difference/similarity your paragraph will discuss. E.g. The United States and the United Arab Emirates differ in four

important ways). E.g. The United States is similar to the Arab United Emirates in

four important ways.

You can provide support for the important details (i.e. the points of similarity or difference) through examples or common knowledge if there is not time for research (i.e. a test) or through the findings of research (opinions of experts, statistics, findings of studies, etc.) by using quotation, paraphrase or summary if there is time for research.

Page 17: Comparison contrast paragraph ver2

The United States and the United Arab Emirates differ in four important ways. While the United States is geographically large, the United Arabs Emirates is comparatively small in size. Another difference is that the United States has a large population; however, the United Arab Emirates has a smaller population. It is estimated that America has approximately 315 million people whereas the United Arab Emirates has around 9 million people. An additional area of difference surrounds the demographic make-up of the population. In America, the majority of the population are citizens of the country, but in the United Arab Emirates the opposite is the case. The majority of the population are expatriate workers. The final major area of difference between these two countries is the physical environment. The United States has a varied physical environment; on the other hand, the United Arab Emirates has a largely homogenous environment. For instance, in America there are forests, deserts, mountain and lakes while in the United Arab Emirates most of the country is desert. In sum, the two countries major differences are related to their geography, population, demography and environment.
