    Report of the Emotional literacy Wellbeing group

    The group started with a discussion in pairs of what Wellbeing meant to them. It

    became clear that most people saw wellbeing as the social and emotional

    development of people, either individually or with others. Note, for those interested some

    basic discussions are in the Research Report DCSF-RW073 What do we mean by wellbeing? And

    why might it matter?

    We then looked at the way the Conservative Government was using the term and

    concluded that it was in an objective way that could be measured and was largely

    economic and individual (See Appendix 1). Hence one locus of discussion could be

    the extent to which wellbeing was seen as emotional, individual or group, and the

    extent to which it could be measured objectively.

    Definitions of emotional intelligence and emotional literacy were then discussed and

    the difference between them explored (see Appendix 2). This brought out thatemotional intelligence is largely seen as an individualistic concept, but emotional

    literacy was seen as a social and emotional process that incorporated the individual

    and others, and also equity.

    Hence some aspects that could deepen a discussion on wellbeing were raised,

    namely:

    The definition was cultural and could have political overtonesCould be individual and/or communal

    Could be objective or subjective

    Could involve equity.

    The groups were then mixed up so that people could hear other member's

    viewpoints and spent 45 minutes in a wide ranging discussion. Each group produced

    one key point, with other subsidiary ones. There was then a feedback and discussion

    of the issues. Below the main points are typed and subsidiary points on yellow post-its:

    Wellbeing: a sense of self-worth. Enhance in and out of school; social and

    emotional interactions.

    ECM: equal worth to all strands (Every Child Matters - be healthy; stay

    safe; enjoy and achieve; positive contribution; economic wellbeing) Note, the

    strand enjoy and achieve was discussed and criticised for being little to do with

    enjoyment, and 'achieve' only referred to exams. This needs to be changed.

    Results: a focus on academic exam results have taken away from what we

    consider to the 'core' elements of education and wellbeing.

    Definitions of emotional intelligence

    the ability to perceive accurately, appraise and express emotion; the ability to access and/or

    generate feelings which facilitate thought; the ability to understand emotion and emotional

    knowledge; the ability to regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth

    (Mayer and Salovey, 1997: 10)

    Emotional Literacy is made up of the ability to understand your emotions, the ability to listen to others

    and empathise with their emotions, and the ability to express emotions productively. To be

    emotionally literate is to be able to handle emotions in a way that improves your personal power and

    improves the quality of life around you. Emotional literacy improves relationships, creates loving

    possibilities between people, makes co-operative work possible, and facilitates the feeling of

    community. (Steiner 1997: 11).

    The ability to understand ourselves and other people, and in particular to be aware of, understand, and

    use information about the emotional states of ourselves and others with competence. It includes the

    ability to understand, express and manage our own emotions, and respond to the emotions of others,

    in ways that are helpful to ourselves and others. (Weare 2003)

    Emotional literacy involves factors such as people understanding their own and others' emotional

    states; learning to manage their emotions and to empathise with others. It also includes the

    recognition that emotional literacy is both an individual development and a collective activity and is

    both about self-development and the building of community so that ones own sense of emotional

    well-being grows along with that of others, and not at their expense. Emotional literacy involves

    connections between people and working with their differences and similarities while being able to

    handle ambiguity and contradiction. It is a dynamic process through which the individual develops

    emotionally and involves culture and empowerment. For example, it includes understanding how the

    nature of social class, 'race' and gender (sexism and homophobia) impinge on peoples' emotionalstates to lead to an understanding of how society could change. Hence it incorporates an
