Compassion is the kind of word that we don’t seem to use very often. We stop to define it even less. However, it is such an important word that it deserves more of our attention. I have discovered a number of definitions of the word and all of them come back to the essential qualities of kindness and caring.

George Washington Carver was an American scientist, botanist, educator and

inventor. As an agricultural chemist, Carver discovered three hundred uses for peanuts and hundreds more for soybeans, pecans and sweet potatoes. He was also noted for several dozen pearls of wisdom. One of his most famous quotes was directed straight to interpersonal relationships that on the surface had nothing to do with his inventions. He said, “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.”

Mr. Carver had compassion for the farmers in the South and devoted much of his life to helping them. He discovered many uses for their peanuts, thus improving their life by making a market for their product. Because of his compassion for the peanut farmers, he helped them form a better quality of life by offering them his ideas and products. If someone shows kindness, caring, and a willingness to help others, they are showing compassion.

“Caring Is Our Calling” is not just a slogan at Christian Care, it is who we are. It defines our vision. It is kindness. It is caring. It is our willingness to help others. Go into any of our buildings at any time of the day or night, Monday morning, or Friday at 3:00 a.m. and you will find compassion in action, carried out by the hands and feet of our staff with whom you come in contact. Yes, they have a job to do, and they do it very well. What you will find though is more than people just doing a job. Many of them do what they do because they have compassion for those that they care for and serve.

My Aunt Melba, who is 94 years of age, has dementia and lives in our Courtyard memory care unit. One day she said to me, “these people really do take good care of me”. Once again, this 94 year old lady, who struggles to remember my wife and I, despite weekly visits, still knows that she is receiving great care. She knows that because her care givers are people of compassion just like the care givers across our campuses. Yes, “Caring Is Our Calling” and we are passionate about living it.

Within our Mission Statement there is a statement that includes the following: “…is committed to providing housing and health care services for senior adults in a loving and compassionate environment which encourages relationships, independence and dignity through spiritual, physical, social and recreational programs.” After 10 years with this great organization, I still stand amazed at

the evidence of earthly angels who have chosen to work at Christian Care Centers. They provide our senior saints with compassionate care each day. When I visit with our staff I understand that this work to them is much more than a paycheck, it is a calling to serve!

This letter is dedicated to those members of our team who each day come together to form a body of servants, focused on the details of caring for our precious family of residents who live on our campuses. I have witnessed compassion in all things as I participated in the end of life care for my mother with the outstanding CCC group committed to Hospice Care. Each day as Mom got closer to her final journey Home, the staff came and ministered with utmost compassion, dedicated to their chosen profession, having performed with dignity and care beyond measure. My Dad, who has Alzheimer’s, was able to stay in their apartment during this time, so that they could be together as long as possible fulfilling their vows, “until death do us part!” Within a week after Mom’s death, we placed my Dad in our Courtyard Assisted Living for Memory Care. In this place the angel

staff has a very different calling. A calling that creates a positive, loving environment built on allowing their residents to have the utmost in independence and dignity. In addition, they are supported by a host of programming designed to fill the spiritual, physical, social and recreational needs necessary for fulfillment of life!

I am truly honored to serve as the President of this great organization where I have had the privilege to observe these same principles throughout our programs regardless of campus. On any given day, I can walk the halls of either campus and observe compassion being freely given to both residents and fellow staff members. In my tenure, I have also received many letters of encouragement from family members who have observed and experienced the same loving care given to their loved ones. Each day, I realize the core and essence of Christian Care Centers is not the grounds, the trees or the lake, but is the culmination of spirit filled servants who come each day to love one another showing that “Care is Our Calling” when tender hands give loving care.

Thank you Christian Care Centers staff for the blessings that you bring each day! May the spirit of the Lord dwell within you and give you peace, comfort and strength to continue with your great ministry!

In Love

“Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.” 1 Peter 3:8

Christian Care Centers, Inc. (CCC) mission remains to provide health care and housing services for seniors with needs in a comfortable and secure environment. The types of services we provide include Retirement Living, Assisted Living (including Dementia), Health Care Centers (Skilled, Rehab and Dementia), Home Health, and Hospice. {Please refer to explanation below in paragraph three {3} explaining change in Home Health services}. A new project is in the development stage in Allen, Texas.

For the year ending December 31, 2013, Continuing Operations Excess of Revenues over Expenses before Gain of Discontinued Operations (Gunter Campus) was $918,000. Consolidated Revenue over Expenses increased 1.8% or $663,000 for the period. Previously, at December 31, 2012 year-end, actual costs and anticipated costs of closing operations at Gunter were made. Several favorable factors, affecting those anticipated costs, were experienced in 2013, and a positive adjustment resulted to previous 2012 (loss) reserve. A Gain from Discontinued Operations of Gunter Campus of $914,000 was made for 2013. After the recognized gain, Excess of revenues over expenses amounted to $1,832,000. The financial results increased Net Assets at year-end 2013 to $17,763,000. See attached Condensed Combined Statement of Activities and Net Assets.

Retirement Living and Assisted Living revenues were up from previous year as more residents were served, especially in Retirement Living. Health Care Center revenue was stable and many were served. Home Health/Hospice division revenue rates were down mostly due to national Medicare decreases and the division became a significant negative impact upon CCC. The division was reorganized the last quarter of 2013 into Home and Community Based Services (HCBS), suspending the Medicare portion of

the division. HCBS will continue to provide Hospice and Private Assisted Services (PAS). Advancement contributions were well up for the year due to additional individual gifting and participation from the Festival of Trees Gala fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care and services. Church contributions continue to decline.

Contributed Services to Residents, or Charitable Care, was $2,555,000. This was a 7% increase from restated prior year. See comparative bar graph entitled Charitable Care.

Approximately, $1,900,000 was invested in capital expenditures from service equipment to physical plant improvements. Capital spending includes operations, as well as gifts and funds provided from Festival of Trees (FOT) and individually raised funds. FOT spending was for selected dementia items only.

Christian Care Centers, Inc. rated bond indebtedness was again affirmed by Fitch Ratings and by Standard & Poor’s (S&P} rating services. CCC has been blessed with a bond rating for the 18th consecutive year.

Thank you to all residents, resident family members, churches, and individuals who volunteer to support CCC. Your tireless effort and service help provide much needed support to our resident service mission.

The Year of Compassion…It would be difficult to lose faith in the goodness of people while being around the staff, residents, and family members at Christian Care Centers. Acts of compassion can be found at any moment. Often it is a quiet act of a staff member comforting a resident. Sometimes many come together to celebrate the life of a resident and support loved ones in their loss. Many chose to support the needs of others through

donations and volunteering. God’s goodness is manifested through wonderful people every day. Their light shines bright in a world that is sometimes very dark. I am humbled by these acts of servant leadership, love, and compassion. It is a great blessing to be a part of Christian Care Centers.

Challenges and OpportunityWe are in an unprecedented period of change in our healthcare system. These changes are quite challenging, including cuts in reimbursement rates, reductions in covered services, and increased regulatory burden. God has blessed the hard work of our staff as we adapt and seek opportunities in this changing world. We have studied the needs of area hospitals, seeking to align our services with their changing needs. Through these efforts, and hard earned reputation for excellence, we have achieved “preferred provider status” with key hospitals.

Over the past year, hospitals have started receiving fiscal penalties for preventable readmissions. These rising standards, and resulting pressure on hospitals, will increase in the future. Christian Care Centers is providing a leadership role, along with other providers, in the creation of a system that clearly identifies high quality healthcare providers that will help area hospitals meet their goals. This system will ensure the market share for high quality providers, such as Christian Care Centers, and raise the bar on quality for all providers in the metroplex.

Innovation and ProgressChristian Care Centers has been blessed over the past 67 years with strong support for new opportunities to improve the care and quality of life for seniors. It is imperative that we keep looking for new and better ways to fulfill our mission of service to seniors, and to touch more lives in the process. Thanks to God’s blessings and the support of his people, Christian Care Centers continues to lead our industry in innovative programs and technology.

Last year “HealthSense”, an advanced and customizable call system, had been implemented on the Lakewood Village campus. Since then, it has been introduced to the Mesquite campus. The results of this program have been very positive. The greatest benefits have been a dramatic reduction in falls, and quicker staff response time in our Assisted Living environments. Healthsense also provides rich data that allows staff and family members to proactively address residents’ changing needs. This is especially important for residents with early dementia.

In February 2014, the Mesquite campus became the first in Texas to initiate a partnership with Unidine, a dining management company. Focusing on serving not-for-profit organizations, Unidine is distinguished from other dining programs with emphasis on fresh foods and enhancing the dining experience. We are 12 weeks into this partnership and our residents and staff are enjoying fresh foods, more menu choices, and healthful refreshment stations. On a regular basis, the chefs perform food preparation demonstrations for our residents’ enjoyment. Several more enhancements will be phased in over the course of this year.

Christian Care Centers received its Outpatient Therapy license in early 2013. This certification allows us to provide Independent and Assisted Living residents with therapy services at our wellness centers and other venues. We are also able to provide these services to seniors that do not live on our campuses, further extending our mission and touching more lives. We also launched an innovative program, “Quest for Success”, which maximizes quality of life and function for seniors, through customized personal training services.

Christian Care Centers remains committed to the mission of serving seniors. Our residents have much to offer, and they are a blessing we don’t take lightly. Yes, these may be challenging times, but God’s blessings overshadow all difficulties. Our supporters are a big part of these blessings. Without you, we could not do what we do. Thank you for changing lives every day!

THE POWER OF EXCEPTIONAL PEOPLE - EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS

“As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience”– Colossians 3:12

LeadingAge TexasVOLUNTEER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR A GROUP OUTSIDE AN ORGANIZATION

This group of volunteers is dedicated to the mission and ministry of Christian Care Centers, especially the care and enhancement of the lives of those we serve with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. The Festival of Trees Steering Committee used their time, talent, and dedication to raise more than $700,000 during the past five years! They have given more than 500 hours of their time in 2013 to ensure the success of this sold out event. Committee members served in a variety of roles, assisting with a silent and live auction, soliciting for auction items, assembling invitations, wrapping gifts, and setting up the day of the event. Many of the committee members are major underwriters of the event and recruit other underwriters. The Benefit provides an opportunity for concerned individuals to not only ensure the continuance of current state-of-the-art care for Alzheimer’s residents, but underwrite the implementation and innovation of new programs. The 2013 benefit hosted 600 guests in a beautiful venue to kick off the holiday season. A 10’ Christmas tree adorned the stage area, a well known author was the speaker, and a good time was had by all! Christian Care Centers is thankful and blessed that this dedicated group of volunteers was selected as the Group Outside An Organization to receive the VOLUNTEER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD from LeadingAge Texas.

The Festival of Trees Steering Committee is grateful for this award acknowledging the dedicated women who cooperatively work toward a common goal. Since the “birth” of the Christian Care Centers Gala to raise funds for Alzheimer’s patient care and programs, this group has grown in numbers and spirit knowing our efforts provide so many extra benefits for residents and the extra tools for the caregivers who serve them. Each year our gala has become the “place to be” among the fund-raising events in the DFW area. The team of women is like a well-oiled machine working to efficiently plan and execute even the last minute details that has made the Festival of Trees a bigger success each year. Thank you for recognizing this awesome team. FOT Steering Committee members Carolyn

BREAKING THE ALABASTER BOX OF LOVE AND COMPASSION

2013 was the “YEAR OF LOVE” at Christian Care Centers. In 2014 we have selected the “YEAR OF COMPASSION” as our theme. Love and Compassion go hand-in-hand as “Caring is our Calling”.

We saw genuine heartfelt love and compassion from our numerous donors and friends—genuine, selfless, giving from the heart.

In 2013  the alabaster box was broken and your generosity and goodwill perfumed the

air. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all record the breath-taking generosity of Mary. She brings the precious alabaster box and spills its contents of rare perfume upon the Master and lovingly anoints the Messiah. His disciples scoff and criticize. Judas preaches a three word sermon, “What a waste!”  Yet Jesus silences the critics and says that her act was timely and timeless, and that her story would be retold throughout the centuries.

In 2013 you responded to the call by breaking the alabaster box in numerous ways as you showed love and compassion to the residents of Christian Care Senior Living Communities in Mesquite and Fort Worth. Your love and act of giving was timely and timeless.

Your love and compassion funded a new van for the residents of the Mesquite Heath Care Center, so that they now have the transportation needed for numerous activities.

Your love and compassion provided new mattresses for the residents of the Mesquite Health Care center, so that they are more comfortable.

Your love and compassion provided new recliners for the Courtyard Dementia Care Assisted Living and the Mesquite Health Care Center.

Your love and compassion provided Hospice Bibles and a Homecoming Quilt for Hospice patients as they embarked on the last part of their journey home.

Your love and compassion helped Alzheimer’s and Dementia residents stay

connected to their families by providing a computer and iPad so that they can Skype on a regular basis.

Your love and compassion purchased Zoom text magnifier screens for the libraries on the Mesquite Campus so that residents with vision impairments could enjoy reading just as they once had.

Your love and compassion brought daily enjoyment to the residents of Lakewood Village Senior Living Community in Fort Worth by providing an ice cream machine in the dining room. New sidewalks were funded for the Lakewood Village Pavilion so that residents could enjoy the lake and the beauty of their community.

The 2013 Festival of Trees Gala benefiting Alzheimer’s care and programs raised a net of $174,000.00. Funds from the Gala have funded numerous projects to assist with care and programs in Mesquite and Fort Worth. These funds have purchased new furnishings for the lobby and living areas, which include a large screen television for Wii games for residents at the Courtyard Dementia Care Assisted Living. Linked Seniors Kiosk touch screen activity programs are now enjoyed by residents throughout our campuses.

The Gala funds assisted in major renovations of the Mesquite Health Care Center, including a new shower room and commons areas, which directly benefit the residents.

The final phase of HealthSense was funded for the Lakewood Village Senior Living Campus thanks to the Festival of Trees Gala.

Christian Care Centers Senior Living Communities have similarly been anointed by many Marys’ throughout our history. Many of our Marys’ whose sacrifices and generosity have shaped us and ushered us to 2014 are now with the One they loved, but new Marys’ keep arising. Shameless and selfless acts are still compelled by love and compassion. The sweet aroma of extravagant love perfumes our Christian Care Centers campuses. Yes, we see Mary and her alabaster box when we see you, our friends and donors.
