PRELUDE Variations on “Sine Nomine” Proulx

GREETING, WELCOME, AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISCIPLESHIP Welcome to our guests and visitors! As a church of hospitality we invite you, if you feel

comfortable, to introduce yourself at this time. We are glad you are here. We hope you will fill out the Welcome pad (found in the pew holder) to help us get acquainted. We also invite you to join us in Westminster Hall for Coffee Hour following worship.

Everyone - please silence your cell phones.

CALL TO WORSHIP Hymn 2157 (Sing 3 times) Come and Fill Our Hearts (black songbook)

INVOCATION

*HYMN 446 Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken Austrian Hymn (During the singing of the hymn, please pass prayer requests to center aisle.)

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION Eternal God, in every age you have raised up men and women to live and die in faith. Forgive our indifference to your will. You have commanded us to speak, but we have been silent. You have called us to do what is just, but we have been fearful. Have mercy on us, your faithless servants. Keep before us faithful people for us to follow so that, living with courage and love, we may inherit the kingdom promised in Jesus Christ, and share in his reign. Amen.

*SILENT CONFESSION (A time for personal confession of sin)

*ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS Hear the good news! God loves us. God forgives us.

*RESPONSE (Hymn 368, verse 2) I’ve got joy like a fountain, I’ve got joy like a fountain, I’ve got joy like a fountain in-a my soul. (repeat)

*PASSING OF THE PEACE (Having received Christ’s peace, let us share it by turning to our neighbors and greeting them, saying “May the peace of Christ be with you!”)

OFFERING Offertory: (8:30) By the Merits of the Saints Guilmant (10:45) Come, Brothers and Sisters Meyer

Come, brothers and sisters who love one another and have done for years that are gone. How often we’ve met here in sweet heavenly union which opens the way to God’s throne. With joy and thanksgiving we’ll praise God who loved us, while we run the bright shining way. Though we part here in body we’re bound for one glory, and bound for each other to pray. There was Joshua and Joseph, Elias and Moses, that prayed and God heard from the throne. There was Abraham and Isaac, and Jacob, and David, and Solomon, and Stephen, and John. There was Simeon, and Anna, I don’t know how many, that prayed as they journeyed along; Some cast among lions, Some bound with rough irons, yet glory and praises they sung. Some tell us that praying, and also that praising is labor that’s all spent in vain;. But we have such a witness that God hears with swiftness, from praying we will not refrain. There was old father Noah, and ten thousand more, that witnessed that God heard them pray. There was Samuel, and Hannah, Paul, Silas, and Peter, and Daniel and Jonah we will say, that God, by a Spirit, or angel doth visit their souls and their bodies while praying, Shall we all go fainting while they go on praising, and glorify God in the flame? God grant us to inherit the same praying spirit, while we are journeying below, that when we cease from praying, we shall not cease praising, but round God’s white throne we shall bow, shall bow!

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Words of Institution

Communion of the People (Our Lord invites all who trust in him, and all who long to trust in him, to share in this meal which he has prepared. Communion will be received in the pew. Please hold the bread until everyone is served and hold the cup until everyone is served so that we can eat and drink together.)

Prayer after Communion Loving God, we thank you that you have fed us in this Sacrament, united us with Christ, and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet in your eternal kingdom. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

All Saints’ Day In the early church it became customary to remember the martyrs of the church in worship. When the list of martyrs became too great, a special day was set aside to remember their commitment to Christ, a commitment that led to their suffering and death for the sake of the gospel. Although different areas of the church celebrated the memory of these saints on different days at first, by A.D. 835 it became the custom to celebrate these martyrs on November 1. Today, All Saints’ day is celebrated on November 1 or the Sunday closest to November 1

North Church families who are affected in any way by war or disaster and for the men and women serving in the military.

“Overcoming Love Busters” 9:30 am in the Library

It is simply a reality that when you and your partner learn to behave in a manner that makes each other feel great and at the same time you learn to avoid (as much as possible) behaving toward each other in ways that make your partner unhappy, you both will not only be in love but your love will grow and grow. It will happen even in the ups and downs of marriage. “Overcoming Love Busters” will be addressing this very real need in our relationships. You will learn to identify and avoid the so called love busters, that is, your habits that cause your partner and you unhappiness. The teaching time together will enable you to overcome these destructive habits and to regain passion in your relationship. November 6: D. Annoying Behavior: Habits and activities that cause the other to be unhappy. If annoying behavior occurs, the husband and wife will follow a course of action that identifies annoying behavior, investigates the motives and causes of the behavior, keeps a record of its occurrences, and eliminates the behavior. November 13: E. Selfish Demands: Attempts to force the other to do something with implied threat of punishment if he/she refuses. If selfish demands occur, the husband and wife will follow a course of action that identifies selfish demands, investigates their causes, keeps a record of their occurrences, and replaces them with thoughtful requests. November 20: F. Dishonesty: Failure to reveal to the other correct information about emotional reactions, personal history, daily activities, and plans for the future. If dishonesty occurs, the husband and wife will follow a course of action that identifies dishonesty, investigates its causes, records its occurrences, and replaces it with emotional, historical, current, future, and complete honesty. Tour of the Buffalo Central Railroad Terminal

More than 40 North Church folks, on their good behavior, toured the old Buffalo railroad terminal on October 9. The Men’s Group organized the congregation-wide tour, Tony Link arranged particulars for the tour, and Don Boyer (our resident

photographer) took 94 photos. To view a sample of Don’s photos, a description of the event, and a photo slideshow on the church website, go to: www.northchurchwilliamsville.org/mens-group-archive.

Saturday, November 12 Men’s Breakfast

It is difficult to imagine, but a billion people on our planet do not have adequate and clean drinking water!! Charity: Water, founded by Scott Harrison, in its 5 year history, claims to have brought clear and safe water to 2 million people in developing nations around the world. For example, they are drilling freshwater wells, rainwater catchments, and sand filters for thousands of people in Africa. And they accomplish this with 100 percent of your donations going directly into their projects. Overhead is covered under a separate charity. Come for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. on November 12, and view a video-media presentation, with follow-up discussion, on how this organization is making a significant difference. And, while you are eating breakfast, imagine what would happen if you had to carry 80 pounds of water in yellow fuel cans for miles to your home, or dig with your children in sand for water, or line up at a well and wait 8 hours for a turn. Sign up dates are Sunday, October 30 and November 6. Please plan on joining us.

UB FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19 This is an "All-Church Activity" for you and your friends, it is sponsored by the Men's Group.

Non-property Committee folk, including women, are encouraged to join us for painting, cleaning, repairing, etc.

Scrap, Craft & Chat Fellowship Group

A mouthful of a name.

We gather for a time to work on our hobbies and tasks: sorting pictures, knitting,

scrapbooking, correspondence, etc., or just to sit and chat. As busy women, we save little

time for recreation in our lives. We share the hobbies we like while getting to know each

other. Our conversations are inspiring, uplifting, and supportive. Our small fellowship

group is comprised of a varying group of women: all ages are welcome. This small group

gathers once per month, on Sunday afternoons this year. Our upcoming meetings are on

Sunday, November 20th

, 3-6 p.m. and Sunday, December 11th

, 3-6 p.m. Consider sharing

your Sunday afternoon with some new and old friends at North Church. Friends are

always welcome.

FINANCIAL UPDATE AS OF OCTOBER 31ST You have received the letter from the Session as well as your giving statements, so you certainly know that this has been a difficult year for our church. Fortunately, we have sufficient undesignated reserves to cover the shortfall and to pay our bills. However, you know that the Session is very concerned about this problem. In anticipation for the Congregational Meeting on November 13th, I want to bring you up to date on where we stand at the end of October. There is good news. The letter and the statements have resulted in pledges becoming more current and even more important in some unexpected gifts from those who do not pledge. The income received for pledges for September and October is only $100 less than the amount budgeted for the 2 months and year-to-date we are now $13,500 behind in pledge income. The upturn in Non-pledge income is quite amazing; In September and October we have received nearly $5000 more than is budgeted for the 2 months. Your response has been very reassuring. October’s Financial Reports are still being worked on but it appears that we took in more money than we spent. Amazing for this year! However, there do remain problems. When the budget for 2012 was prepared we were overly optimistic about the costs for natural gas, electricity and for church maintenance. The expenses for these 3 areas have been over the budgeted amount all year. Largely because of expenses in these 3 areas, costs for Overhead and Maintenance are currently more than $9,000 over budget. This is not apt to improve by year-end. I want to thank you all on behalf of the Session, the Finance Committee and myself for your response to the letter and statements. It has been very gratifying.

Ann Eisenlord, Church Treasurer

NEWS FROM THE MISSION COMMITTEE Eight bags of winter coats have been delivered to Journey’s End!!!!! That means that many refugees will now have warm winter coats. Thank You so much. As of October 31st $2,252 has been received for the Peacemaking Offering. $563 of this will be sent to ECHO to support their efforts to provide water to families in third-world countries. It is not too late to add your gift to this amount, just write a check and put Peacemaking Offering on the Memo Line and put it in the offering plate. Thank you for this also. The generosity of this congregation is awesome.

Winter Coats Needed Journey’s End Resettlement Services is in immediate need of donations of new or gently used winter coats, hats, gloves and boots for men, women and children. They have refugees arriving from much warmer climates into a much colder climate than they are used to. Donations may be brought to North Church and put in the box in the Mission Corner.
