A Compelling Vision

TRANSCRIPT

2012 Ministry Plan 32 Blackshear Place Baptist Church

Dear Church Family,Earlier in the year, one of the older members of our churchfamily said to me, “Pastor, please pray for me; I feel like I’mlosing my vision.” Loss of vision is a frightening thing! Visionis something we never want to lose. Helen Keller stands out in American heroism as one who was unable to

see physically but was not blind when it came to courage, determination, and pressing forward against all odds. She once powerfully expressed thistruth: ”The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” Many think they can see, but they really don’t see. They have no

vision of the glory and greatness of God. They have no vision for thecalling and purpose of their lives. Families are blindly led by fathers withno vision. Young people chase after emptiness because there is nomentor to speak vision into their lives. Tragically, so many churches areled by pastors with no vision, and many churches have lost their vision. There’s hope for lost vision! A blind man once approached Jesus,

begging for help. Jesus said, “What do you want me to do?” The manreplied, “I want to see!” Have you asked God for vision? Once youreceive clear vision from God, it will consume your life. It will become acompelling vision. It is with great enthusiasm and anticipation that I present to you the

compelling vision for Blackshear Place as we begin the year 2012. As I soonbegin my eighth year as your pastor, I am more excited about the vision ofBlackshear Place than ever before. As you read through this publication, itis my prayer that you will not just see the vision, but also be compelled byit. Let's embrace together this God-sized vision for Blackshear Place.

Compelled,

Jeff Crook

God is up to something. We can sense His presence.

We sense that He wants more of us. His desire is to

take us to another level of commitment individually

and as a church. God not only longs for a relationship with us, He demands radical commitment from us. His heart beats forpeople—all people. God’s yearning is for His church to be aboutadjusting our lives and aligning our priorities to bring Him glory. This is realized in the way we go on mission, impact future gener-ations, expand our capacity for ministry, and embrace a God-sizedvision. To this end, we at Blackshear Place are COMPELLED! Wehave structured our ministry and budgets to accomplish thesetasks. We are COMPELLED…

/// To go global with the gospel/// To make a generational impact/// To increase our capacity for ministry/// To embrace a God-sized visionThis plan is different than those in years past. Typically, we presentseparate funding plans for capital projects, missions, and ministrybudgets. This is not a bad approach, but we feel that these arereally ONE plan. Capital projects, missions, and ministry cannotreally be separated. They are all a part of one church. They are allconnected to one vision. God is not divided in His call, and wemust be unified in our response. One ministry. One fund. Com-pelled by Him to go, to make, to increase, and to embrace. Willyou partner with us to make this happen? Are you COMPELLED?

The gospel is for the world. Estimates are that more than 3.5 billion unreached people on the planet have no access to the gospel. We are called to take the message to them — even to the ends of the earth. Investment in your church family enables us to go on mission through:

/// Adopting one of the more than 3,800 unreached, unengaged people groups

/// A targeted approach for outreach and church planting in a major North American city

/// Regional, national, and international mission trips/// Cooperative ministries through SBC causes, including gifts to

Lottie Moon and Annie Armstrong offerings for missions/// On-going missionary partnerships all over the world and help

for the poor in our own community

MEET DR. OWENSDr. Roger Owens has been a member at

Blackshear Place for 16 years. Part of the

way he uses his gifts is through a medical

clinic Blackshear Place supports called Good

News Clinics. Good News Clinics is the state's

largest totally free operation of its type. It was

started in 1993 and provides free medical and

dental care as well as prescription drugs to the

uninsured and under-insured. Dr. Owens and

Blackshear Place were a part of the clinic providing

$1.9 million worth of medical services, $1.3 million

in dental services, and $4.2 million worth of prescription

drugs last year. “God has blessed me, and with partners

in ministry, like Blackshear Place, we can do so much

for the poor in our community,” Dr. Owens said.

Our greatest mission field is among America’s youth. Because thisis true, there is no greater calling than passionately pursuingpreschoolers, children, middle schoolers, high schoolers, andcollege students with the message of the gospel. By giving generously, your church family is able to:

/// Minister to more than 1,500 preschoolers, children, students, and college-age young people on our campus each week

/// Provide an interactive preschool ministry that presents God’s Word in creative ways, such as Grandpa Obie’s Farm

/// Provide evangelistic children’s programming, such as Vacation Bible School and AWANA

/// Impact the minds, hearts, and lives of more than 400 middle school and high school students each year during Student Camp

/// Reach college-age young adults through weekly ministries, such as 7to9

/// Allow children and students to express their love for Jesus through Kidz Praise and Prosper Student Choir

/// Provide outreach to families through Upward Sports and Recreation Ministries

MEET WINWin had a passion to reach his friends. The

new student building gave him a reason to

invite Corey to church. Corey came to The

Venue and loved it. On the way home, Win asked

Corey about his relationship with the Lord. Corey

didn’t have one when he got into the car that night, but

before he got out of the car he had accepted Christ as

his Lord and Savior. It didn’t end there. Corey asked

his younger brother, Michael, if he would go the next

week to the student service in The Venue. Michael

agreed, and the next Wednesday Michael

accepted Christ. Win led Corey to the Lord;

then Corey brought his brother to Jesus. Both

brothers were baptized together in September.

From the time the building opened in

August through October, the student

ministry has baptized 42 new believers.

We’re a family, a community of believers who love and carefor one another. We laugh together; we cry together. We dolife together. As such, generosity within your church familyallows for the following ministries:

/// God-centered worship/// Adult Bible Fellowship groups/// Men’s and women’s Bible studies and ministries/// Keeping our church family connected through publications,

website, and social media/// Helping others become a part of our family through outreach

and assimilation ministries/// Our Hispanic church family/// Support and recovery ministries, such as Chance2,

that help with life’s hurts, habits, and hang-ups

MEET AMYAmy experienced a tragedy in her life three

years ago when her husband committed

suicide. Amy felt lost as a new single mom. She

also was diagnosed with cancer. These events

devastated her, and she turned to drugs and alcohol

to cope. In August 2010, Amy began attending a

Wednesday night small group for mothers, and

Blackshear Place stepped into her life in a significant

way. Amy opened up and received more love and

support than she ever imagined. Amy commented:

“People from my church bought me groceries. They

helped me get a place to live. They gave me money for

cancer doctor visits. Blackshear Place has been the

hands and heart of Jesus to me and my kids.” One year

later, Amy is giving back. She leads in AWANA on

Wednesdays and is a big part of the single moms ministry.

Investment in the ministries of Blackshear Place enables us topursue a vision greater than ourselves. It’s not just about build-ings and parking spaces; it’s about providing resources forkingdom advancement. This ministry category includes:

/// Another worship service at the 9:30 hour/// Opportunities to grow Bible Fellowship by opening creative

space both on-campus and off-campus/// Plans to expand current parking with an additional parking lot/// With God’s help and the generosity of His people, more than

$1 million toward debt reduction

NEW WORSHIP SERVICE

We must never lose sight of reaching out to those who are not here

yet. Each year hundreds of people come to our campus in

search of a deeper relationship with the Lord Jesus.

The 8:08 service continues to grow, and at 9:30

and 11:00 our services are consistently

running 70 percent of capacity. We

must always look for ways to

provide space for growth — a

place for those not here to worship

and study God’s Word. Beginning in

the spring of 2012, we will launch a

new service in The Venue at 9:30 am to

provide this space. Featuring live music

and Pastor Jeff preaching via simulcast,

this service will allow new worshippers to

experience Blackshear Place in a new way. This

is part of fulfilling our mandate — to go and

compel those not here to come in (Luke 14:23).
