The Must See ‘ems technology and product recognition program is a highlight feature of the Executive Outlook Conference, held the day before the major print industry trade shows, GRAPH EXPO and CONVERTING EXPO and PRINT® & CONVERTINGsm. The program is sponsored by the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC) and conducted independently by the PrintCom sm Consulting Group. What is a Must See 'em? GRAPH EXPO and CONVERTING EXPO 2006’s most compelling products and services, as selected by a panel of 15 leading industry consultants and trade magazine editors, are the Must See ‘ems for every exhibition attendee. Must See ’ems products and services represent the technology trends that will impact virtually all types of printers or converters. They represent the most compelling technology and FuturePrint trends in the printing and converting industries. These products and services are Must See ’ems recognition recipients. Worth-a-Look for Niche Markets Some products and services being exhibited at GRAPH EXPO and CONVERTING EXPO 2006 do not have as wide an application or broad impact on the industry as the Must See ’ems, but are nevertheless especially important for niche markets and selected groups of printers or converters. Some are technology demonstrations providing a hint of FuturePrint. Products and services embodying these characteristics are recommended to the showgoers as Worth-a-Looks.

Must See 'ems and their companion Worth-a-Look products were selected from the some 5,700 individual products shown at GRAPH EXPO and CONVERTING EXPO 2006 by over 600 exhibitors. Products were nominated in a reiterative process from supplier information and input from an independent selection committee. Nominees were reviewed and voted on by a 15 person committee in a secret ballot that required more than majority agreement that a product was compelling for a large number of exhibition attendees to achieve Must See 'ems recognition. Products identified as compelling but of importance to a more limited audience or that are promising but not yet fully developed or are in an uncertain early adoption stage have been identified as Worth-a-Looks. Encore Selections

2006 Encore Selections were made from products and technologies that were awarded Must See ’ems recognition in 2004 and/or 2005. Encore Must See ’ems were selected for continuing recognition because, although not new, they were are still compelling products or represent a growing technology adoption trend. Heidelberg USA Booth 1200 Prinect Color Solutions a 2005 product selection Workflow Prinect Color Solutions is a closed-loop color controlled workflow that is a combination of products, services and training. The objectives are to reduce makeready time and waste by providing a means of monitoring production. Specially designed targets called MiniSpotsTM are used to monitor the press and provide the data to enable fast reactions to changing conditions while the press is in production. MiniSpotsTM are automatically found and measured by Prinect Image Control. The measured values are analyzed in a new program called Prinect Quality Monitor and any variations vs. house standards are identified and reported directly to the prepress RIP (Prinect MetaDimension), where a new plate curve is recommended for use on an upcoming job. Heidelberg USA Booth 1200 Saphira Chemfree Thermal Plate a 2005 product selection Computer–to-Plate Digital Lithographic Plate The Saphira Chemfree plate is a negative working, offset aluminum plate that has been especially designed for the Suprasetter line of CtP devices using the latest chemistry free technology required for demanding print production requirements. This next generation plate is a traditional aluminum grained printing plate using a new coating technology – microspheres. Xerox Booth 1217 iGen3 Digital Production Press a 2004 and 2005 product selection Digital Production Press After four years in the market with progressive improvements made each year, Xerox’s customers have produced more than three billion pages on iGen3 presses. The presses produce offset-quality, revenue generating applications such as: full-color books, direct-mail pieces, and personalized marketing materials that increase effectiveness and response rates. Current applications include both short run static content and highly variable versioned and 1-to-1 very long run products. Production Technology and Product Selections In addition to these production technology categories, three technologies that were identified as important by the Must See ‘ems Selection Committee did not have any specific products selected. These technology and production groups are: ● JDF-enabled CIM ● Workflow ● Digital Wide Format Printing (Products, not Proofs) The importance of these production technologies is briefly reviewed with emphasis on the probability that these technologies will impact on many individual printers. JDF-Enabled CIM

Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) enabled by CIP4’s (International Cooperation for the Integration of Processes in Prepress, Press and Post press) Job Definition Format (JDF) specification was identified by the Must See ’ems Selection Committee as likely to be the most talked about and demonstrated individual technology as well as the most controversial at this year’s exhibition. Although many suppliers offer some form of CIM, for practical utilization in a printing plant, integrated implementation across multiple brands of equipment is usually required. This makes it difficult to single out individual unique products for recognition. In pre-show surveys printers indicated a high level of interest in automation but very little interest in the integration of islands of automation within their plants. Although no specific CIM or JDF products have been identified in the Must See ems program, some of the Must See ’ems products and other products at the show are claimed to be JDF-CIM compatible. Printers attending the exhibition are urged to seek out these products and learn about the potential of JDF-CIM. The JDF roadmap, offered by CIP4 at the entranceways to the exhibit floors, will help to identify those products. Workflow

By definition every production operation has a workflow. But not all workflows

provide the most effective and efficient operation. Many exhibitors emphasize a particular workflow but upon close examination are primarily selling a specific hardware or software product. Given that a workflow must encompass multiple products and

different functional operations, no specific workflow product was selected as a Must See ’em. However, understanding and selecting a “best fit” workflow that meets the requirements of an individual plant was selected as a Must See ’em --- and a Must Understand --- production technology.

Digital Wide Format Printing

Full color digital ink jet wide format printing equipment defined as printing an image 24” or wider will be found in abundance on the exhibit floor. This equipment is widely used in the printing industry to produce proofs and several products of this type are included in the Must See ‘ems color proofing section. Wide format equipment is also used primarily outside the traditional printing industry to produce a wide variety of end products. It is to produce saleable end products rather than proofing that the Must See ’ems Committee has selected digital wide format printing as a Must See ’ems technology category. The Committee observed that wide format printed products offer a profitable area of diversification for printers. The exhibit floor offers an unparalleled opportunity for commercial printers to become familiar with wide format technology and possible commercial printer produced applications. It is for these reasons that digital ink jet wide format color printing was selected as a Must See ’ems production technology. Technology Commentary

Management Information Systems (MIS) were identified by the Selection Committee as the product and technology area most important to a printer’s profitable survival. A prime consideration was the opinion that printers must operate as a business rather than by instinct. Also a factor in this selection was that MIS is a core component of JDF-enabled CIM, which was identified as a close second in importance.

Digital printing developments edged out conventional lithography improvements

as the next most important technology development area. Workflow enhancements with emphasis on the development of hybrid digital/offset workflow developments took fourth spot in the Committee’s prioritizing of technology. Other technology areas receiving multiple mentions included: computer-to-plate, mailing and fulfillment, unique coating, and wide format product printing (not proofing).

Booth 4229 PDF Print Engine Prepress Software The Adobe PDF Print Engine is new PDF printing software that enables printing systems to output Portable Document Format (PDF) files that include complex designs and effects quickly, accurately and consistently. The Varstar for sheetfed presses provides variable data UV coating at 8,000 8.25”Tdiecutting and converting system that can run up to 80 f/m. Varstar can apply a variable data coating in any configuration that canspecified in a color separated file. Flood, spot, textures, and variable glolevels can be achieved with a single fluid. The paper handling system is gripless, permitting the application of coating to the edge of the sheet. Special raised effects can be achieved with multi-layer coating known as fluid embossing. Portable DigDiagnostic The Portable Digital Register Analysis (DRA) is a press performance measurement and analysis system for determining the magnitude and direction of movement on a printing press at a company’s facility. It is, according to Mitsubishi, the only system that can identify the cause and location of complex mechanical problems and recommend appropriate solutions. It determines whether a probnature. It can be used as a diagnostic tool for any brand of press. Portable DRA consists of device-independent image analysis software,4,800 dpi flatbed scanner with automatic document feeder, powerful laptop computer and compact laser printer. Specially designed test plates contaicomputer-recognizable patches. Portable DRA measures different positions on test sheets to detect and calculate unit-to-unit, sheet-to-sheet movement on the gear side, operator side, lead edge, tail edge and infeed. Test sheets are cut into 8 1/2 x 11-inch sections. Portable DRA combines a depth-wise (down-the-stack) sequence and breadth-wise (across-the-sheet) method of gathering data, so the analysis is not limited by sheet size. The program handles any test sheet layout, provided the targets are arranginch grids. The system gathers information from a pattern of points on estack. A typical four-position analysis takes about 60 minutes.
