Copper Data Cablesfor IT cabling

Important Definitions:

ACR*Attenuation Cross-talk Ratio – the difference between attenuationand cross-talk attenuation. The ACR is used as a measure for the ratioof signal power to disturbance power.

Attenuation*The ratio between the power received at the end of a pair and thepower fed in at the beginning. Attenuation is given as a power ratioin logarithmic form (dB).

Channel*Channel or the entire transmission circuit without the plug-in connec-tors on the terminal devices

Characteristic Wave Impedance*This is defined as the ratio between voltage and current. It is thecharacteristic value for a homogeneous cable and characterises thetransmission system. In conjunction with the return loss, the charac-teristic wave impedance describes the transmission circuit.

Cross-talk Attenuation*A measure for the ratio between the power launched unintentionallyinto pair x from pair y and that fed into pair y.

Delay*Delay in signal transmission of a pair and thus restriction of thetransmission rate. The signal delay causes frequency-dependent signaldistortion.

FEXT*Far End Cross-talk. A distinction is made between Input-Output FEXT(I/O FEXT) and Equal Level FEXT (EL-FEXT).

Input Impedance*A frequency-dependent value corresponding to the characteristic waveimpedance which takes the inhomogeneities of the cable intoaccount. A transmission circuit can be described via this value.

NEXT*Near End Cross-talk.

Permanent LinkThe cable link installed between the patch panel and the socket (TA)

Power Sum (PS)*The power sum describes the sum total of all disturbance power laun-ched into a pair due to cross-talk. Power sum measurement comesvery close to application for Gigabit Ethernet, in which all pairs are inoperation. The Power Sum can be formed for ACR NEXT and FEXT.

Return Loss (RL)*This value describes the inhomogeneities in terms of the ratio bet-ween the forward electromagnetic wave and the return wave.

Skew*The difference between the delay times of two or more pairs. Theskew (delay) must be as small as possible for special applications, forexample Gigabit Ethernet.

With bandwidths of up to 450 MHz,

MegaLine 623 and 627 flex go far

beyond the performance of 250 MHz

required by the standard.

Trendsetting Performance

High bandwidths of up to 900 MHz,

an excellent NEXT and attenuation

response and an optimum cha-

racteristic wave impedance are a

few of the excellent features of

MegaLine 7 cables.

Of course, these are S/STP

cables with individual or overall

screening.

4

Cla

sses

The bodies responsible for standardisation are now taking the increasing requirements

with regard to the performance and flexibility of indoor cabling into account. Thus,

new additional features such as PS-NEXT, PS-ACR, FEXT, PS-FEXT and Skew are

being defined for the second edition of ISO/IEC 11801 and EN 50173. This will

be an essential step towards realising the high-speed ATM protocols with

155/622 Mbit/s and Gigabit Ethernet with 1000 Mbit/s.

Classes and categories

Good performance in

all categories

The performance of MegaLine

copper data cables offers the

user excellent reserve capacity

in all categories. With MegaLine

5, Category 5 cables with band-

widths of up to 250 MHz are

now available in a compact

design.

Screened performance

in Category 6

The new Category 6/Class E

allows the use of 4-pair S/UTP

cables with overall screening or

preferably of S/STP cables.

5

With a bandwidth which only

optical fibres seemed able to

achieve up to now, MegaLine 8 is

ideally suitable for multimedia

applications.

Multimedia

With MegaLine 8, Kerpen pre-

sents a copper data cable

which exceeds the require-

ments of the standards:

ELine 600 EC7 – the multimedia

cabling system.

ELine 600 EC7 is a trailblazing

cabling system for multimedia

applications. It forms the per-

fect symbiosis of copper data

cables and connection technolo-

gy by continuing the pimf

screening in the EC7 plug.

Conclusion: you’ve made a good

connection!

A cabling system is only as strong as its weakest link. This is why the performance

parameters and the quality of the cables are the primary values in the chain

of system components. If connection technology and cables have been ideally

matched, the overall cabling circuit provides maximum benefit, maximum

reserve capacity and maximum safety.

Trailblazer

With ELine RJ, Kerpen special offers

cabling systems with a modular

structure. All components are com-

patible, allow economical retro-

fitting from Class D to Class F.

Standard MegaLine cables offer

optimum protection against fire

and are environmentally sound as

they use halogen-free, flame-

retardant materials only.

Thanks to innovative insulation

methods such as foaming,

MegaLine cables combine maxi-

mum performance with low space

requirements. Their small outer

diameter, defined curvature radius

and low weight make them easy

to install.

• Flame-retardant according to

IEC 60332-3

• Reduced calorific values

• Smoke density according to

IEC 61034

• Low toxicity

• No dioxines

• Corrosivity according to IEC 60754-2

The MegaLine cables of all categories

and classes feature a convincing

transmission capacity and high

safety reserves.

With their double screening and the

pimf screening in the case of S/STP

cables, they offer an especially

high degree of electromagnetic

compatibility.

The demands made on cabling are varied and at times contradictory. MegaLine data

and communication cables made of copper combine high performance, universality

and economy. This standard of quality can only be achieved by means of an

integrated cable design.

23

With MegaLine 623 and

MegaLine 623 DS, there are

now cables of Category 6 Class E

which, with their bandwidth

of 450 MHz, have exceptional

reserve capacities.

MegaLine 6

MegaLine 6 was and is a develop-

ment with a vision. As early as 1991,

the first MegaLine 6 was presented

as an S/STP cable in 100 Ω technolo-

gy. This cable paved the way for the

success of all S/STP cables.

Ker

pen As an innovative, independent company in the cable industry, we develop, produce and

market cables according to German and international standards, factory specifications and

the wishes of the customer.

In the field of cables and systems for information technology, we are one of the market

leaders in Europe with the MegaLineTM product family. Besides copper data cables of

the MegaLineTM brand, our product portfolio in the IT field also includes the copper system

technology ELineTM. Since January 2000, we have been producing GigaLineTM optical fibre

cables to the highest possible standards at our factory in Stolberg. The FLineTM cabling

system for optical fibres rounds off the IT product portfolio. Data cables and systems from

Kerpen are used mainly for Local Area Networks in structured in-door cabling and in

Metropolitan Area Networks for the operating of city networks. For cables for measurement

and control technology and for plant engineering, Kerpen has an important position inter-

nationally. It manufactures and markets high-quality power cables, telecommunications

cables and special cables for mining, industry and energy providers.

All our activities aim at quality and customer satisfaction – these are the standards by

which we are judged. Committed and creative employees contribute their abilities to the

realisation of this goal. The quality management system certified according to DIN ISO

9001 in 1990 and the environmental management system certified according to DIN EN ISO

14001 in 1998 also exclusively meet the demands of our customers for economy, reliability

and flexibility. – We will continue to work in this direction in the future.
