15th EMBL PhD SYMPOSIUM
The race for survival from molecules to systemsCOMPETITION IN BIOLOGY
Scientific Outline of the Symposium
Entitled ‘Competition in Biology: The race for survival, from molecules
to systems’, the 15th EMBL PhD Symposium provides a novel
platform to explore the significance of competition in biochemistry
and biology.
Our conference is an exciting and unique opportunity for young
researchers from different disciplines to interact with leading scientists
in a stimulating and informal environment. The programme includes
lectures and panel discussions by prominent researchers from
around the world, as well as poster sessions and talks presented by
early stage researchers.
The Symposium offers a powerful networking opportunity for industry
to connect with researchers at all stages of their careers.

Session Overview
Day 1: Molecular Competition
The opening session will concentrate on the molecular mechanisms
for intra- and inter-cellular competition.
Day 2: Host versus Pathogen
The following second session will discuss infection biology and host-
pathogen interactions.
Day 3: Species Competition
The third and final session will focus on systemic levels of competition
from the context of microbial populations to a general approach on
the study of the evolution of cooperation.
