SUMMARY

The Orchestre Métropolitain (OM) is inviting young Canadian musicians between ages 7 and 17 to take part in the 3rd edition of the OMNI Competition. This year's event will be held virtually between May 28 and 30, 2021. Video recordings submitted by participants will be streamed on a public YouTube channel. The jury, made up of OM musicians and artistic partners, will select 30 finalists from the video submissions. The finalists will then move on to one last round of the competition, between June 26 and 27, 2021. If permitted by public health, the final round will be held live in front of the adjudicators. The location will be announced at a later date.

The OMNI Competition aims to promote young talent and instrumental musicianship. Through this friendly and positive competition, participants can grow and flourish as musicians. They will be invited to take part in various interactive activities with other participants and OM musicians ahead of the competition.

REGISTRATION The OMNI Competition is open to all young musicians between the ages of 7 and 17 as of April 28, 2021. Participants must register and submit a video recording by May 6, 2021 (for format details and specifications please refer to page 6 – Video Recording Guidelines). Participants may enter by completing the online form, available on the OM’s website in the OMNI Competition section of the Education page. Incomplete submissions will be disqualified.

By entering the competition, participants consent to have their video webcast on the OM’s YouTube channel and other various online platforms for the purposes of the OMNI Competition. For more information, please read Image Usage Rights - Consent and Waiver Section on page 10.

REGISTRATION FEES:

Registration fees* are $35 and may be paid by credit card when filling the online registration form.

Participants who signed up for the 2020 OMNI Competition (2nd edition) who didn’t claim their refund may register for this edition free of charge. You may indicate this on the registration form in the appropriate section.

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY:

To ensure equal access to the competition, the OM offers sponsorships to young musicians who need their registration fees covered in part or in full. To request a sponsorship, fill out the appropriate section of the form and explain why you require financial aid to participate in the competition.

CATEGORIES

Participants are divided into 9 categories according to instrument and age as of April 28, 2021:

The strings category includes participants who play the violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp and guitar. The winds category includes participants who play the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and tuba.

SUBMISSIONS

Participants must submit a video recording of their performance to enter the competition. They may play two or three pieces (recorded separately) in accordance with the time limits below. Participants may also submit one piece if it has two contrasting sections.

Participants must register and submit a video recording by May 6, 2021.

IMPORTANT: Only one piece per participant will be webcast for the Virtual OMNI Competition. At the time of registration, participants will specify which piece they would like the OM to webcast. However, the entirety of the performance will be evaluated by the jury.

OTHER DETAILS : Repeats: Pieces will be played without repeats. Only Da Capo al Coda repeats will be permitted.Sheet music: Participants in all categories must submit the sheet music in PDF format at registration. Accompaniment: Considering the current circumstances, piano accompaniment is not required.Memorization: Memorization is not mandatory.

VIDEO RECORDING GUIDELINES

VIDEO RECORDINGS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

• Each piece must be recorded as its own separate file.

• Videos must be filmed with a stationary camera with a horizontal format in high resolution (1920x1080 pixels, or a minimum of 1280x720 pixels, in MP4 or MOV files only).

• Participants must be in the centre of the image, so that their upper body, instrument and hands are completely visible.

• The video must be recorded exclusively for the OMNI Competition. Therefore, at the beginning of each video, the participant must introduce themself and state if it’s their first or second time participating in the competition.

• Videos cannot be edited.

• The name of each video file must contain the last name of the participant, as well as the title of the work (ex. Y.NézetSéguin_ConcertoMozart.mp4).

Following the deadline, the organizing committee will contact participants whose videos do not meet the criteria outlined above (Video Recording Guidelines). They will have until Friday, May 7, to submit a new recording. Videos which don't meet these criteria will not be webcast during the Virtual OMNI Competition.

VIRTUAL OMNI COMPETITION TIMELINE

Between May 28 and 30, 2021, the Orchestre Métropolitain will webcast all competition videos on its YouTube channel (one piece per participant). The performances will be grouped into their respective categories. Participants will receive the webcast schedule no later than May 25, 2021. Videos will be available on the OM YouTube channel after the live webcast for each category.

The names of the 30 finalists will be announced on May 30, 2021. They will be invited to take part in the final round (see page 8 – Final Round).

EVALUATION AND SELECTION PROCESS

Videos submitted by participants will be evaluated by the jury between May 1 and 18, 2021. Adjudicators will evaluate the musical and technical skills of participants according to the following criteria:

• Musicality• Sense of rhythm• Intonation• Dynamics• Adherence to score

Adjudicators will not take the quality of video recordings into account in the evaluation of the submitted videos. However, the recording must respect the Video Recording Guidelines listed on page 6, to be considered. Participants should refer to the guide found in the Appendix to ensure that the recording meets minimum quality standards for adjudication.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS

The names of the 30 finalists will be announced virtually on May 30, 2021. Each participant will then receive comments from the adjudicators and their score* by email. Scores will not be announced publicly. Scores are grouped into the following categories:

60% to 69% Satisfactory

FINAL ROUND

The 30 participants selected for the final round on June 26 and 27, 2021, will perform in a concert hall in front of the jury, if permitted by public health. The final round will be recorded and webcast on the OM website.

In the final round, participants will have to perform one piece with a maximum length of 10 minutes. This piece must not have been performed during the first round of the competition.

Winners will be announced the week of June 28, 2021.

Finalists who live outside of Montréal will have to pay for their own transportation and accommodations to compete in the final round.

* Adjudicators' decisions are final.

VIRTUAL ACTIVITIES

Virtual activities for participants will be held ahead of the OMNI Competition in May 2021 in order to enrich the competition experience for its participants. More details will be announced soon.

PRIZES

Thanks to the generosity of its partners, the 2021 OMNI Competition will award the following prizes:

• François Schubert Grand Prize: A $5,000 cash prize to the winner of the 15–17 year old category*

• Hydro-Québec Prize: A $2,000 cash prize to the winner of the 12–14 year old category*

• Yannick Nézet-Séguin Prize: A $2,000 cash prize to the winner of the 7–11 year old category

Other prizes will be announced later, particularly the Jury’s Choice Prize, given to winners in each instrument category, and the new Public’s Choice Prize. In the event of a tie, the jury reserves the right to divide a cash prize in half, with the exception of the François Schubert Grand Prize.

Each participant will receive a participation prize and constructive comments from the jury, made up of OM musicians and artistic partners.

* Winners will be selected in each instrument category.

IMAGE USAGE RIGHTS – CONSENT AND WAIVER

By entering the OMNI Competition, participants consent to the OM’s use of audio recordings, photographs or video recordings in which they appear for broadcasting and promotional purposes.

Participants grant irrevocable licence to the OM, its representatives, legatees, employees and any other authorized individual to use, distribute and broadcast images in which they appear and audio recordings of their voice on all existing and future platforms (digital and print) without compensation.

Participants waive the right to inspect or approve the final product in which their image and/or voice appears and releases the OM, its representatives, legatees, employees and any other authorized individuals from all liability related to the use of their image and/or voice.

The OM agrees to use images and voice recordings respectfully and with discretion.

TECHNICAL TIPS:

• If you don’t have a camera, use a phone or tablet, as opposed to a computer, to film your video.

• Make sure that the device is set to record in high resolution (full HD), which is at least 1920x1080 pixels, or a minimum of 1280x720 pixels.

• Make sure that there is no background noise or music playing.

• Use a tripod or support to ensure that the recording is stable. You can also ask someone to hold the phone.

• Place the camera at eye level, raised slightly above your face.

• Make sure that your face is well-lit. Use natural light if possible.

• Place your music stand in a way that it doesn’t hide your body or instrument.

SUBMITTING VIDEOS:

• Do not compress video files. It’s normal for video files to be large. For example, a one-minute video is usually 150 MB.

• When submitting your video, you may share the video files of each piece via the online registration form. Please use a file sharing program like WeTransfer or Dropbox permitting the download of your performance. Videos sent via online streaming platforms like YouTube or Vimeo will not be accepted.
