witH autumn well and truly set in, here are some jobs to get you out and about in the

garden on some hopefully glorious sunny days.

All your bulbs should now be planted apart from the tulips which should be left until november to go in due to the possibility of ‘tulip blight.’ If you can still get hold of them, Crocus vernus ‘Vanguard’ is a particularly good crocus for planting in lawns as advised by Joseph Atkins, Head Gardener at Aberglasney. He uses this taller cultivar in the lawns within the Cloister Garden there as it is 2 weeks earlier than the other vernus forms. This means that the grass can be cut that much sooner.

On dry, sunny days seed can be collected from many plants – trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs. If still slightly damp when collected, I put them in old envelopes (with name and date of collection) and hang them up to dry slowly in the house. Don’t put them on top of the radiators, this will reduce their viability considerably. now is a good time to sow hardy annual and bulb seeds e.g. poached egg plant (Limnanthes douglasii), sweet peas (if you can keep the mice from eating them, though a wire mesh cover may help) and Camassias. Get hold of a module tray, fill with good quality multipurpose compost, sow the seed thinly on top, cover with a very light layer of either potting bark or horticultural grit and place outside in a sheltered, shady undisturbed spot. These should all germinate next spring. As they were sown in modules they

will not need pricking out which is a huge labour saving. each module/plug can be potted on to a 9cm pot and planted out in the garden when fully rooted. The bulb seedlings are best left undisturbed for a couple of years before potting on. If they look like they are running out of growth in late spring/early summer give a very light liquid fertiliser feed.

On a dry day remove all the tomato plants from your greenhouse to free up room for plants needing winter protection.

Tidy up the greenhouse and install bubble insulation. putting up the bubble insulation is much easier if there are two of you. I do wish someone would design a better method of attaching the bubble insulation to the greenhouse walls and roof! ensure your greenhouse heater (if

used) is in good working order. When all is ready, start putting in your half hardy plants that you wish to save e.g. salvias, Mimulus guttatus, pelargoniums, Agaves.

Ventilate the greenhouse well, only shutting down when temperatures are forecast to drop below 5oC.

Botrytis can quickly take off and destroy plants if there is poor air movement. pick off and remove all infected leaves and flower heads immediately to stop diseases spreading.

Collect colourful Acer leaves to make a collage.

Look out for next month’s tips on tree and shrub planting.

on top of any family members or friends’ birthdays you may be celebrating over the next

three months there are plenty of other reasons to party at this time of year. before we know it the children will be finishing school for the half term break and then it will be Hallowe’en, closely followed by Bonfire Night.

If you are intending to put on parties for either or both of these events then it is a good idea to get ahead by doing some planning and where possible even preparation over the next few weeks. I am sure that many of you want to make your parties special and memorable and it is often the little details and personal touches that help that. This makes it important that you plan carefully to ensure you have thought about every aspect of the party. Here are 5 easy points to consider in party planning:• Plan in advance• Tailor the party to the attending age groups• Decorate!• Food and snacks• Games and activities

so with that in mind I hope that the ideas on these pages may help with your organisation. If you enjoy being creative rather than buying everything from a party shop, there are also a few ideas to help you get started with some welcoming decorations and some craft based activities the children can help with both before the party and on the day.

Hallowe’en parties have grown in popularity a great deal in recent years and this must be because they can just be

such fun. The planning and preparation must include giving thought and time to preparing decorations and props, designing a menu of snacks and food and deciding on games and activities. Depending on the age group you are catering for the organisation may vary considerably, from focusing on the fun aspect for younger children to the bizarre and more scary aspects for the bigger children.

Focusing on colour themes can really help with party planning and black and orange are obvious choices for Hallowe’en. If you fancy having a go at making your own welcome banners keep images simple so that they are easy to draw and colour like a simple pumpkin theme. Another simple way of creating messages are in the use of flag style bunting that can be strung up outside or inside the house. A letter on each flag can spell out any Hallowe’en themed words such as “spooky”, “witches- this way” etc

Here are some ideas that younger children may enjoy. Hands and feet are a big part of some fun ideas for making Hallowe’en images. They could be made before the party and used as part of your decoration or as party activities.

preparation with plastic sheeting on the floor is

advisable for making these spooky ghost feet, made from paint foot prints.

place your child’s hands on some thin card and draw round them. Two hands drawn round and cut out can also be used in for example making the wings on a bat image with a circular shape or paper plate used for the bat’s body.

Happy HalloweenLet‘s Party. . .

Young or old nearly everyone loves Bonfire night and it is another great reason for inviting friends and family round for a night of sparklers, fireworks and tasty party treats.

One of the fun things you and the children can create for november 5th if you’re intending to have a bonfire is the guy to burn. This is something you can start preparing for now by collecting old clothes to dress the guy in, old newspaper to stuff inside the clothes, tights make a great head with maybe a paper bag over it so you can draw on facial features, and gloves make good hands.

Again decorations in the party theme help to create a memorable setting. If you’re using candles in votives or jars consider colour themes or paint letters spelling out firework words on each glass. Models of giant fireworks are fun to make and very eye-catching. A variety of big boxes may prove to come in handy and an old bicycle wheel would make an excellent base for a Catherine Wheel. Cylinders can easily be made as a start for rockets from large sheets of card curled round and stapled. On a smaller scale toilet rolls are a great base for rocket

decorations. Use tissue paper streamers to make them appear as if they are shooting through the sky.

As with Hallowe’en follow colour themes; yellow, red and orange tissue, paper or card can be used to create flame effects to decorate party tables etc Large silver or glittery stars cut out and

hung up bunting style are also effective. An old but effective picture idea (I actually remember doing this when I was at school!) is to colour a piece of paper in different coloured wax crayons, completely cover up the colours with black crayon, then scratch out some of the black to create your picture.

The cookie decorating theme can be extended for a Bonfire Party too, as plenty of bright colours of icing and sprinkles can

create some great firework images.

Celebrating Bonfire Night this year with some fun “firework” and bonfire crafts for the children can be just as enjoyable for some, as often children enjoy the idea of fireworks more than the actual loud and possibly slightly scary fireworks themselves! And if the

worst comes to the worst and poor weather prohibits going outside to enjoy a firework display, you can enjoy some indoor fun with some of your own crafty ideas!

paper plates are also extremely useful for so many different craft activities as can be seen on the paper plate witch which also uses hands, this time to create hair!

Obviously having real pumpkin lanterns or decorated pumpkins can help create your Hallowe’en atmosphere but children will also have fun making their own pumpkin lantern plate, and it is actually a lot easier than digging out pumpkin flesh.

A very popular party activity is cake or

biscuit decorating so why not bake some large round cookies in advance. Then at the party supply the children with suitably coloured tubes of icing and some small jelly sweets such as wiggly “worms” and strings of liquorice and let them decorate their cookies in Hallowe’en themes. They can then take them home in named black and orange party bags created and decorated with witchy, bat or pumpkin pictures.

669 years ago in 1346 the famous longbowmen of Llantrisant fought for the “Black prince” of Wales at Crecy, defeating the King of Bohemia and claiming his emblem of three ostrich feathers which has been adopted by every prince since.

Those gallant Welshmen, known as the “Black Army” returned to their hilltop home and were awarded the freedom of the ancient borough, an honour that the Freemen of Llantrisant continue to uphold despite the passing of the centuries.

now Llantrisant Community Council with the support of the Llantrisant Male Choir and Llantrisant Town Trust, have organised an official twinning with Crecy en ponthieu in northern France.

On st David’s Day 2015, 4 Councillors from Crecy came to Llantrisant with their families to sign a Charter of Friendship between the two towns. This August a group of representatives from the Community Council, Town Trust and Male Choir attended a medieval festival in Crecy to strengthen the bond between the two towns. It is hoped that the Charter will encourage links between groups in the respective towns. Already the explorer scouts are hoping to go on camp to the area next summer and do some joint activities with their French counterparts.

don’t groan but when i started writing this article i checked one of those online countdown

websites and there it was, in black and white “100 days till christmas”. eek! And then it got worse- 100 days equates to 0.279 years, 3.35 months, 14.37 weeks etc etc.

By the time you read this there will probably only be around 75 or fewer days left….. With this daunting thought that the big festive season is really not that far away here are some tips to help you save money and extend your budget.

1. When it comes to buying presents make lists of who you need to buy for and some ideas if pos-sible. This way you won’t end up buying extra items “just in case”.

2. Decide on how much you are buying as presents and your budget and endeavour to keep to it, especially when buying for the children. It’s so easy to get carried away with so many lovely items in the shops.

3. To help stretch the present budget and if you feel creative you could always try making some gifts. some ideas on thoughtful gifts are in next month’s magazine.

4. By thinking ahead a little about food re-quirements (more about this in later editions too) you can start buying a couple of items for the Christmas store cupboard each week looking for those that are on special offers. supermarkets constantly have three for two, or BOGOF offers. As long as “use by” dates are appropriate this helps spread the cost of Christmas food.

5. Alongside special offers there are often special Christmas events in shops to attend, eg Boots usually have special open evenings for

loyalty card holders where you gain extra points on certain spends which then enables you to buy more gifts.

6. Loyalty cards and points come into their own at this time of year. some shops have special “double your points” events whilst I have always found that if you save up the points you earn it can amount to a decent amount to spend at Christmas. Make sure that if you have vouchers related to loyalty cards you use them by the expiry date.

7. At our house we have already received several gift type catalogues. My advice with

these is that rather than just looking through and thinking how lovely it looks as I tend to do, is to pay more attention and take advantage of what can be good half price offers for early ordering.

8. Thinking about being “early” if you’re thinking of going to shows, restaurants etc it may be worth looking for those that offer early

booking discounts.

9. I have found out recently that it is often cheaper to have parcels couriered rather than traditional post so this is worth considering if you have gifts to send.

10. My last tip is one that I definitely need to pay attention to and it is to ensure that Christmas cards that need posting are written in plenty of time for second class postage rather than only just making it with first class stamps! An alternative can be local delivery services such as the scouts.

I hope these tips will help with your Christmas planning and budgeting – if all else fails you could enter a competition or enter one of those feedback surveys on shop receipts- someone must win the £250 prizes!!!

waLes’ only truly regional male choir was formed in 1982 to undertake a tour of the eastern

united states as a result of welsh-american promoters witnessing a royal albert Hall ‘1,000 Voices’ concert.

performing with leading symphony orchestras under the baton of the BBC’s Alun John and patronage of HRH The prince of Wales, the 500 plus choristers from 42 different choirs received rave reviews resulting from big concerts in pittsburgh, Baltimore, Washington, new York and finally Buffalo, all witnessing the Welsh Male Voice tradition at its best.

success and enjoyment in the 1983 tour had been so great that back home at the ‘winding-up’ meeting no fewer than 153 choristers (the number present!) unanimously voted to continue. since then a further 19 Tours have taken place – UsA and Canada with 3 each plus France, Gibraltar, eastern europe, Australia, together with no fewer than 7 Commemorative Tours to the WWI and WWII Battlefields of Flanders and normandy. performing often before Royalty, Government Leaders and more importantly Veterans, the choir has even travelled as far as Monaco for a one-off concert in the International sporting Club, Monaco and cruised the Baltic with shore based concerts in Russia, estonia, and norway – next year it will be the norwegian Fjords and Bergen!

Regular concerts in the UK have been included since the late ‘80s – st. Davids Day Celebration Concerts nearly always being performed outside Wales, for example in Cheltenham Town Hall, Hereford Cathedral, or Oxford Town Hall, with Wantage proving popular of late . The first Annual Concert supported by Core sponsor Texaco took place in st. David’s Hall, Cardiff in 1987 and Côr Meibion De Cymru, now sponsored by that company’s successor at Pembroke Refinery, Valero, has recently performed their 28th Annual Concert at st. David’s Cathedral, pembrokeshire. (There was no Concert last year as The south Wales Male Choir was in

Flanders honouring the memory of the British expeditionary Force and their sacrifice 100 years ago.)

The choir has been hugely fortunate to have secured over the years Conductors and Accompanists of note. Alun John was followed by John samuel and Alec Brooks, with a major change coming about with the appointment of Haydn James in 1999 who demanded no music copies on stage – much to the Committee delight – meaning the quality of performance improved even more! D. Eifion Thomas further enhanced Haydn’s direction to the point that when the first lady Musical Director of CMDC, elaine Robins took over, CMDC was enjoying their music more and more. Competition success came about under elaine’s guidance and amazingly, piano accompaniment has remained through the choirs history with a Ferndale ‘Davies’ – originally the late Bryan and since 1993 with daughter sian. Today the Music Team has been enlarged to include Deputy Accompanist Juliet Rossiter and Cardiff Group Conductor Jo Herco-Thomas acting as Deputy to elaine Robins.

Jo and the Cardiff Rehearsal Group is ably supported at the piano by Karen sampson and they are very keen to increase CMDC membership in their area. Fairwater Conservative Club provides an excellent venue with plenty of car-parking and easy access for their regular Tuesday evening rehearsals, with choristers travelling in from not just Cardiff but also as far as Bristol in the east and the Vale in the west. every three weeks all the practice groups – Cardiff, Resolven, Towy Valley, narberth and the ‘exiles’ in Wantage meet for a full choir rehearsal on a sunday in Cwmavon Community Centre - with all choristers well looked after by the Ladies of CMDC support Group!

new members will be assured of a big welcome and providing a high degree of choral and stage discipline is maintained, then many happy and fulfilling years can lie ahead. Touring abroad is of great importance - some stalwarts have sung with The south Wales Male Choir since America in 1983 - and they are still going strong! Founding piano accompanist Bryan Davies said “Music is a serious business, but it’s got to be fun”. With us it is!

If you want to know more, come along to our rehearsal at Fairwater Conservative Club on Tuesday 20th October at 6.30pm or otherwise please telephone our Cardiff Group Contact don surridge on 01446 735437.

october is breast cancer awareness month. with that in mind, we spoke

to two Nuffield health specialist consultants; Mr sumit Goyal, consultant oncoplastic surgeon and dr Philippa young, consultant radiologist, who operate as part of a team, in order to alert people about the signs and symptoms of the common condition of breast cancer, which affects at least one in nine women.

Mr sumit Goyal explains, “Whilst breast cancer is common – the good news is, that if it is picked up in good time, then it is treatable and early diagnosis gives the best chance of a good outcome.”

Dr philippa Young went on to explain the symptoms, “There are a range of symptoms that women need to be aware of and go to their Gp with; any lumps in the breast or puckering of the skin, blood stained discharge from the nipple or recent inversion, where the nipple goes inwards, or any difference in the firmness or feeling when comparing one breast with the other. even with these symptoms however, once checked, only 10 – 15% will have breast cancer. The Gp will refer for a proper assessment by specialists at a dedicated centre which will include a clinical examination, as well as digital mammography or ultrasound and if

needed a biopsy. Following guidance from the national Institute for Health and Care excellence (nICe), all of these tests can be arranged at the pleasantly situated Nuffield Health Bay Hospital and are provided at the consultation as a ‘one stop shop’ in a timely and safe manner. If an MRI scan is needed, it too can be carried out at our facility”.

Mr Goyal reassured, “If cancer is detected, treatment can be planned straight away, as soon as an accurate diagnosis is confirmed. The majority of patients will require an operation, which will occur within four weeks and 90% can be discharged from the Nuffield Health Vale hospital the next day. In addition to surgery, depending on the nature of the cancer, additional treatments such as chemotherapy and, or radiotherapy are usually required.”

On Thursday 15 October, Mr sumit Goyal and Dr philippa Young will be hosting a workshop on diagnosing breast cancer. This workshop will open the day of talks at the Nuffield Health Gp study Day at Cardiff City stadium. It is designed to assist Gps

by updating on advances in the management of breast cancer and the latest guidelines from nICe on the assessment of breast cancer symptoms.

If you have any concerns or questions, do get in touch right away. To make an appointment at Nuffield Health, just ring 029 2083 6714.
