The purpose of this report is to facilitate an increased awareness by the addictions field of demonstration projects funding both research and community treatment and prevention initiatives in each state, plus Puerto Rico and the U. S. Virgin Islands. The information contained in this report was obtained from the following funding organizations:

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJ) National Institute of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (NIAAA) National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) United States Department of Justice (USDJ) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

Funded research projects are referred to here as Knowledge Development grants, where studies range from basic neuroscience to investigations of service effectiveness. Community-based demonstrations of innovative prevention and treatment models are labeled Knowledge Application grants. It is hoped that publishing the existence of both current Knowledge Development and Application projects will generate curiosity about research being conducted within the region and precipitate more interest in sharing information between researchers and community practitioners. Ultimately, we hope that researchers and service providers will begin to collaborate in the submission of research applications that are responsive to the needs of the treatment and prevention communities. Our strategy for gathering the data summarized in this listing was straightforward. We first determined which funding sources to survey, selecting those that fund the largest number of knowledge development and application grants in the region. Five funding sources were selected. Grants expiring before December 31, 2002 were not included in this listing. The Web site has two reports available for every state: Awards and Summary.

Selecting a states Awards report on the left will give you a list of every ATOD KDA grant award in that state from all five funders.

Selecting a states Summary report on the right will give you a statistical summary of the grant awards in that state.
