Our Church History in 1992

The big headline in national news in 1992 was a three-way run for the presidency byincumbent George H.W. Bush , Bill Clinton and Ross Perot. Clinton won. After 30 years,Johnny Carson retired and Jay Leno took his place as host of the Tonight Show. Minnesota’sMall of America opened as the largest shopping center in the United States and Microsoft re-leased Windows 3.1.

Our senior pastor was Wilmore Eva and associates were Dan Stevens, pastor forchildren and young adults, and Greg Taylor, pastor for youth. Hazel Burns, after serving asa volunteer on the staff, was hired half-time as the pastor for women’s ministry and outreach.Jerry Taylor was minister of music. Gail Price, the office manager, was happy to welcomeVangy Lundstrom as the new publishing secretary. Gail also wrote an article in Intercomthanking office volunteers Helen Christenson, Jackie Bylsma, Ellamae Skahen, MarjSeasly, and Edna Bekowies for their faithful support in the church office. Jeannette Lar-son helped in the church office during the summer.

Responding to a call from the Ohio Conference for all churches to hold a day of fastingand prayer in January, Kettering launched a 50-Day Adventure on the theme, “The Family GodWants Us to Be.” A new Sabbath School class for collegians was started in L2 under the direc-tion of Dave Evans. The bleachers in the Earliteen Room, which had been there for 13 years(designed by Voya Vitorovich, constructed by Horace Kelley and Carl Williams, decoratedby Crystal Willett) were sacrificed to make room for the new library. A wall was erected toform a room (S2) down the south hallway. The church library opened officially on October 24.

In February Pastors Stevens & Greg Taylor led a tour of the Holy Land and Egypt;the group of about 30 were met upon landing in Tel Aviv with the news that Jerusalem wasexperiencing a rare snow storm. No one had packed for the 12 inches of snow, so they woreplastic bags over their shoes to negotiate the wet streets.

Vacation Bible School in July was extra special. On the theme of touring the Holy Landwith “Passport to the Promised Land,” it included beautifully decorated sets by John Schultzand Dan Stevens of a carpenter’s shop in Nazareth, a marketplace in Jerusalem, a shepherd’shome in Bethlehem, Mary & Martha’s home in Bethany, and a synagogue in Capernaum.

Members in the mission field that year were Kent & Joan Van Arsdell (Singapore),May Yuan (China) and Michael & Lois Rose (France). After their retirement, Ernest andBonnie Neufeld left for mission service in Thailand for 2 years.

Our Church History in 1992 (continued)In April the house owned by the hospital that the Community Service Center used, was

gutted by a fire; although it was soon repaired, it provided a strong incentive to continue plansfor the Good Neighbor House.

Socials in the church were mainly provided by the Kettering Adult Fellowship group. There was a progressive party, a banana split night and frequent campouts to state parks. InSeptember the church enjoyed the corn roast sponsored by the deacons. An all-church picnicwith featured animals from the Cincinnati Zoo, was sponsored by the Family Life Committee.

Noted concerts during the year was a recital of masterworks for organ and violin byJerry Taylor and Peter Ciaschini. The church choir sang Mendelssohn’s “ , completewith an altar, and was narrated by Will Eva. A Handbell Festival featuring 6 bell choirs fromOhio and Indiana was organized by Vic Kostenko.

In October pastor Greg Taylor ran the Columbus Marathon which qualified him for theBoston Marathon the next year. Kettering College of Medical Arts celebrated its 25th anniversaryon November 14 and 15.

There were eight weddings in the church that year; of note are Darlene Boyer toCraig Wallace, March 15, Shannon Kimberlin to Mark Velasco, August 9, and CheriEytcheson to Steve Brockman, September 20. They are still members here. Members thatjoined in 1992 that are still here are Jill Doster Evans, Craig & Marcia Waters, Jill Conkle,Dusty Deal, April Dutton, Mel Lawson, Tim & Susan Willsey, Jeff Willsey, TerriWillsey and Vanessa Waters. 1992 saw the birth of Matt Webster, Juli and TiffanyJohnson and Nick DeFranco.
