SOMEONE RATHER CHEEKILY suggested to me the other day that my Ginetta G26,which I’m running for the CKC £500 Challenge, would be eligible for the government’smuch vaunted scrappage scheme. What a cheek! Not onlyis my car a future kit car classic (honest!) but thiswhole so-called incentive makes me furious.Mainstream manufacturers arealready offering hugediscounts on new cars,and I can’t see themoffering an additional£1000 off (as their part of the£2000 incentive) to further enticebuyers. They’ll just snip £1000 off theexisting discount they were offering so that, in effect,the customer is paying exactly the same as they would before the scheme. I’m alsoirritated by the sheer irresponsibility of encouraging people to borrow money they can’tafford. Most people running around in an old clapper are doing so because they eitherdon’t want a new car or can’t afford one. Encouraging them to take out loans on themisguided pretence that they are getting a bargain is simply not right. And this isbefore we look at all the other arguments against the scheme, such as the loss of oldercars that are perfectly serviceable etc, etc. And as for scrapping a kit car! Don’t evenget me started.

Of course, kit car manufacturers, like their mainstream counterparts, could also dowith a boost in sales. Could those offering turnkey cars cash in on the government’snew scheme? Now there’s a thought.

You’ll read elsewhere in this issue that in addition to the Ginetta that currently resides onmy front drive/garden, and the Adrenaline Murtaya that’s in the garage, I’ve actually goneout and spent my own money on a kit car. The result is a ten-year-old CC Cyclone is nowin my possession. Long-standing readers will know that I’ve owned not one, but two ofthese kit cars before but, try as I might, I can’t seem to get them out of my system.

It’s a brilliant feeling having my own car again, because after all the driving pleasurethat it gives, part of my enjoyment comes from all the planning for futureimprovements. Whether it’s something as seemingly dull as replacing some rubberweather seals, or as exciting as choosing new carpets and a paint scheme, this is partof what makes owning a kit car such fun – you can make it yours in a way that’s almostimpossible with either a classic or modern crumplezone.

And my car needs some work... not only a paintjob, but also a lot of general tidyingafter several years effectively off the road. Indeed, my biggest problem is going to bedeciding what to attack first, although nothing will be allowed to get in my way ofmaximum driving pleasure over the next few summer months. Bring it on!

IF NOTHING ELSE, the Magnum427 must surely have the best name ofany UK Cobra replica. Everything itconjures up suggests brute force. Butthe company itself has always beensomething of an enigma. Establishedway back in 1986, it’s one of theindustry’s old guard when it comes tofake snakes, but it has never been at theforefront of the scene, always seeminglyhappy to remain in the shadows, with ahandful of customers each yearsearching out its Cotswold base.

The company was originally startedby ex aircraft engineer, Mike Broad, andhe approached the familiar silhouettefrom a very different angle to most othersin the market. It meant the Magnum 427had a genuine square and round tubespaceframe chassis and performancedouble wishbone suspension allied tomany other bespoke items. A track focuswas the central reason behind theconcept, although the reality has beenthat virtually all Magnums have beenroad cars first, with trackday use a veryreal option.

But in 2007 Mike decided it was timeto pass the project on to a new owner

and it was because of an advert heplaced on a business website, that CraigStewart came across it. He certainlywasn’t looking to buy a car company,but his son, Robin, was looking for anew career challenge and, as chancewould have it, was researching theCobra replica market, with a view tobuilding a car.

The closer that Robin and Craiglooked at the Magnum, the more theybegan to seriously consider developingRobin’s interest in building a car, into agenuine business opportunity. With abackground in IT and the motor trade,Robin had two valuable skills to bring tothe table, while Craig has been a life-long engineer. The hobby was just aboutto get rather more serious.

As well as Magnum being available tobuy, there was little question that theproduct itself seemed to present anattractive proposition, with itsaccomplished chassis and suspensionpackage and low slung aggressive roadpresence helping to distinguish this as aserious contender within an otherwisetough marketplace.

THE ULTIMA GTR is a living kit carlegend. The tally of performance recordsit has chalked up for road-going carsshames many more expensive supercars,yet it remains possible for you or me tobuild one at home. Think about whatthat means for a moment. Spec yourUltima correctly, and the car you build inyour garage will leave a Bugatti Veyronin its wake. It’s a graphic illustration ofthe innovation and achievement thisindustry is capable of.

The story begins back in 1983 when aman by the name of Lee Noble set up acompany called Noble Motorsport andoffered the Ultima, which the brochuredescribed as “the ultimate mid-enginedroad going sports car.” It had a squaretube spaceframe chassis, a Renault 30 V6engine and transaxle, and also used theFrench car’s front uprights and brakes atthe back. Elsewhere, the car used FordCortina uprights, brakes and steering andthe radiator from an Austin Princess.

This original version of the car wasshort lived as, a year after its launch, theMk2 arrived. It still looked the same, butthe Renault suspension had beenreplaced with Noble’s own alloy uprightsand the brakes changed to Lancia Betasourced components. Only 13 Mk1 andMk2s were built, the Gulf liveried carhere being the third Mk2 produced.

The first customer to buy a Mk2was Ted Marlow, who fitted a 3.1-litreFord Essex V6 engine. He raced hiscar in a championship sponsored by hisown civil engineering company, andquickly redesigned his car to accept aChevy V8 engine.

In the late 1980s, Noblecommissioned aluminium rollingspecialist Shapecraft to redesign theUltima’s body. The new design wascreated in aluminium from which amould was taken to produce bodies inGRP. The Mk3 was born. While it wasstill based on Renault donor engines, itsappearance is more or less what we’drecognise as an Ultima today. At aroundthe same time, Lee Noble built a Spyderprototype as a race car.

The Chevy engine became a popularupgrade amongst Mk3 owners, and thecars soon claimed lap records at circuitsall over the UK. The consequence wasthat Ultimas were effectively bannedfrom motorsport. By 1992, Ultima hadsold 13 Mk3s, the final two of whichwent to McLaren to be used asdevelopment mules for the F1 road carproject. Ted Marlow bought the rights,jigs and moulds to the obsolete Mk2and Mk3, and set up Ultima Sports withhis son Richard.

The new heads are cast in LM25TF from new tooling. They are available from stock as a fully machined head to Sprint spec which includes cam caps, cam cap studs, fi tted hardened valve seats and Colisbro valve guides.

Additional modifi cations to higher specs and fully built heads are available on request to customers own specifi cations.

All combustion chambers and ports are CNC machined. Since the heads are cast using modern materials and technology, there is no need for tappet sleeves or cam bearings – both cams and tappets run directly in the head as you would expect on a modern engine.
