Flavonoids are water soluble polyphenolic molecules

    containing 15 carbon atoms.

Two benzene ring joined by a liner three carbon chain

flavonoids belong to the polyphenol family.

The flavonoids consist of 6 major subgroups:chalcone, flavone, flavonol, flavanone, anthocyaninsand isoflavonoids

FlavonesThese are generally found in herbaceous families

    E.g. umbelliferae , compositae etc.

The most abundant flavonoid is quercetin which has the two

hydroxyl groups while fisetin , have only one hydroxyl group inring luteolin and ,Apigenin are the example of flavones.

    Isoflavones Isoflavones use the 3-phenylchromen-4-one

Isoflavones are found in the heart wood of species ofprunus (black cherry ) and in species of iris . And are

particularly abundant in the leguminosae. Examples:- genistein , Diadzein.

Flavanone The flavanone are a type of flavonoid

Only hydroxylated flavanone are found in nature andexample are Butin, Hesperetin, Hesperidin, Naringinetc .

Flavonol Flavonol are a class of flavonoid that have the 3-hydroxyflavone (3-hydroxy-2-phenylchromen-4-

one) Flavonols are present in a wide variety of fruits and

    vegetables

Examples:-Kaempferol occur in senna , Fisetin etc.

Anthocyanins Anthocyanins are water soluble vacuolar pigments

that may appear red, purple, or blue according to pH.

Anthocyanins occur in all tissues of higher plants,

including leaves, stems, roots, flowers, and fruits. Anthocyanins are derivatives of anthocyanidins

which are suger free pigment .

Example:- red wine, orange, black raspberry, cherry,

    etc .

Role of flavonoidFlavonoids are the most important plant

pigments for flower coloration producing yellow orred/blue pigmentation in petals designed toattract pollinator animals.

Flavonoids (both flavonols and flavanols) are mostcommonly known for their antioxidant activity.

The DNA changes were increased by treatment withflavonoids in cultured blood stem cells
