Learning outcomes

•  Understand how to prepare and apply waterborne and solventborne coatings by brush and roller, in line with manufacturers' instructions, to complex areas.

•  Understand components of paint

Components of paint What is paint?

Paint is a liquid pigment which – after drying – converts into a solid paint film.

Components of paint

Qualities of paint required to produce a successful finish:

•  Smoothness

•  Correct viscosity

•  Adhesive properties

•  Opacity

Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating Components of paint Paints consist of three main parts: •  Pigment (solid) provides the colour, opacity and the body of the

paint.

•  Binder (resin) provides durability, flexibility and adhesion.

•  Solvent (thinner) allows the paint to flow.

Pigments

•  Commonly used pigments are red and yellow iron oxide, titanium dioxide and carbon black.

•  Rust inhibitive pigments are red lead, zinc chromate and zinc oxide.

Binders Resin is the component that binds the pigment together. It is also the film former (the dry film is formed as the resin cures). Properties Hardness and flexibility, also chemical and abrasion resistance.

Binders •  Alkyd – oil-based gloss

•  PVA – emulsions

•  Acrylic – water-based paints

•  Epoxy – specialist paints (eg two pack floor paints)

•  Polyurethane – varnishes

Solvents (thinners) Solvent is added for the flow of the paint (viscosity). This allows the paint to spread.

•  Solvent leaves the paint after drying.

•  Resin and solvent components together are called the vehicle.

•  Common solvents are pure turpentine for oil-based paints, and water for water-based paints.

Paint additives •  Anti-setting agents increase the shelf life by preventing pigments

from setting into the bottom of the can.

•  Driers are added to oil alkyd paints to speed up the drying process.

•  Anti-skinning agents are used to prevent skinning in the paint container.

•  Thixotropic agents give anti-sag properties to the paint – it has a jelly-like structure (eggshell and non-drip gloss).
