Content DevelopmentAn effective way to teach composing two-dimensional shapes is to let students explore and experiment. Give students the opportunity to use manipulatives such as pattern blocks and tangrams each day.

As students combine shapes, have them record their findings and look for relationships among shapes.

Content DevelopmentSome students may not understand that shapes may need to be turned over and around to make a new shape. Students may not yet understand that the position of the shape does not define the shape. Help students understand that a shape is the same despite its orientation.

Real World Connection: Have students consider careers that may need to compose shapes. For example, Architects must be able to put together shapes in order to create plans for buildings.

Day 1Essential Question: How can you combine two-dimensional shapes to make

new shapes?

Engage NY Lesson 4 Create composite shapes from two-dimensional shapes focus on Concept Development p. 5.B.5-5.B.7 questions guide class discussion on using pattern blocks to build new shapes, Student Debrief p. 5.B.7-5.B.8 is intended to invite reflection and active processing of the total lesson experience. It is important that each student has access to an ample supply of pattern blocks.

Independent practice p. 5.B.9 student page will be useful for applying student understanding.

Exit Ticket p. 5.B.11 should be utilized as it relates to Chapter Assessment at the end of the Unit of Study.

By the end of Day 1, students will be able to combine two-dimensional shapes to make new shapes.

Day 2Essential Question: How can you compose a two-dimensional shape?

Go Math Lesson 12.4, Combine More Shapes p. 497 With the Listen and Draw students should still be using manipulatives and eTeacher Resource: Two-dimensional Shapes, younger children do not have the spatial reasoning necessary to mentally visualize the combinations which they are making. On Your Own p. 498-499 #3- 6 should provide a good opportunity for discussion about orientation of shape and rotating them to make the new shape.

Problem Solving p. 500 #8- 11 students complete independently by drawing lines to dissect composite shapes.

By the end of Day 2, students will be able to compose two-dimensional shapes and justify their thinking.

Day 3Essential Question: How can using tools or models help you make new

shapes from combined shapes?

Use Go Math Lesson 12.5, Unlock the Problem p. 501 without students opening page—write the scenario on chart paper or whiteboard. Students should use quarter-circle to build a full circle from More Two Dimensional Shapes—what did you have to do to make a circle? I had to use four pieces and flip some of them. Direct students to trace the shape in their math journal.

Continue investigating using p. 502 (without having book open). Be sure to have a rigorous conversation about combining shapes. What do they notice about the new shapes, etc.

Ask students the Essential Question, p. 503 to summarize learning.

The performance task will be administered in the second half of this day.
