intellectual and research needs, wishes to encourage lifelong learners and foster creativity and design among its users.

We value:

• The promotion of information competence

• The use of technology to increase information access

• Close collaboration of staff and faculty

• Support of knowledgeable staff

• Collaborate with faculty, students, and other team members when drafting mission and vision statements

• Make vision and mission statements inspirational to promote success

• Vision statements are specific so goals can be measured and achieved

• Mission, values, and vision are intimately linked. Clearly found vision on values.

• Vision statements influences daily decision making

• Link vision statement to action strategic planning process

• Maintain 3–5 year timeline for goal achievement

• Competes with architecture libraries at large universities

• Serves as an attractive element of the school to draw new students

• Libraries at competing schools command greater funding for information resources

• Library’s small size allows for personalized services not available at other institutions

• Library not affected directly by state and local budget cuts affecting public institutions

• Decreased demand for architects due to current housing market may have long-term effects on student enrollment

• Economic crisis strains discretional spending for higher education

Page 7: Composed By: Jessie EdwardsZoe Luderitz Amanda HarterVeneza Pablico Diana LarkinEric Robinson Shelley Svensen

• Students and faculty at higher educational institutions expect Web resources and full-text databases

• Full-text access not supported by subject specific database for architecture, The Avery Index

• Network infrastructure at library weak; unable to support high demand for access

• Online access to Welsh Library currently unsupported

• Funding entirely dependent upon tuition revenue and enrollment

• No fixed budget allocation for library operations and development at present

• Newly added Landscape Architecture program will increase demands on library

• Flat structure of the NewSchool allows for rapid communication among library staff and to highest administrative levels

• Potential for resource sharing with other local institutions

• Specialized collection suitable to the curriculum of the NewSchool of Architecture and Design

• Additional collections of 20th Century Architects and Latin American titles

• Dedicated staff provide personalized service to students and faculty

• Knowledgeable staff are devoted to improving selves professionally through continuing education in both the field of architecture and library science

• Limited book collection and periodical subscriptions, particularly international journals and materials on landscape architecture

• Uncataloged materials and bibliographic records that do not conform to AACR2 rules

• Limited physical space

• Inadequate technological resources

• Deteriorating materials; lack of ability on staff’s part to repair damaged materials

Page 11: Composed By: Jessie EdwardsZoe Luderitz Amanda HarterVeneza Pablico Diana LarkinEric Robinson Shelley Svensen

• Web technologies provide possibilities for expanding library’s resources and outreach efforts

• Library’s affiliations with other institutions and professional organizations offer numerous opportunities for enhancing library services and developing materials and staff

• Small sizes of library and school offer excellent structure for rapid communication and coordination among staff and faculty; allows for more effective linking of library resources to instruction

• Campus possesses unused building space; potential for utilization by library as it goes through expansion

Page 12: Composed By: Jessie EdwardsZoe Luderitz Amanda HarterVeneza Pablico Diana LarkinEric Robinson Shelley Svensen

• Dependence on surrounding libraries to support broader curricular needs of students

• Insufficient funding from exterior sources; no secured budget material allocation

• Lack of formal committees and advisory boards; all planning and development left solely to head librarian

Develop collections and increase accessibility• Secure funding to implement open-source web-based

ILS and OPAC– Allocate $5,000 as initial outlay in 2010

– Decrease annual budget 5% for 5 years

• Broaden periodical coverage and provide full-text access– Assess coverage as a percentage of those

recommended as core journals

– Assess full-text as percentage of collection with full-text access

Page 14: Composed By: Jessie EdwardsZoe Luderitz Amanda HarterVeneza Pablico Diana LarkinEric Robinson Shelley Svensen

• Update substandard catalog records to AACR2 compliance– Implement policy to log staff hours spent on this task

• Continue to expand collection usefully– Implement ILS/e-metrics to track collection/periodical

usage statistics

– Invest in development of most utilized subjects

Increase communication and collaboration with faculty

• Keep informed of ongoing projects to ensure availability of resources

• Implement course-integrated library instruction

• Assess number of total faculty participating in programs

Page 16: Composed By: Jessie EdwardsZoe Luderitz Amanda HarterVeneza Pablico Diana LarkinEric Robinson Shelley Svensen

Increase information literacy skills among students

• Introduce requirement for library skills course into curriculum

• Ensure pedagogical competency by student surveys

Page 17: Composed By: Jessie EdwardsZoe Luderitz Amanda HarterVeneza Pablico Diana LarkinEric Robinson Shelley Svensen

• Provide development opportunities for staff– Increase staff participation in continuing education,

seminars, and conventions

– Partial-reimbursement for memberships and professional subscriptions

– Expand knowledge of database tools

• Achieve these goals by:– Allocate 3% of budget for staff education; minimum

of 4 hours of training per staff member per year

– Allocate $300 per employee for subscriptions and professional memberships

Page 18: Composed By: Jessie EdwardsZoe Luderitz Amanda HarterVeneza Pablico Diana LarkinEric Robinson Shelley Svensen

• Develop funding partnerships to increase budget:– Contact alumni and local AIA members to support library

– Solicit corporations for support and give recognition within the community

– Seek out grant opportunities

• Achieve these goals by:– Evaluate prior years donations and send alumni

donation forms at end of fiscal year to ensure set amount of donations

– Targeting new and upcoming firms looking for recognition within the community

– Implement research for grants from ALA, SLA, etc.

Page 19: Composed By: Jessie EdwardsZoe Luderitz Amanda HarterVeneza Pablico Diana LarkinEric Robinson Shelley Svensen

• Develop library study spaces according to student needs– Survey students in attempts to find out amount of

students who will be utilizing the extra study space and computer stations

– 75% of student body must support goal

– A portion of budget will be set aside along with donations from alumni in support of this goal

– Depending on need and size, construction of addition or new building might be needed

• Purchase privileges for students at UCSD Geisel Library to provide broader access– Increase in student fees to cover

cost of privileges and access

– Limit cost per student if purchased individually

– Budget increase in order to partially relieve the cost of students

– Track number of student memberships and activation by monitoring student logins through IP address
